Composite spectral spatial pixel CNN for land-use hyperspectral image classification with hybrid activation function

Deep learning methods have played a prominent role in the development of computer visualization in recent years. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a popular analytical technique based on spectroscopy and visible imaging which examines the pattern of light in a target and recognizes objects based on varying spectral properties. However, in remote sensing, detecting surface material via HSI analysis is a critical and difficult task. The performance of spectral-spatial data exploitation is well established to outperform typical spectral pixel-wise techniques. Because of its great feature extraction ability, convolutional neural networks (CNN) have emerged as a potent deep learning approach. CNN translates the input features of an image into an equivalent CNN feature map, in addition to naturally combining spectral and spatial information. However, spectral-spatial properties when combined with pixel-wise extraction can learn more minute details of objects present on the earth’s terrain. In this paper, a noble Composite Spectral Spatial Pixel CNN model for the classification of hyperspectral data is presented which is an amalgamation of 3D-2D-1D CNN. While the 3D and 2D CNN exploit the spectral-spatial features effectively, 1D CNN works on pixel-wise feature extraction. Further, to optimize the classification performance of the proposed model, a new hybrid activation function Flatten-T Swish is also used which is the combination of ReLU and Swish function. The proposed model is compared with other state-of-the-art models based on three popular HSI datasets, and it is found that the proposed model performs better among others in terms of classification and computation time, giving 98.87% accuracy for Indian Pines, 99.92% accuracy for Pavia University, and 99.99% accuracy for Salinas Valley dataset. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Advanced functional connectivity analysis with integrated EEG signal enhancement and GTW-EEG-GAN for emotion detection

Emotion recognition is crucial in human-computer interaction and psychological research, utilizing modalities such as facial expressions, voice intonations, and EEG signals. This research investigates AI-driven techniques by employing Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) on functional connectivity matrices derived from EEG data to advance emotion recognition. Our approach integrates sophisticated preprocessing methods, including Integrated EEG Signal Enhancement (IESE) and novel augmentation techniques such as Gaussian Time Warping Generative Adversarial Network (GTW-EEG-GAN). This integration aims at enhancing data quality and diversity. Signal decomposition using EMD-Wavelet Hybrid Decomposition further refines feature extraction, enabling robust analysis of EEG signals. Functional connectivity metrics capture critical neural interactions intended for precise emotion characterization. The GNN architecture effectively processes these features, achieving significant accuracy improvements. Evaluations on the DEAP dataset demonstrate promising results, attaining 94.5% accuracy before hyperparameter tuning and further improving to 98.6% after tuning, highlighting the system's efficacy. The methodology showcases the integration of advanced signal processing techniques with AI, offering a comprehensive framework for future studies. The findings advocate potential applications in areas such as personalized mental health monitoring, adaptive learning environments, and responsive gaming experiences, demonstrating the broad impact and versatility of AI-driven EEG-based emotion recognition. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Performance issue monitoring, identification and diagnosis of SaaS software:a survey

SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) is a service model provided by cloud computing. It has a high requirement for QoS (Quality of Software) due to its method of providing software service. However, manual identification and diagnosis for performance issues is typically expensive and laborious because of the complexity of the application software and the dynamic nature of the deployment environment. Recently, substantial research efforts have been devoted to automatically identifying and diagnosing performance issues of SaaS software. In this survey, we comprehensively review the different methods about automatically identifying and diagnosing performance issues of SaaS software. We divide them into three steps according to their function: performance log generation, performance issue identification and performance issue diagnosis. We then comprehensively review these methods by their development history. Meanwhile, we give our proposed solution for each step. Finally, the effectiveness of our proposed methods is shown by experiments.

The Internet of Things (IoT), which enables seamless connectivity and effective data exchange between physical items and digital systems, has completely changed the way we interact with our surroundings. This study evaluates IoT applications in healthcare, transportation, agriculture, and smart cities, highlighting advancements, opportunities, and challenges. Using a systematic literature review and case study analysis, it identifies essential IoT components, including sensors, communication protocols, data analytics, and security methods. Key findings demonstrate IoT's potential to enhance healthcare through real-time monitoring and cost reduction, optimize transportation systems for resource efficiency, improve agricultural productivity via precision farming, and enable sustainable urban development in smart cities. However, challenges like data privacy, interoperability, and scalability remain critical barriers to widespread adoption. This study underscores the need for interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to address these challenges and unlock IoT's full potential. It provides actionable insights and future directions for realizing a connected, efficient, and sustainable IoT-driven future. © The Author(s) 2025.

Machine learning (ML) with data analysis has many successful applications and is widely employed daily. Additionally, they have played a significant role in combating the global coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. International occurrences of the COVID-19 pandemic have resulted from the rapid global spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. In this study, we examine the ML and data analysis techniques for diagnosis, treatment, and impact of COVID-19, which are based on artificial intelligence (AI). Moreover, we provide an overview of the current state of the art in AI-based machine learning and deep learning techniques as well as the datasets, tools, and performance of the tools that can be used to combat COVID-19. In this survey, we have attempted to provide a comprehensive overview of the most recent state-of-the-art approaches available to researchers in Mathematical and Statistical analysis and the larger medical community as a whole. It also includes information on how data and ML can be used to improve COVID-19 status and encourage further research to prevent COVID-19 outbreaks. Analytical Formulation and Numerical Investigation of Electromechanical Dynamics in Circular Biconvex Diaphragm Capacitive Pressure Sensor

