Suction Caisson Performance in Sand under Cyclic Loading: Numerical Modeling Using SANISAND-MS

With the advantages of low construction costs and rapid installation, suction caissons are widely used as foundations in offshore engineering. This paper investigates the behavior of suction caisson foundations located in sandy soil under horizontal cyclic loads. The upgraded simple anisotropic sand constitutive model with memory surface (SANISAND-MS model) is employed to accurately capture the sand's cyclic behavior. To calibrate the parameters of the upgraded SANISAND-MS model, a series of triaxial drained monotonic and cyclic tests was performed. The effects of load idealization and loading sequence on the cyclic behavior of sand are studied based on the element test results, and the effects of load idealization on the cyclic response of suction caissons are studied from a finite-element simulation perspective. The triaxial test results indicate that load idealization slightly affects strain accumulation in both loose and dense sand. Based on simulation results, it is found that the loading sequence of load packages with varying amplitudes has a minor effect on the rotation accumulation of the suction caisson. The current load idealization method used in the engineering design practice of suction caissons is acceptable under drained conditions. © 2025 American Society of civil Engineers.

Analytical Method for the Deformation of an Existing Tunnel Undercrossed by New Twin Tunnels Considering Strengthening the Foundation

The existing tunnel is protected and reinforced before excavation to control its deformation caused by new twin tunnel excavation in homogeneous foundations. In addition to soil, various other reinforced structures strengthen the foundation, which should be treated as nonhomogeneous. In this work, a simplified method is proposed to calculate the equivalent elastic parameters of inhomogeneous underground pile-beam-plate structures (PBPs). A calculation method for longitudinal deformation of soil induced by the excavation of a horseshoe-shaped tunnel considering the nonuniform deformation mode of soil is also developed. Based on the equivalent elastic parameters of PBPs and the displacement solutions of the uneven deformation model of soil, the additional stress induced by the new twin tunnels undercrossing the existing tunnel is calculated. Subsequently, a series of short beams with shear, tension, and compression springs are used as a simplified model to characterize the existing tunnel. The deformation of the existing tunnel can be solved using the principle of minimum potential energy. Finally, combined with the PBPs case, the influence of the deformation and internal forces of the existing tunnel is parametrically analyzed. The effectiveness of the analytical method proposed in the present work is validated by numerical simulation and on-site measurement. © 2025 American Society of civil Engineers.

Later, it discovered the relationship between entropy and information entropy. This broke down the barriers between disciplines and derived many related conceptual principles. Among them, the principle of maximum entropy is widely used in disciplines such as finance, computer, etc. and many applications and technologies based on it was emerged. This paper introduces the principle of entropy and maximum entropy principle and reviews the application and development of the maximum entropy principle in analysis of clustering, decision and spectrum. Drawing upon our literature survey this paper presents a new application of maximum entropy principle, called elastic net of clustering based on maximum entropy (ENCM), which applies the maximum entropy principle to elastic net to change the objective function to solve clustering. Experiments verify that this method could effectively improve the result of clustering.

In large-scale disaster events, the planning of optimal rescue routes depends on the object detection ability at the disaster scene, with one of the main challenges being the presence of dense and occluded objects. Existing methods, which are typically based on the RGB modality, struggle to distinguish targets with similar colors and textures in crowded environments and are unable to identify obscured objects. To this end, we first construct two multimodal dense and occlusion vehicle detection datasets for large-scale events, utilizing RGB and height map modalities. Based on these datasets, we propose a multimodal collaboration network for dense and occluded vehicle detection, MuDet for short. MuDet hierarchically enhances the completeness of discriminable information within and across modalities and differentiates between simple and complex samples. MuDet includes three main modules: Unimodal Feature Hierarchical Enhancement (Uni-Enh), Multimodal Cross Learning (Mul-Lea), and Hard-easy Discriminative (He-Dis) Pattern. Uni-Enh and Mul-Lea enhance the features within each modality and facilitate the cross-integration of features from two heterogeneous modalities. He-Dis effectively separates densely occluded vehicle targets with significant intra-class differences and minimal inter-class differences by defining and thresholding confidence values, thereby suppressing the complex background. Experimental results on two re-labeled multimodal benchmark datasets, the 4K-SAI-LCS dataset, and the ISPRS Potsdam dataset, demonstrate the robustness and generalization of the MuDet. Semianalytical Solution for the Transient Response of Multilayered Unsaturated Viscoelastic Porous Media

