Student Portraits and Their Applications in Personalized Learning: Theoretical Foundations and Practical Exploration

As a data-driven analysis and decision-making tool, student portraits have gained significant attention in education management and personalized instruction. This research systematically explores the construction process of student portraits by integrating knowledge graph technology with advanced data analytics, including clustering, predictive modelling, and natural language processing. It then examines the portraits’ applications in personalized learning, such as student-centric adaptation of content and paths, and personalized teaching, especially the educator-driven instructional adjustments. Through case studies and quantitative analysis of multimodal datasets, including structured academic records, unstructured behavioural logs, and socio-emotional assessments, the research demonstrates how student portraits enable academic early warnings, adaptive learning path design, and equitable resource allocation. The findings provide actionable insights and technical frameworks for implementing precision education.

In this study, we reported an optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) method based on optical attenuation coefficients (OAC), called OAC-based decorrelation (OACD), for mapping high-quality microvascular images. OACD utilizes the OAC instead of amplitude or phase to calculate flow signals, so OACD can intrinsically suppress noise arising from phase errors and intensity variations in OCT signals caused by the blood flow in superficial vasculature. The performance of the newly proposed algorithm is tested against previously reported OCTA algorithms (i.e., split-spectrum amplitude and phase-gradient angiography (SSAPGA) and principal component analysis (PCA)). Compared to SSAGPA and PCA, OACD can provide enhanced motion contrast in phantoms and in vivo experiments, facilitating better differentiation between vessels and static tissue. Benefiting from these advantages, the vascular images processed by the OACD method exhibit increased vascular visibility and connectivity, enhancing overall image quality. Our method holds promise for disease diagnosis and monitoring. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Stability Analysis of Connected Vehicle Platoons with Markovian Packet Losses

This article focuses on discussing the effects of inter-vehicular communication on the performance of platoon control. Different from the existing results established under a critical assumption that the fading channels are independent, this paper models the inter-vehicular communication as Markovian packet loss channel which can capture the temporal interdependencies of packet losses. Our aim is to decide whether there exists a distributed controller such that the underlying vehicle platoon can achieve mean square stability (MSS) over Markovian packet loss channels. First, for the scenario with identical Markovian packet losses, we begin by deriving a necessary and sufficient condition for the platoon MSS, which is established by utilizing the stability principles of Markov jump linear systems. Additionally, we propose a numerically verifiable criterion for MSS, which can be validated through the feasibility of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Furthermore, based on the modified Riccati inequality (MRI), we provide an analytical sufficient condition that ensures MSS for vehicle platoons. This condition is expressed in terms of the information flow topology (IFT) and the statistical parameters of Markov channels. Second, for the case with nonidentical packet dropouts, we introduce a Markovian loss channel based switching (MLCBS) model. Building upon this model, we further propose a sufficient conditon related to IFT and the transition probability matrix, and a distributed controller that is not only easy to implement but also enables the achievement of MSS for vehicle platoons with nonidentical packet dropouts. Ultimately, numerical experiments are performed to validate the obtained outcomes. © 2014 IEEE.

Convergence of energy-based learning in linear resistive networks

Energy-based learning algorithms are alternatives to backpropagation and are well-suited to distributed implementations in analog electronic devices. However, a rigorous theory of convergence is lacking. We make a first step in this direction by analysing a particular energy-based learning algorithm, Contrastive Learning, applied to a network of linear adjustable resistors. Two-Stage Incentive Mechanism Based on a Cooperative Mode: A Stackelberg Game Approach

With the explosive growth of mobile data, Mobile Crowd Sensing (MCS) has become a popular paradigm for large-scale data collection. The difficulty of data collection and the gaps in workers’ sensing capabilities are key factors to consider in worker recruitment and task assignment. To address these issues, we designed a two-stage cooperative incentive mechanism. In the first stage, a shelving level is introduced to assess task difficulty. Tasks are divided into high-quality and low-quality groups based on quality scores, while workers are categorized into high-ability and low-ability groups based on their historical performance. The Improved Chaotic Particle Swarm Optimization (ICPSO) algorithm is then applied to generate optimal task combinations. In the second stage, we address benefit distribution among cooperating workers by introducing time-dependent rewards and employing Stackelberg game theory to analyze the optimal completion time for both high-ability and low-ability workers. This analysis determines the optimal reward distribution and ability value allocation, with proof of the existence and uniqueness of a Nash equilibrium. Comparative experiments conducted on real-world datasets demonstrate that our cooperative task mechanism outperforms existing task bundling methods, validating its rationality and effectiveness. © 2014 IEEE.

