Energy-Free Sensing and Context Recognition Using Photovoltaic Cells

The field of energy-free sensing and context recognition has recently gained significant attention as it allows operating systems without external power sources. Photovoltaic cells can convert light energy into electrical energy to power sensing devices, but their power may not be sufficient to ensure energy-free sensing due to the varying power needs of sensors and high computational demands. In this article, we propose the use of photovoltaic cells as a standalone sensor for the recognition of different contexts, including user identification, step counting, and location tracking. The system utilizes the photocurrent readings generated by the photovoltaic cells to capture the unique mobility patterns of different users. By analyzing these patterns, the system can accurately identify the user, count the number of steps taken, and track the user’s location. We propose a computationally efficient dynamic time warping (DTW) to match the variable length sequences of photocurrent readings to a database of known patterns and identify the closest subject and location matches. The system was rigorously evaluated in a realistic environment, and the results indicate that it can accurately estimate step count, identify subjects, and localize them with an accuracy of 88%, 90%, and 43 cm, respectively. This is achieved while the proposed system is nonintrusive and can operate without external power sources, making it a promising technology for energy-free sensing and context recognition. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

Comprehensive multimodal approach for Parkinson’s disease classification using artificial intelligence: insights and model explainability

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disorder affecting millions worldwide. Early detection is vital for effective management, yet remains challenging. In this study, we investigated four distinct datasets for PD detection. Through comprehensive experimentation employing ensemble methods and feature selection, we achieved high classification accuracies across the datasets. For the Oxford Parkinson’s Disease Detection Dataset, an accuracy of 95.67%, precision of 97.59%, recall of 84.5%, specificity of 99.32%, and F1-score of 90.57% were achieved. For the Alzheimer Parkinson Diseases 3 Class Dataset, the "Stacking" approach surpasses individual models, reaching an accuracy of 99.85%, precision of 99.81%, recall of 99.81%, specificity of 99.86%, and F1 of 99.81%. For the NewHandPD dataset, Regarding the Spiral category, The "Base-P32-384" model surpasses others with an accuracy of 97.35%, precision of 96.50%, recall of 98.57%, and F1-score of 97.53%. The collective "Stacking" approach proves highly effective regarding the Circle category, achieving 100% across all performance metrics. Regarding the Meander category, the "Base-P16-224" model achieves an accuracy of 97.35%, precision of 99.26%, recall of 95.71%, specificity of 99.19%, and F1 of 97.45%. The Mobile Device Voice Recordings at King’s College London (MDVR-KCL) dataset contains two datasets. Regarding the "SpontaneousDialogue" dataset, accuracy, BAC, precision, recall, specificity, and F1-score were computed, resulting in values of 94.03%, 92.83%, 90.78%, 100.0%, and 85.67%, respectively. Regarding the "ReadText" dataset, accuracy, BAC, precision, recall, specificity, and F1-score were computed, resulting in values of 91.89%, 90.62%, 87.5%, 100.0%, and 81.25%, respectively. In this note, we present the synthesis of secure-by-construction controllers that address safety and security properties simultaneously in cyber-physical systems. Our focus is on studying a specific security property called opacity, which characterizes the system's ability to maintain plausible deniability of its secret behavior in the presence of an intruder. These controllers are synthesized based on a concept of so-called (augmented) control barrier functions. We propose conditions that facilitate the construction of the desired (augmented) control barrier functions and their corresponding secure-by-construction controllers. To compute these functions, we propose an iterative scheme that leverages iterative sum-of-square programming techniques. This approach enables efficient computation of these functions, particularly for polynomial systems. Finally, we validate the effectiveness of our results through a case study of a vehicle. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

This paper investigates the group formation control problem for cyber-physical systems (CPSs) with random communication constraints. The distributed cloud computing system is constructed to divide agents into groups and establish communication between agents. A data-driven predictive control strategy is proposed by combining networked predictive control and model-free adaptive control method. The desired group formation control performance can be achieved and the three-channel random communication constraints of CPSs are actively compensated. Thisstrategy does not require the system model and relies solely on the system's I/O data for adaptive learning. Further analyses concludes the conditions for simultaneous reach stability and group formation of the closed-loop CPSs using the data-driven predictive control strategy. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is validated by simulation results. © 2023 IEEE.

