In an era where Intelligent Decision Support Systems (IDSS) are integral to managing the vast data from Internet of Everything (IoE) systems, this study introduces IDSDeep-CCD, a novel IDSS approach for detecting concrete cracks, a critical issue in civil infrastructure maintenance. Traditional visual inspection methods for crack detection are time-consuming and error-prone. To address this, IDSDeep-CCD employs deep learning, utilizing an open-source dataset of concrete crack images for enhanced accuracy. The system's two-stage approach, featuring feature extraction via pre-trained models and a fully connected network for classification, significantly outperforms existing methods. Our results demonstrate a remarkable 99.9% accuracy rate in crack detection without data augmentation, marking a notable advancement in automatic detection technology. This breakthrough offers practical benefits for the industry by enabling more precise and efficient identification of concrete cracks, paving the way for timely and accurate remedial actions. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

While rice pests and diseases significantly impact crop yields, existing deep learning methods for their detection face challenges with accuracy and deployment complexity. Addressing these issues, this study proposes the YOLOv8-HSFPN, an advanced detection framework. Firstly, it features an innovative High-level Select Feature Pyramid Network (HSFPN) neck network that effectively integrates high-level and low-level feature sets for enhanced feature fusion. Secondly, the addition of a deformable self-attention module further refines the model’s adaptability to the varying shapes and locations of targets, dynamically adjusting to the salient features. The proposed model has undergone comparative and ablation studies alongside YOLOv8, YOLOv9, and YOLOv5, confirming its improved accuracy and streamlined deployment. This integration results in a robust detection model that not only marks a significant leap in accuracy, evidenced by a 3% empirical increase over the standard YOLOv8, but is also remarkably compact. At a mere 3.97MB, this substantial 49.87% size reduction compared to its predecessors renders it exceptionally suitable for devices with limited computational resources, thereby enhancing its viability in practical, real-world applications. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Increasingly popular decentralized applications (dApps) with complex application logic incur significant overhead for executing smart contract transactions, which greatly limits public block chain performance. Pre-executing transactions off the critical path can mitigate substantial I/O and computation costs during execution. However, pre-execution does not yield any state transitions, rendering the system state inconsistent with actual execution. This inconsistency can lead to deviations in pre-execution paths when processing smart contracts with multiple state-related branches, thus diminishing pre-execution effectiveness. In this paper, we develop Seer, a novel public block chain execution engine that incorporates fine-grained branch prediction to fully exploit pre-execution effectiveness. Seerpredicts state-related branches using a two-level prediction approach, reducing inconsistent execution paths more efficiently than executing all possible branches. To enable effective reuse of pre execution results, Seer employs checkpoint-based fast-path execution, enhancing transaction execution for both successful and unsuccessful predictions. Evaluations with realistic block chain workloads demonstrate that Seer delivers an average of 27.7× transaction-level speedup and an overall 20.6× speedup in the execution phase over vanilla Ethereum, outperforming existing block chain execution acceleration solutions. © 2025, VLDB Endowment, All rights reserved.

High-fidelity(HiFi)sequencing has facilitated the assembly and analysis of the most repetitive region of the genome,the ***,our current understanding of human centromeres is based on a relatively small number of telomere-to-telomere assemblies,which have not yet captured its full *** this study,we investigated the genomic diversity of human centromere higher order repeats(HORs)via both HiFi reads and haplotype-resolved assemblies from hundreds of samples drawn from ongoing pangenome-sequencing projects and reprocessed them via a novel HOR annotation pipeline,*** used this wealth of data to provide a global survey of the centromeric HOR landscape;in particular,we found that 23 HORs presented significant copy number variability between *** detected three centromere genotypes with unbalanced population frequencies on chromosomes 5,8,and *** inter-assembly comparison of HOR loci further revealed that while HOR array structures are diverse,they nevertheless tend to form a number of specific landscapes,each exhibiting different levels of HOR subunit expansion and possibly reflecting a cyclical evolutionary transition from homogeneous to nested structures and back.

