With the rapid increase in cloud services and the increasing shift toward them, balancing the cloud load has become a critical research issue. The increasing demand from customers for technology services worldwide is largely due to its direct impact on performance quality. Therefore, to provide better service quality, it is essential to consider reducing response time and cost in load balancing. This paper addresses the load-balancing problem by optimizing response time and computing cost in cloud computing systems. Specifically, we first formulated the load balancing problem in cloud computing mathematically by designing an objective function that optimizes response time and cost, including constraints to ensure task assignment to a single virtual machine (VM) and resource limits are not exceeded. To solve this optimization problem, we proposed a hybrid algorithm, ACOCSA, that combines Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) and Crow Search Algorithm (CSA). We implemented the ACOCSA algorithm, evaluated the response time, cost, and load balancing metrics, and found that our algorithm performed better in terms of response time and computational cost, and showed good fairness among VMs. © 2025 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. Variance-SNR Based Noise Suppression on Linear Canonical Choi-Williams Distribution of LFM Signals

By solving the existing expectation-signal-to-noise ratio(expectation-SNR) based inequality model of the closed-form instantaneous cross-correlation function type of Choi-Williams distribution(CICFCWD),the linear canonical transform(LCT) free parameters selection strategies obtained are usually *** the second-order moment variance outperforms the first-order moment expectation in accurately characterizing output SNRs, this paper uses the variance analysis technique to improve parameters selection strategies. The CICFCWD's average variance of deterministic signals embedded in additive zero-mean stationary circular Gaussian noise processes is first obtained. Then the so-called variance-SNRs are defined and applied to model a variance-SNR based inequality. A stronger inequalities system is also formulated by integrating expectation-SNR and variance-SNR based inequality models. Finally, a direct application of the system in noisy one-component and bi-component linear frequency-modulated(LFM) signals detection is studied. Analytical algebraic constraints on LCT free parameters newly derived seem more accurate than the existing ones, achieving better noise suppression effects. Our methods have potential applications in optical, radar, communication and medical signal processing.

Transparent and trustworthy interpretation of COVID-19 features in chest X-rays using explainable AI

The potential of AI-based disease prediction models for assessing COVID-19 patients outperforms conventional methods. However, their black-box nature has limited their applicability. This study explores the approach for COVID-19 identification by integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods with Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), such as EfficientNet and DenseNet, applied for medical imaging. To address the black-box challenge, the study incorporates eXplainable AI (XAI) techniques, including LIME, Grad-CAM, and a novel variant of Grad-CAM++, termed "Modified Grad-CAM++ ". The modification aims to enhance explanations for COVID-19 predictions, improving the interpretability and transparency of the model’s decision-making process. Collaborating with expert radiologists, the study validates the Modified Grad-CAM++ using a separate dataset of radiologist-validated chest X-ray (CXR) images. The Integrated Uncertainty Calculation (IUC) metric is introduced as an evaluation measure for the Modified Grad-CAM++. Remarkably, both EfficientNet and DenseNet achieve high diagnostic precision, with accuracy rates of 98% and 97%, respectively. The integration of XAI algorithms enhances the interpretability and transparency of predictions, ensuring clinical relevance and validity. These precise AI models offer valuable support to healthcare professionals in decision-making and resource allocation. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

An Evolutionary Multitasking Algorithm for Efficient Multiobjective Recommendations

Represented by evolutionary algorithms and swarm intelligence algorithms, nature-inspired metaheuristics have been successfully applied to recommender systems and amply demonstrated effectiveness, in particular, for multiobjective recommendation. Owing to the population-based search paradigm, these algorithms can produce a number of recommendation lists, making diverse tradeoffs between multiple metrics and meeting the requirements of accuracy, novelty, diversity, and other user preferences. However, these algorithms are criticized for the low efficiency of the optimization process, especially when the number of users is large. To address this issue, this article proposes an evolutionary multitasking-based recommendation method, where each task corresponds to a user and all the tasks are optimized simultaneously, thus highly improving the efficiency of recommendation. To enhance the convergence speed, all the users are divided into multiple populations according to the similarity between their preferences, where each population evolves with internal knowledge transfer between users, and all the populations evolve with external knowledge transfer between populations. Experimental results on various datasets verify that the proposed method can better balance between multiple metrics than classical and deep neural network-based recommendation methods and exhibits significantly higher efficiency than evolutionary multiobjective optimization-based recommendation methods. © 2024 IEEE. A Low-Cost UAV Task Offloading Scheme Based on Trustable and Trackable Data Routing

As a promising edge computing paradigm, task offloading involves transferring data from resource-limited devices to high-performance servers to expedite processing. However, devices in isolated networks without direct Internet connections face challenges in task offloading. To address this issue, we propose a novel Low-cost Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Task Offloading Scheme based on Trustable and Trackable Data Routing (LTOTT) for deadline-aware tasks in non-connected networks. The main contributions of LTOTT are as follows: (1) A novel dissemination method that devices route different numbers of Copied Tasks (CTs) and Task Computing Notices (TCNs) in different directions based on task deadlines is proposed to enable the UAV to get tasks earlier and complete them in time. (2) In order to reduce the risk of malicious attacks during the spreading of CTs and TCNs, a trust evaluation based on a trackable data routing method is proposed to ensure secure transmission. (3) In addition, based on the evaluated trust and the received information, a dynamic UAV flight trajectory optimization is proposed to enable tasks completed before their deadlines. A large number of experimental results show that LTOTT increases the task completion rate by 41.41%–134.15%;reduces average delay and UAV's flight distance respectively by 26.88%–51.52%, 16.37%–73.40% compared with the existing schemes. © 2016 IEEE.