Capacitive pressure sensors (CPSs) have attracted considerable interest due to their high sensitivity, low energy consumption, and potential for miniaturization, making them suitable for applications in automotive systems, consumer electronics, and industrial automation. The conventional designs of CPSs often face challenges such as limited sensitivity, mechanical instability, and difficulties in achieving increased sensitivity. This study presents a biconvex diaphragm using silicon, featuring a gradual thickness variation, with a maximum thickness at the center. This article offers a mathematical analysis of the sensor, featuring step-by-step derivations for parameters such as the maximum thickness of the diaphragm, working range, capacitance, and capacitive sensitivity. Finally, curves of capacitance and capacitive sensitivity with pressure are obtained in MATLAB, and the results are compared with those of prior works. The proposed sensor shows a more than threefold increase in capacitance and a nearly double improvement in capacitive sensitivity compared to the highest previously reported double touch mode capacitive pressure sensor (DTMCPS). The deflection of the diaphragm is obtained using COMSOL. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

Automatic lung cancer detection using hybrid particle snake swarm optimization with optimized mask RCNN

As a result of its aggressive nature and late identification at advanced stages, lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths. Lung cancer early diagnosis is a serious and difficult challenge that is crucial to a person's survival. The first diagnosis of the malignant nodules is typically made using chest radiography (X-rays) and computed tomography (CT) scans;however, the potential presence of benign nodules results in incorrect conclusions. The early phases of both benign and malignant nodules exhibit striking similarities. In this paper, a novel deep learning-based model is proposed for the precise diagnosis of malignant nodules. The proposed approach consists of two stages namely, pre-processing and lung nodule detection. Initially, the Lung CT scan images are collected from the dataset. Then, to remove the noise present in the input image, we apply an adaptive median filter. Then, to enhance the image, Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) is applied. After pre-processing, the image is given to the optimized mask RCNN classifier to detect the malignant and benign nodules. To enhance the performance of the Mask RCNN classifier, the hyper-parameters are optimally selected using hybrid particle snake swarm optimization (PS2OA). The proposed PS2OA is a hybridization of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and snake swarm optimization (SSO). The performance of the proposed approach is analyzed based on different metrics and effectiveness compared with state-of-the-art works. The proposed approach attained the maximum accuracy of 97.67%. Transparent and trustworthy interpretation of COVID-19 features in chest X-rays using explainable AI

The potential of AI-based disease prediction models for assessing COVID-19 patients outperforms conventional methods. However, their black-box nature has limited their applicability. This study explores the approach for COVID-19 identification by integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods with Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), such as EfficientNet and DenseNet, applied for medical imaging. To address the black-box challenge, the study incorporates eXplainable AI (XAI) techniques, including LIME, Grad-CAM, and a novel variant of Grad-CAM++, termed "Modified Grad-CAM++ ". The modification aims to enhance explanations for COVID-19 predictions, improving the interpretability and transparency of the model’s decision-making process. Collaborating with expert radiologists, the study validates the Modified Grad-CAM++ using a separate dataset of radiologist-validated chest X-ray (CXR) images. The Integrated Uncertainty Calculation (IUC) metric is introduced as an evaluation measure for the Modified Grad-CAM++. Remarkably, both EfficientNet and DenseNet achieve high diagnostic precision, with accuracy rates of 98% and 97%, respectively. The integration of XAI algorithms enhances the interpretability and transparency of predictions, ensuring clinical relevance and validity. These precise AI models offer valuable support to healthcare professionals in decision-making and resource allocation. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Multi-Dimensional Training Optimization for Efficient Federated Synergy Learning

Edge learning (EL) is an end-to-edge collaborative learning paradigm enabling devices to participate in model training and data analysis, opening countless opportunities for edge intelligence. As a promising EL framework, federated synergy learning (FSyL) mitigates the computation and communication overhead on resource-constrained devices by offloading partial model layers to the edge server for synergistic training. Nevertheless, due to the system and statistical heterogeneity, naively using existing FSyL methods is significantly time-consuming and causes accuracy degradation. Motivated by this issue, this paper introduces a novel FSyL framework that integrates multi-dimensional training optimization and formulates the edge learning cost minimization (ELCM) problem. To tackle the ELCM efficiently, we design OL-MG, an OnLine Model Splitting and Resource Provisioning Game. Specifically, we first reformulate and decompose the original ELCM based on data quality evaluation. Then, given a model splitting decision, we determine the optimal resource provisioning in Sub-problem1, based on which optimal model splitting in Sub-problem2 is modeled as a potential game. Subsequently, we introduce a decentralized algorithm to find a Nash equilibrium (NE) solution. Furthermore, we further extend OL-MG to support a budget-aware multi-edge scenario. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed mechanism significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods in cost-saving and accuracy improvement. © 2025 IEEE.

Research on facial expression recognition based on multimodal data fusion and neural network

Facial expression recognition is a challenging task when neural network is applied to pattern recognition. Most of the current recognition research is based on single source facial data, which generally has the disadvantages of low accuracy and low robustness. In this paper, a neural network algorithm of facial expression recognition based on multimodal data fusion is proposed. The algorithm is based on the multimodal data, and it takes the facial image, the histogram of oriented gradient of the image and the facial landmarks as the input, and establishes Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) designed to extract features from facial image, neural network designed to extract features from facial Landmarks and Neural Network (LNN) designed to extract features from Histogram of gradient (HNN), three sub-neural networks to extract data features, using multimodal data feature fusion mechanism to improve the accuracy of facial expression recognition. Experimental results show that, the algorithm has a great improvement in accuracy, robustness and detection speed. Copyright © 2024 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
