INTRODUCTION: A robust method is proposed in this paper to detect helmet usage in two-wheeler riders to enhance road safety. OBJECTIVES: This involves a custom made dataset that contains 1000 images captured under diverse real-world scenarios, including variations in helmet size, colour, and lighting conditions. This dataset has two classes namely with helmet and without helmet. METHODS: The proposed helmet classification approach utilizes the Multi-Scale Deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) framework cascaded with Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network. Initially the Multi-Scale Deep CNN extracts modes by applying Single-level Discrete 2D Wavelet Transform (dwt2) to decompose the original images. In particular, four different modes are used for segmenting a single image namely approximation, horizontal detail, vertical detail and diagonal detail. After feeding the segmented images into a Multi-Scale Deep CNN model, it is cascaded with an LSTM network. RESULTS: The proposed model achieved accuracies of 99.20% and 95.99% using both 5-Fold Cross-Validation (CV) and Hold-out CV methods, respectively. CONCLUSION: This result was better than the CNN-LSTM, dwt2-LSTM and a tailor made CNN model. © 2025 A. Annadurai et al.

Construction and demolition (C&D) waste management is challenging in urban areas due to the high volume of waste generated and widespread illegal dumping. City authorities are struggling with environmental, economic, and social issues due to the lack of a systematic waste management process. An inefficient collection system leads to the loss of valuable urban spaces and clogging of drains with debris. This study aims to develop a simplified algorithm for effective C&D waste collection and transportation systems that maximize efficiency and minimize cost. It analyses various scheduling concepts such as Dijkstra's, Bellman-Ford's, and Floyd-Warshall's algorithm to identify the most efficient route for the collection fleet. The uniqueness of the study lies in providing an integrated solution to the collection and transportation issues of C&D waste management by estimating the volume of debris from photographs and scheduling the collection fleet based on real-world constraints. Waste type, volume, transportation fleet, route and vehicle capacities are considered to aid in efficient resource allocation and utilization. Optimization process involves determining the optimal allocation of waste to the collection fleet, scheduling transportation routes, and assigning human resources. On verification with a real-world case, the model was found to reduce the number of trips and enhance resource utilization, resulting in an efficiency improvement of over 30%. Since waste collection constitutes a significant cost in any solid waste management process, proposed methodology would be beneficial for waste recycling facilities and local waste management authorities to optimize the process, minimize costs, maximize efficiency and reduce environmental footprint. © 2024 Widener University school of Civil engineering. Coronavirus belongs to the family of Coronaviridae. It is responsible for COVID-19 communicable disease, which has affected 213 countries and territories worldwide. Researchers in computational fields have been active in proposing techniques to filter the information and recommendations about this disease and provide surveillance in controlling this outbreak. Researchers used Chest X-ray images, abdominal Computed Tomography scans, and Tweet datasets for building machine learning and deep learning-based models for COVID-19 predictions and forecasting purposes. Accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision, and F1-measure are the five primary evaluation criteria researchers employ to evaluate the quality of their study. This article summarises research works on COVID-19 based on machine learning and deep learning models. The Internet of Things (IoT), which enables seamless connectivity and effective data exchange between physical items and digital systems, has completely changed the way we interact with our surroundings. This study evaluates IoT applications in healthcare, transportation, agriculture, and smart cities, highlighting advancements, opportunities, and challenges. Using a systematic literature review and case study analysis, it identifies essential IoT components, including sensors, communication protocols, data analytics, and security methods. Key findings demonstrate IoT's potential to enhance healthcare through real-time monitoring and cost reduction, optimize transportation systems for resource efficiency, improve agricultural productivity via precision farming, and enable sustainable urban development in smart cities. However, challenges like data privacy, interoperability, and scalability remain critical barriers to widespread adoption. This study underscores the need for interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to address these challenges and unlock IoT's full potential. It provides actionable insights and future directions for realizing a connected, efficient, and sustainable IoT-driven future. © The Author(s) 2025.

Ancient Character Recognition: A Comprehensive Review

Deep learning-based character recognition of Tamil inscriptions plays a significant role in preserving the ancient Tamil language. The complexity of the task lies in the precise classification of the age-old Tamil letters (Vattezhuthu) into modern-day Tamil letter structures. Various methodologies and pre-processing techniques have been used for denoising the ancient Tamil manuscript to retrieve the Tamil text. Researchers have used various synthesized and scanned images of stone wall inscriptions, palm leaves manuscripts, and offline handwritten characters for their analysis. Over the years, Ancient Tamil scripts have deteriorated with time due to various natural calamities. Strong denoising and feature extraction methods are required to separate the letters accurately to tackle this issue. Techniques such as CNN(OCR), ResNet, SVM, KNN, HorVer method, etc., are utilized to digitize Tamil characters. This technique has successfully converted handwritten characters into digitalized text for multiple languages, including Tamil, Arabic, English, Latin, Chinese, German, etc. Different models have been evaluated based on their segmentation and recognition rates, accuracy, detection rate, precision, and confusion matrix. This paper will concentrate on Ancient Tamil character segmentation and recognition models. Besides, we will give an overview of the different models and datasets available. Lastly, we summarise the key challenges and the future scope related to the topic. © 2013 IEEE.

