Visualization of position-time series data from molecular dynamics simulations of a material has to render atomic trajectories, and relevant structural and dynamical information. Clutter/occlusion associated with overlapping trajectories becomes serious even for moderate data sizes. We present an adaptive hierarchical scheme for merging multiple positions along trajectories to significantly reduce the number of points/line segments used for rendering. Our approach finds positions lying within a space window (cut-off distance) from a reference position and merges them into a single position. The window is then moved in time order with merging performed at each successive location. All original positions are thus processed to a reduced number of new (merged) positions, which are further merged with the same or a different cut-off to obtain even fewer positions. This hierarchical merging may continue several levels deep. Moreover, merging can be performed subject to constraint of information, which is displayed (color-coded) along individual trajectories. Both the trajectory geometry and underlying atomic structure become increasingly visible after merging so the nature and extent of atomic arrangements and movements can be better assessed.

In a variety of documents, ranging from forms to archive documents and books with annotations, machine printed and handwritten text may coexist in the same document image, raising significant issues within the recognition pipeline. It is, therefore, necessary to separate the two types of text so that it becomes feasible to apply different recognition methodologies to each modality. In this paper, a new approach is proposed which strives towards identifying and separating handwritten from machine printed text using the Bag of Visual Words model (BoVW). Initially, blocks of interest are detected in the document image. For each block, a descriptor is calculated based on the BoVW. The final characterization of the blocks as Handwritten, Machine Printed or Noise is made by a decision scheme which relies upon the combination of binary SVM classifiers. The promising performance of the proposed approach is shown by using a consistent evaluation methodology which couples meaningful measures along with new datasets dedicated to the problem upon consideration. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Two-particle pseudorapidity correlations are measured in sNN=2.76TeVPb+Pb, sNN=5.02TeVp+Pb, and s=13TeVpp collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), with total integrated luminosities of approximately 7μb−1, 28 nb−1, and 65 nb−1, respectively. The correlation function CN(η1,η2) is measured as a function of event multiplicity using charged particles in the pseudorapidity range |η|<2.4. The correlation function contains a significant short-range component, which is estimated and subtracted. After removal of the short-range component, the shape of the correlation function is described approximately by 1+〈a12〉1/2η1η2 in all collision systems over the full multiplicity range. The values of 〈a12〉1/2 are consistent for the opposite-charge pairs and same-charge pairs, and for the three collision systems at similar multiplicity. The values of 〈a12〉1/2 and the magnitude of the short-range component both follow a power-law dependence on the event multiplicity. The short-range component in p + Pb collisions, after symmetrizing the proton and lead directions, is found to be smaller at a given η than in pp collisions with comparable multiplicity.

The planning of goal-directed movement towards targets in different parts of space is an important function of the brain. Such visuo-motor planning and execution is known to involve multiple brain regions, including visual, parietal, and frontal cortices. To understand how these brain regions work together to both plan and execute goal-directed movement, it is essential to describe the dynamic causal interactions among them. Here we model causal interactions of distributed cortical source activity derived from non-invasively recorded EEG, using a combination of ICA, minimum-norm distributed source localization (cLORETA), and dynamical modeling within the Source Information Flow Toolbox (SIFT). We differentiate network causal connectivity of reach planning and execution, by comparing the causal network in a speeded reaching task with that for a control task not requiring goal-directed movement. Analysis of a pilot dataset (n=5) shows the utility of this technique and reveals increased connectivity between visual, motor and frontal brain regions during reach planning, together with decreased cross-hemisphere visual coupling during planning and execution, possibly related to task demands.

Active shape model (ASM) is an image searching method based on statistical model, which is widely used to extract features. The classical ASM model includes the shape model and the local profile model. The main merit of ASM model is using statistics to contribute model of specific target image, by introducing prior knowledge on awaiting extraction target object, limiting the searching result in the variable range. These characteristics make it suitable for any similar object's feature. Experimental results show that the algorithm can extract facial features rapidly and have higher accuracy. © 2013 Academy Publisher.

This paper proposes a mixed-grained reconfigurable architecture consisting of fine-grained and coarse-grained fabrics, each of which can be configured for different levels of reliability depending on the reliability requirement of target applications, e.g. mission-critical applications to consumer products. Thanks to the fine-grained fabrics, the architecture can accommodate a state machine, which is indispensable for exploiting C-based behavioral synthesis to trade latency with resource usage through multi-step processing using dynamic reconfiguration. In implementing the architecture, the strategy of dynamic reconfiguration, the assignment of configuration storage and the number of implementable states are key factors that determine the achievable trade-off between used silicon area and latency. We thus split the configuration bits into two classes;state-wise configuration bits and state-invariant configuration bits for minimizing area overhead of configuration bit storage. Through a case study, we experimentally explore the appropriate number of implementable states. A proof-of-concept VLSI chip was fabricated in 65 nm process. Measurement results show that applications on the chip can be working in a harsh radiation environment. Irradiation tests also show the correlation between the number of sensitive bits and the mean time to failure. Furthermore, the temporal error rate of an example application due to soft errors in the datapath was measured and demonstrated for reliability-aware mapping. The LDA topic model is being used to model corpora of documents that can be represented by bags of words. Here we extend the LDA model to deal with documents that are represented by bags of continuous descriptors. Given a finite dictionary of words, our extended LDA model allows for the soft assignment of descriptors to (many) dictionary words. We derive variational inference and parameter estimation procedures for the extended model, which closely resemble those obtained for the original model, with two important differences: First, the histogram of word counts is replaced by a histogram of pseudo word counts, or sums of responsibilities over all descriptors. Second, parameter estimation now depends on the average covariance matrix between these pseudocounts, reflecting the fact that with soft assignment words are not independent. We use this approach to address the detection of novel video events, where we seek to identify video events with low posterior probability. Using a benchmark dataset for novelty detection, we show a very significant improvement in the detection of novel events when using our extended LDA model with soft assignment to words as against hard assignment (the original model), achieving state of the art novelty detection results.