Taking into account the stratification and viscoelastic properties of unsaturated porous media, the Poynting-Thomson viscoelastic model is integrated into the Biot-type wave equations tailored for unsaturated porous media, thereby formulating a set of one-dimensional viscoelastic governing equations that capture the transient response characteristics of unsaturated porous media. Based on the correspondence principle between elasticity and viscoelasticity, expressions for the solid-phase skeleton, particle, and shear modulus in the Laplace domain are derived. Subsequently, using the state-space method and Hamilton-Cayley theorem, the general solutions for the transient response of a single layer are derived. By combining boundary conditions, continuity conditions, and the transfer matrix method, the analytical solutions for the transient response results of any layer within the Laplace domain are obtained. Finally, the time-domain solutions are then obtained via the numerical inverse Laplace transform. The correctness of the proposed solutions is verified by comparing it with existing solutions. Analytical examples demonstrate that an increase in the dash-pot viscosity coefficient corresponds to a reduction in the response amplitudes of pore pressure and solid-phase displacement, indicating a notable effect of the dash-pot viscosity coefficient on wave propagation delay. Additionally, saturation levels are found to have a substantial impact on both wave velocity and hysteresis characteristics. © 2025 American Society of civil Engineers.

Rolling stock shunt operation planning in urban rail transit depots with maintenance consideration

This study investigates the daily rolling stock shunt operation planning in a rail depot. Given the layout of a depot and the rolling stocks (that arrive at and depart from this depot within an operation day) with given maintenance schedule, the studied problem lies in determining: 1) the position where each rolling stock is parked, outside washed, and/or maintained, and 2) the conflict-free shunting plan of rolling stocks to move within a depot. We transform the track-circuits in the depot into different multi-layer directed graphs to illustrate the shunting processes of rolling stocks. By means of these graphs, we formulate the studied problem as a mixed integer linear programming model by considering a more general variant of four requirements that make sense in practice but are not or rarely considered in previous works and by presenting a flexible technique to model the track capacity, to reduce the additional shunting movements of rolling stocks. Besides, we design a two-stage decomposition manner to efficiently solve real-life problem instances, wherein the problem in each stage is addressed by a presented logic-based Benders decomposition algorithm enhanced by customized acceleration mechanisms. Finally, a set of realistic and real-life instances with different scales (derived from the largest depot of the Chongqing Rail Transit Line 3 in China) are investigated. Computational results demonstrate that our best algorithm solves a real-life instance to optimality in approximately 8 s that is considerably shorter than the time of rail staffs to solve this instance manually, thus our approach can provide strong automatical computer-aided decision supports. Our approach is also very efficient in optimizing another objective that is also widely used, and can provide management insights to rail staffs. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Fatigue Performance of Hybrid FRP-Concrete-Steel Double-Skin Tubular Beams

Hybrid double-skin tubular beams (DSTBs) containing an outer fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) tube, annular concrete, and an inner steel tube have been used as girders or main elements of arch bridges. The fatigue behavior of DSTBs is of particular significance when they are employed as members for bridge construction, while the fatigue behavior of DSTBs has never been investigated. This study presents an experimental study on the static and fatigue behavior of hybrid DSTBs with different degrees of shear connection (i.e., configurations without shear connectors, with connectors at both ends and with connectors distributed along the entire span). Static tests demonstrated that the bearing capacity of hybrid DSTB specimens enhanced with an increasing degree of shear connection. Specimens with shear connectors spanning the entire beam effectively delayed the onset of cracks, postponed the yielding of the steel tube, and suppressed slips between the concrete and the steel tube. In fatigue tests, a gradual decrease in the bending stiffness of hybrid DSTBs as the number of loading cycles increased. A higher degree of shear connection was found to significantly suppress the slip between the concrete and the steel tube during fatigue loading. However, it was associated with a decrease in fatigue life. The higher upper limit load resulted in more accumulated damage in the hybrid DSTBs over the same loading cycles, demonstrating to be a crucial factor influencing their fatigue life. © 2025 American Society of civil Engineers.