Efficient breast cancer detection using neural networks and explainable artificial intelligence

The growing dependence on deep learning models for medical diagnosis underscores the critical need for robust interpretability and transparency to instill trust and ensure responsible usage. This study investigates the efficacy of various explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) techniques in comprehending deep learning models utilized for breast cancer classification from down sampled histopathology images. A comparative assessment of multiple convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures, encompassing standard CNNs, ResNet, VGG-16, and VGG-19, on down sampled images was conducted. The primary goal is to pinpoint the model exhibiting the highest accuracy and subsequently employ three prominent XAI methods—LIME, SHAP, and Saliency Maps—to get insights into the top-performing model. This study identifies VGG-19 as the best-performing model with an accuracy of 92.59% and demonstrates that among various XAI techniques, LIME provides the most accurate and clinically relevant explanations for breast cancer classification from down sampled histopathology images. These findings, validated by medical professionals, enhance the interpretability and reliability of deep learning models in clinical settings, promoting their responsible integration into healthcare practices. This validation was further corroborated through consultation with medical professionals, including doctors specializing in breast cancer diagnosis. This research endeavors to deepen the understanding of the model’s rationale and instill confidence in its outputs. The outcomes of this study hold significant promise in elevating the interpretability and reliability of deep learning models tailored for breast cancer diagnosis, thus facilitating their responsible integration into clinical settings. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Occurrence of crimes has been on the constant rise despite the emerging discoveries and advancements in the technological field in the past *** of the most tedious tasks is to track a suspect once a crime is *** most of the crimes are committed by individuals who have a history of felonies,it is essential for a monitoring system that does not just detect the person’s face who has committed the crime,but also their ***,a smart criminal detection and identification system that makes use of the OpenCV Deep Neural Network(DNN)model which employs a Single Shot Multibox Detector for detection of face and an auto-encoder model in which the encoder part is used for matching the captured facial images with the criminals has been *** detection and extraction of the face in the image by face cropping,the captured face is then compared with the images in the *** comparison is performed by calculating the similarity value between each pair of images that are obtained by using the Cosine Similarity *** plotting the values in a graph to find the threshold value,we conclude that the confidence rate of the encoder model is 0.75 and above.

Cryptography with optimal deep learning-based authentication scheme for preserving anonymity in telecare medical information system

The Telecare Medicine information System (TMIS) revolutionizes healthcare delivery by integrating medical equipment and sensors, facilitating proactive and cost-effective services. Accessible online, TMIS empowers patients and practitioners to manage medical data efficiently, ensuring timely care provision and streamlined record maintenance. Recognizing security challenges inherent in this interconnected healthcare landscape, researchers have devised a two-factor authentication solution, increasingly leveraging password-based authentication via smart cards. This article presents the development of a tailored remote authentication system, the Deep Learning-Based Online Threat Detection with Key Agreement (DLOTDKA-MAP), designed specifically for TMIS. Comprising two critical phases, the DLOTDKA-MAP framework employs an Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (AOA) and Deep Belief Network (DBN) model in real-time online threat detection, ensuring swift identification and mitigation of potential security threats. The subsequent phase employs Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) with Schnorr's signature to establish secure data transmission among collaborating entities, preemptively addressing security breaches and ensuring mutual authentication. A comprehensive experimental study validates the presented DLOTDKA-MAP technique, showcasing its superiority over existing approaches and underscoring its role in advancing TMIS security infrastructure. Achieving remarkable performance values, includes an accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score of 98.57%, this research significantly contributes to safeguarding the confidentiality and integrity of medical data within TMIS, particularly in a federated cloud environment. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

The IoT -based smart shopping cart system revolutionizes the retail experience by integrating RFID technology, image processing cameras, and weight sensors along with bill generation and payment checkout. RFID scanners on all four sides and image processing ensures product accuracy. A weight sensor verifies added products' weight, aligning with the bill generated on the customer's screen. The system displays real-time information, including product details, prices, discounts, and total bill. A robust database management system ensures data integrity and security. This innovative system transforms conventional shopping into a futuristic and efficient experience. Human intervention in shopping can be minimized. © 2024 IEEE.

Design of a ML-based trust prediction model using intelligent TrustBoxes in challenged networks

Challenged networks (CNs) contain resource-constrained nodes deployed in regions where human intervention is difficult. Opportunistic networks (OppNets) are CNs with no predefined source-to-destination paths. Due to their inherent properties, CNs and OppNets are highly susceptible to black-hole (BH) attacks, resulting in degraded packet-delivery ratio. In this work, an ML-based trust prediction model (MLTPM) is proposed to identify potential BH nodes in OppNets. MLTPM uses a novel function to calculate the total-trust-value (TTV) of each node. Intelligent TrustBoxes are introduced in the network to identify possible BH nodes, using TTV, along with five more node-behaviour features. TrustBoxes reduce the computational overhead of the resource-constrained nodes. Three simulated scenarios are compared - no detection, non-ML-based detection, and MLTPM, each using epidemic, prophet, and spray-and-wait routing protocols. MLTPM performs best with spray-and-wait, exhibiting about 25.21% and 80% mean improvement in delivery-ratio and dropped-message numbers respectively, compared to non-ML-based detection. An overall 12.62% improvement in delivery-ratio and 26.7% improvement in dropped messages is observed using MLTPM, compared to the above-mentioned scenarios. © 2024 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