Evolving temporal convolutional neural networks for modeling turntable servo systems

Turntable servo systems are important experimental equipment used for semi-physical simulation and testing of aircraft, which have very strict requirements for tracking performance. To achieve high-precision servo performance, some advanced model-based control methods have been used recently, but the control performance is greatly influenced by the accuracy of the model. Therefore, this paper proposes evolving temporal convolutional networks (TCNs) for accurately modeling turntable servo systems. Considering the advantages of TCNs in capturing local dependencies in sequence data and parallel computing, a TCN is adopted to compensate the unmodeled dynamics to significantly improve the accuracy of the existing dynamics model. Then, an evolutionary algorithm (EA) based architecture optimization algorithm for the above TCN model is proposed, and the network performance is continuously improved by simulating the population evolution in nature. Finally, the weight inheritance method is utilized to evaluate the performance of individuals during the evolution process to effectively improve the execution efficiency of the whole algorithm. In addition, the subnets inherited from the supernet meet the real-time requirements of the actual tasks by setting real-time constraints on the supernet. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed model against the peer competitors in terms of the prediction performance. In addition, the proposed optimization algorithm also shows higher execution efficiency as verified by ablation experiments. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Excess Mean Squared Error of Empirical Bayes Estimators

Empirical Bayes estimators are based on minimizing the average risk with the hyper-parameters in the weighting function being estimated from observed data. The performance of an empirical Bayes estimator is typically evaluated by its mean squared error (MSE). However, the explicit expression for its MSE is generally unavailable for finite sample sizes. To address this issue, we define a high-order analytical criterion: the excess MSE. It quantifies the performance difference between the maximum likelihood and empirical Bayes estimators. An explicit expression for the excess MSE of an empirical Bayes estimator employing a general data-dependent hyper-parameter estimator is derived. As specific instances, we provide excess MSE expressions for kernel-based regularized estimators using the scaled empirical Bayes, Stein’s unbiased risk estimation, and generalized cross-validation hyper-parameter estimators. Moreover, we propose a modification to the excess MSE expressions for regularized estimators for moderate sample sizes and show its improvement on accuracy in numerical simulations. With the rapid advancement of data acquisition technologies, multiview data have been widely applied in fields such as social networks, computer vision, and natural language processing. Multiview data typically contain information arising from different views or sensors, offering more perspectives for observation. The multiview nature also brings challenges, such as high dimensionality, noise, heterogeneity, and redundancy. Particularly, in scenarios with limited labeled data, traditional single-view learning methods often struggle to handle these complex issues. To address this, this article proposes an unsupervised multiview learning framework that integrates Takagi–Sugeno–Kang fuzzy systems and graph-based adaptive regularization (MvTSK-GAR) to handle the heterogeneity and redundancy in multiview data effectively. Specifically, this article first captures the uncertainty in multiview data through fuzzy rules and models the structural relationships between the data using graph-based adaptive regularization. The framework does not rely on a large amount of labeled data. Instead, it integrates complementary information coming from different views to automatically mine latent patterns, thus generating more accurate and stable data representations. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework performs well in various real-world applications, particularly excelling in high-dimensional data processing and noise reduction. In emerging consumer healthcare, high-performance and robust medical image segmentation methods are essential for personalized diagnosis and treatment. Thus, early screening of aneurysms reduces the risk of aneurysm rupture and provides therapeutic and preventive measures. However, uncontrollable factors such as uncertainty in the size and location shape of tumors in medical images a significant challenge to medical image segmentation. These factors make extracting high-quality features from aneurysm images difficult, resulting in poor segmentation. Then, we designed a dual encoder cross-shape transform network (DECSTNet) to capture aneurysm feature information. The dual encoder structure can extract aneurysm feature information at different scales, the adaptive dynamic feature fusion module can fuse features at different scales between the encoders, and the cross-shape window transform layer can compute the width and height of the image in parallel for local self-attention, which enhances the interactive capability of the telematic information while realizing the complementarity of the local information. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate the excellent segmentation performance of DECSTNet on the private and three public datasets. Noteworthy our method has significant segmentation performance and fewer parameters, making it well-suited to be deployed on IoMT diagnostic platforms for medical image segmentation to promote healthy patient consumption. © 2025 IEEE.

The enhanced truncated region eigenfunction expansion (enhanced TREE) method is employed to derive an analytical model of a finite-length metal tube tested by a C-core coil in an arbitrary axial position. The vector potential and the coil impedance variation are calculated. To develop an efficient algorithm, the 1-D finite element method (1-D FEM), vector normalization, and Clenshaw-Curtis quadrature are integrated. To improve the computation performance of the complex eigenvalues with large imaginary parts, a coordinate transformation technique is implemented within the Arnoldi iteration. The efficacy of the proposed approach is validated by comparing the theoretical predictions with experimental results. © 1965-2012 IEEE.
