Instant messaging (IM) has become increasingly popular due to its social functionality. Despite its popularity and large user base, little has been done to the analysis and characteristic of the IM traffic, especially at the chat session level. In this paper, we analyze the traffic of two popular instant messaging systems, Yahoo messenger and MSN/Windows Live Messenger. We mainly consider the distribution of chat session level traffic between end users, and find the distribution in many cases follows a power law, as shown in recent work. This power law finding was previously used to support the hypothesis that chat interval time has a power law tail. We further show the scale property by V-T plot and R/S estimation. That is, the interval time is characterized by a strong self-similarity for larger time scales. And the packet arrival times are independent explaining the weak correlation of the data. Our analysis sheds light on instant messaging system design and optimization and provides a scientific basis for instant messaging traffic generation. ©2009 IEEE.

We investigate social cascades, or how information propagation through social links in the online social networks. Based on the analysis of one of the largest available datasets collected from Flickr social network in detail, we shed light on the propagation pattern and cascade characteristic of the photos over the Flickr social network, We also apply a simple conceptual model that mimics the spread and dissemination of information on the Flickr social network, and produces information cascades very similar to those found in real network. With a single threshold parameter, this model can predict whether a photo will flourish or flounder in the network. Some interesting findings of the social linking and information propagation structure are also reported in this paper. © 2009 IEEE.

A measurement of the cross section for the production of an isolated photon in association with jets in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy s=7 TeV is presented. Photons are reconstructed in the pseudorapidity range |ηγ|<1.37 and with a transverse energy ETγ>25 GeV. Jets are reconstructed in the rapidity range |yjet|<4.4 and with a transverse momentum pTjet>20 GeV. The differential cross section dσ/dETγ is measured, as a function of the photon transverse energy, for three different rapidity ranges of the leading-pT jet: |yjet|<1.2, 1.2≤|yjet|<2.8 and 2.8≤|yjet|<4.4. For each rapidity configuration the same-sign (ηγyjet≥0) and opposite-sign (ηγyjet<0) cases are studied separately. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 37 pb−1, collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations are found to be in fair agreement with the data, except for ETγ≲45 GeV, where the theoretical predictions overestimate the measured cross sections.

Multicast is widely applied for multimedia communications in Internet. The effective multicast routing is the key technology to the communications. The Qos of multi-constrained multicast routing problem deserves more attention. The objective function is to minimize the cost and meet multiple constraints to realize high Qos. The solutions' fitness is obtained by the concentration mechanism of immune algorithm and the affinity is helpful to the probability update strategy. The node linkage which belongs to the excellent solution has greater probability to be chosen. During the evolutionary process of the algorithm the constraint equation is dynamic adjusted to avoid unnecessary search and shorten the search time. Each invalid path is recorded into the Tabu table as a constraint to guide the next iteration. The heuristic Immune-PBIL algorithm is tested on a network topology and some multicast routing demand is considered. The result also shows that the advanced evolutionary strategies according to the Qos are high efficient and the global search capability is improved. ©2009 IEEE.

The paper puts forward a method of locating highspeed rail based on remote sensing and geography information technology using ant algorithm. High-speed rail location design factors are mainly considered: the topographical condition, geomorphy, geology, hydrology, layout plan, environmental influence, engineering reliability, security, investment income and so on. The decision for these factors is the key to the railway location design optimization. In this paper, high-speed rail location system is established based on GIS technology. The design parameters are obtained by a series of analyses to the influence factors. The analyses include buffer analysis, overlay analysis, network analysis and hierarchical analysis. By adjusting the technical constraints or environmental indicators, the multi-factor, multi-parameter comprehensive quantitative evaluation system for high-speed rail location is realized. Finally the optimal railway location is obtained using ant algorithm. ©2009 IEEE.

Robust fault detection and diagnosis for uncertain nonlinear systems

This paper considers robust fault detection and diagnosis for input uncertain nonlinear systems. It proposes a multi-objective fault detection criterion so that the fault residual is sensitive to the fault but insensitive to the uncertainty as much as possible. Then the paper solves the proposed criterion by maximizing the smallest singular value of the transformation from faults to fault detection residuals while minimizing the largest singular value of the transformation from input uncertainty to the fault detection residuals. This method is applied to an aircraft which has a fault in the left elevator or rudder. The simulation results show the proposed method can detect the control surface failures rapidly and efficiently.

For preemptive scheduling,the discrete scheduling has the same capability as the continuous scheduling. However,most work previously done has been focused on the continuous scheduling. In this paper,a discrete analysis approach Empty Slots method is discussed and applied to fixed priority scheduling for constraint-deadline task model. Then a new schedulability test using the Empty-Slots method is presented. Compared with classical schedulability tests for continuous scheduling,this test is more convenient to be used and more efficient to tackle practical problems.

This paper introduces the concept and framework of artificial classroom (AC) for the first time by employing artificial societies. Our solution is to use the artificial society approach for modeling artificial classroom. In the artificial society approach, agent-based simulation is used to explore and understand classroom misbehaviors issues. Student agents are selected as three kinds of typical agents and actions of the agents such as communicating, affecting and changing are all designed in detail. Thus, interactions among various agents and between agents and their environment are realized. Using NetLogo multi-agent platform, simulation programs of the model are developed. The simulation results reproduce the emergent pattern in time space and physical space.

The load balance is a critical issue of distributed Hash table （DHT）, and the previous work shows that there exists O（logn） imbalance of load in Chord. The load distribution of Chord, Pastry, and the virtual servers （VS） balancing scheme and deduces the closed form expressions of the probability density function （PDF） and cumulative distribution function （CDF） of the load in these DHTs is analyzes. The analysis and simulation show that the load of all these DHTs obeys the gamma distribution with similar formed parameters.

The Intelligent evolutionary algorithm-probability learning based algorithm is applied to multiple constraints Qos(Quality of Service) routing problem of network. The objective function is to minimize the cost and meet multiple constraints. The procedure and the choice probability’s update strategy of PBIL algorithm are designed according to the characteristics of multiple constraints Qos routing problem. During the evolutionary process of the algorithm the constraint equation is dynamic adjusted to avoid unnecessary search and save the search time. Each invalid path is recorded as a constraint to guide the next iteration. And the probability is updated according to the solutions’ fitness. The node linkage which belongs to the excellent solution has greater probability to be chosen. The modified PBIL algorithm is tested on a network topology and some routing demands is considered. The good adaptability, validity and stability performance are fully shown by the results.