Emerging technologies of Agriculture 4.0 such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Computing, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and 5G network services are being rapidly deployed to address smart farming implementation-related concerns and to fulfill the increasing food demand of the expanding demographics. Adoption of 5G offers numerous benefits including Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) required to reduce communication delays in time-sensitive applications, non-public networks to allocate part of the frequency spectrum on demand, and network slicing to fulfill the diverse requirements requested by a specific application etc. for realizing the full potential of Agriculture 4.0 operations. In this paper, a comprehensive review of 5G radio enhancements, enabling technologies, and multi-tier heterogeneous 5G network architecture are presented. The main focus is to concisely cover AI integration with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) leveraging 5G technologies and Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) for supporting intelligent, long-range, cost-effective and energy-saving data transmission across the network and seamless Agriculture 4.0 operations. Cloud computing architectures that permit centralized management of Agriculture 4.0 operations through sharing of computations, configurable networks, and servers are also studied in detail to reveal the need for edge computation as increasing number of IoT devices allows only to perform complex computations on-site. Extensive survey reveals the recent advances of 5G-enabled Agriculture 4.0 operations, future research opportunities of 5G networks including Energy Harvesting techniques for the deployment of massive to critical IoT applications, and the socio-demographic impacts of 5G networks in Agriculture 4.0 to support ubiquitous connectivity of exponentially increasing IoT devices. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Unstructured Numerical Image Dataset Separation (UNIDS) method employing an enhanced unsupervised clustering technique. The objective is to delineate an optimal number of distinct groups within the input grayscale (G-S) image content, utilizing the improved limited iteration agglomerative clustering (iLIAC) clustering technique for the separation and enhancement of picture elements. The UNIDS method is structured into two primary stages: partitioning and validation. In the partitioning stage, the UNIDS method identifies an appropriate number of discrete clusters within the grayscale image using the iLIAC technique, eliminating the need for predetermined procedures. Subsequently, the method evaluates the similarity and deviation among data elements within the same group in the resultant image dataset. Additionally, it assesses the proximity and inters severance among clusters in the outcome of the image dataset through the partitioning process. Empirical results indicate that the UNIDS system excels in the spontaneous identification of an optimal number of discrete clusters within the input G-S image. The system demonstrates superior thickness, reduced deviation among data elements within the same cluster, increased inter-separation, and diminished inter-closeness between cluster elements. Furthermore, empirical analysis establishes the superior performance of the UNIDS approach compared to existing clustering techniques. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Enhancing surrogate-assisted evolutionary optimization for medium-scale expensive problems: a two-stage approach with unsupervised feature learning and Q-learning

This paper presents a novel two-stage progressive search approach with unsupervised feature learning and Q-learning (TSLL) to enhance surrogate-assisted evolutionary optimization for medium-scale expensive problems. The method attempts to address the challenges posed by multi-polar and multi-variable coupling properties in such problems. During the iteration, TSLL splits the optimization process into two distinct stages. First, two unsupervised feature learning techniques: principal component analysis (PCA) and Autoencoder, are utilized to improve the representation of potential optimal samples in the solution space. PCA is used for feature reduction, extracting the most important features. On the other hand, Autoencoder focuses on reconstructing features within the medium-scale solution space. To ensure comprehensive exploration of the entire solution space, TSLL employs two distinct surrogate modeling approaches along with Q-learning in the second stage to dynamically select the mutation strategy for the differential evolution operator. Numerous experiments demonstrate the superiority of TSLL over five state-of-the-art surrogate-assisted approaches and two sophisticated evolutionary algorithms including the winner of CEC 2017 on medium-scale benchmark problems and a wind farm layout problem. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Video Moment Retrieval (VMR) involves locating specific moments within a video based on natural language queries. However, existing VMR methods that employ various strategies for cross-modal alignment still face challenges such as limited understanding of fine-grained semantics, semantic overlap, and sparse constraints. To address these limitations, we propose a novel Concept Decomposition Transformer (CDTR) model for VMR. CDTR introduces a semantic concept decomposition module that disentangles video moments and sentence queries into concept representations, reflecting the relevance between various concepts and capturing fine-grained semantics which is crucial for cross-modal matching. These decomposed concept representations are then used as pseudo-labels, determined as positive or negative samples by adaptive concept-specific thresholds. Subsequently, fine-grained concept alignment is performed in video intra-modal and textual-visual cross-modal, aligning different conceptual components within features, enhancing the model’s ability to distinguish fine-grained semantics, and alleviating issues related to semantic overlap and sparse constraints. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the CDTR, outperforming state-of-the-art methods on three widely used datasets: QVHighlights, Charades-STA, and TACoS.