Clustered Federated Learning (CFL) is an innovative architecture that effectively tackles the challenge of data heterogeneity in Federated Learning (FL). However, such a setup also introduces vulnerabilities that can be exploited by attackers to execute more severe attacks. This paper compares the efficacy of data reconstruction attacks utilizing Generative Adversarial Nets (GANs) in FL and CFL, respectively. It also proposes a general client-level data reconstruction attack scheme whose key is in that the attackers can eavesdrop the victim’s partial uploaded parameters. Experimental results demonstrate that the sample data generated in this kind of attack within the scenario of CFL exhibit a higher degree of similarity with the targeted data compared to FL. And it is observed that the attacks involving eavesdropping in CFL perform more effectively with a client-level attack accuracy. In addition, we design a lightweight and adaptive local differential privacy (LDP) mechanism to defend against this kind of attack. In this method, under the premise that the differential privacy budget decreases as the number of training round adds, each client dynamically adjusts the probability of adding differential privacy noise and the size of DP’s parameters according to the training accuracy and the resemblance to the reconstructed data generated by attackers. Our defense method can effectively alleviate the loss of training accuracy for each client caused by the accumulation of the differential privacy budget while ensuring the defense effect, and it also reduces clients’ computational burden. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Clustered Federated Learning (CFL), as a type of Federated Learning (FL) paradigm, divides the clients into multiple clusters through the clustering process and trains them within the clusters, thus improving the overall model training accuracy. But the clustering process is also the weak link, which can lead to the failure of the whole model training if it is interfered or destroyed by the attacker. In this paper, we study the attack methods and defense strategies for attackers to implement data poisoning by tampering with client data, resulting in overall clustering failure. Our defense approach is designed to identify anomalous clients and recover their poisoned data. In order to resist the malicious behavior of attackers, we propose a dual-threshold pixel difference and watermark authentication defense method for detecting the presence of anomalous clients. The method can accurately identify the abnormal fluctuations in the data and effectively screen out the abnormal clients. Meanwhile, we propose a self-embedding watermarking defense algorithm based on shuffling idea for recovering poisoned data. Among them, our self-embedding watermarking algorithm not only accurately locates and recovers the tampered region of the image, but also improves the watermark security to prevent attackers from cracking it easily. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm can accurately identify the abnormal client and recover the data. Even if the client’s data is massively tampered with, we can recover the tampered data images with high quality and ensure that the CFL clustering is not corrupted. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

In this paper, an improved Gannet optimization algorithm (DDPSA-GOA) is presented. The Gannet optimization algorithm (GOA) was formed by mathematically studying the various foraging behaviors of Gannet. GOA has had better results in the past. A framework DDPSA to improve GOA is cited in this paper. DDPSA aims to adjust population size and replace stagnant individuals with different strategies by determining the stage of the population. The framework divides the population into two stages, premature integration and evolutionary stagnation, which are two population states with stagnant individual replacement mechanisms. Optimal elimination replacement or elite replacement is adopted for different stages. The GOA algorithm in the DDPSA framework was tested against the initial GOA and other comparative algorithms in the CEC 2013 test set. Facial reactions convey crucial emotional information and coordinating interpersonal relationships in human dyadic interactions. While existing Multiple Appropriate Facial Reaction Generation (MAFRG) methods focus on generating multiple reasonable facial reactions, none of these approaches combines 2D and 3D facial behaviour information nor account for the influence of individuals' facial identities, leading to inconsistencies in the generated facial reactions and limited capability in capturing subtle variations in facial depth and expression dynamics. This paper proposes a novel Hierarchical Multimodal Decoupling-Fusion (HMDF) framework that decouples 3D facial identity from expression behaviors, eliminating identity-based interference in the reaction generation process, which are integrated with audio-visual features through a cross-attention mechanism. Experiments show that our framework achieved the enhanced diversity and synchrony in the generated facial reactions. © 2025 IEEE.

The utilization of Wi-Fi-based technology for pervasive indoor user identification has gained prominence due to its cost-effective nature and compatibility with user devices. Previous works proposed capturing the media access control (MAC) address emitted from a user's device and using Information Elements (IE)-based MAC de-randomization methods to mitigate the impairment caused by random MAC. However, IE types of different Wi-Fi devices are not consistently differentiated, leading to identification errors in IE-based methods. Additionally, typical Wi-Fi fingerprinting approaches require densely pre-deployed Wi-Fi stations, contradicting the principle of pervasive localization. To address these challenges, we propose the mobile single station-based user identification (***) technique, which leverages Wi-Fi mobile single stations for pervasive indoor user identification. *** includes mobile single station localization (MSL) and MAC de-randomization based on users' spatio-temporal location and IE information (***). MSL can be implemented on a standard mobile Wi-Fi station without extensive pre-deployment. *** performs MAC de-randomization using the LIC algorithm to identify users with random MAC addresses. Experimental results demonstrate that *** outperforms previous IE-based user identification methods and multi-station localization techniques. MSL achieves a localization error of 1.15 meters which is better than multi-station with 12 APs of 1.40 meters. *** demonstrates an identification accuracy of 95.24% which is better than AIMAC of 85.48%. © 2014 IEEE.

Content-decoupled Contrastive Learning-based Implicit Degradation Modeling for Blind Image Super-Resolution Supplementary Material

Implicit degradation modeling-based blind super-resolution (SR) has attracted more increasing attention in the community due to its excellent generalization to complex degradation scenarios and wide application range. How to extract more discriminative degradation representations and fully adapt them to specific image features is the key to this task. In this paper, we propose a new Content-decoupled Contrastive Learning-based blind image super-resolution (CdCL) framework following the typical blind SR pipeline. This framework introduces negative-free contrastive learning technique for the first time to model the implicit degradation representation, in which a new cyclic shift sampling strategy is designed to ensure decoupling between content features and degradation features from the data perspective, thereby improving the purity and discriminability of the learned implicit degradation space. In addition, we propose a detail-aware implicit degradation adapting module that can better adapt degradation representations to specific LR features by enhancing the basic adaptation unit's perception of image details, significantly reducing the overall SR model complexity. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real data show that our method achieves highly competitive quantitative and qualitative results in various degradation settings while obviously reducing parameters and computational costs, validating the feasibility of designing practical and lightweight blind SR tools.