AoI-aware transmission control in real-time mmwave energy harvesting systems: a risk-sensitive reinforcement learning approach

The evolution of enabling technologies in wireless communications has paved the way for supporting novel applications with more demanding QoS requirements, but at the cost of increasing the complexity of optimizing the digital communication chain. In particular, Millimeter Wave (mmWave) communications provide an abundance of bandwidth, and energy harvesting supplies the network with a continual source of energy to facilitate self-sustainability; however, harnessing these technologies is challenging due to the stochastic dynamics of the mmWave channel as well as the random sporadic nature of the harvested energy. In this paper, we aim at the dynamic optimization of update transmissions in mmWave energy harvesting systems in terms of Age of Information (AoI). AoI has recently been introduced to quantify information freshness and is a more stringent QoS metric compared to conventional delay and throughput. However, most prior art has only addressed average-based AoI metrics, which can be insufficient to capture the occurrence of rare but high-impact freshness violation events in time-critical scenarios. We formulate a control problem that aims to minimize the long-term entropic risk measure of AoI samples by configuring the “sense & transmit” of updates. Due to the high complexity of the exponential cost function, we reformulate the problem with an approximated mean-variance risk measure as the new objective. Under unknown system statistics, we propose a two-timescale model-free risk-sensitive reinforcement learning algorithm to compute a control policy that adapts to the trio of channel, energy, and AoI states. We evaluate the efficiency of the proposed scheme through extensive simulations.

Adaptive Attribute-Based Honey Encryption: A Novel Solution for Cloud Data Security

A basic procedure for transforming readable data into encoded forms is encryption, which ensures security when the right decryption keys are used. Hadoop is susceptible to possible cyber-attacks because it lacks built-in security measures, even though it can effectively handle and store enormous datasets using the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS). The increasing number of data breaches emphasizes how urgently creative encryption techniques are needed in cloud-based big data settings. This paper presents Adaptive Attribute-Based Honey Encryption (AABHE), a state-of-the-art technique that combines honey encryption with Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption (CP-ABE) to provide improved data security. Even if intercepted, AABHE makes sure that sensitive data cannot be accessed by unauthorized parties. With a focus on protecting huge files in HDFS, the suggested approach achieves 98% security robustness and 95% encryption efficiency, outperforming other encryption methods including Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption (CP-ABE), Key-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption (KB-ABE), and Advanced Encryption Standard combined with Attribute-Based Encryption (AES+ABE). By fixing Hadoop’s security flaws, AABHE fortifies its protections against data breaches and enhances Hadoop’s dependability as a platform for processing and storing massive amounts of data.

According to WHO, lung infection is one of the most serious problems across the world, especially for children under five years old and older people over sixteen years old. In this study, we designed a deep learning-based model to aid medical practitioners in their diagnostic process. Here, U-Net based segmentation framework is considered to get the region of interest (ROI) of the lung area from the chest x-ray images. Two standard deep learning models and a developed CNN model comprise this framework. A deep ensemble framework method is presented to detect COVID-19 disease from a collection of chest X-ray images of disparate cases in both segment-free and segmented-based lung images. Different public datasets were used for segmentation and classification to test the system’s robustness. The performance of segmentation and classification approaches returns promising outcomes compared to the state-of-the-art. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Recommender Systems are useful information filtering tools that have reduced information overload over the web. Collaborative filtering (CF) is one of the extensively used recommendation techniques. Traditional CF captures user-item ratings in a two-dimensional rating matrix which does not sufficiently convey user preferences. Ratings based on several criteria are incorporated into CF to develop multi-criteria recommender systems (MCRS). MCRS are more efficient and cater to the users’ needs with more satisfaction. However, there are certain issues like multidimensionality, sparsity, and cold start associated with MCRS. This paper aims to study the MCRS and investigate efficient solutions for existing issues. In this direction, we proposed a modified similarity measure that improves the accuracy of neighborhood generation and rating prediction. In the proposed approach, the users are clustered based on multi-criteria ratings, which reduces the data sparsity and multidimensionality issues in MCRS. Digital Image Processing (DIP) is the ability to manipulate digital photographs via algorithms for pattern detection, segmentation, enhancement, and noise reduction. In addition, the Internet of Things (IoT) acts as the eye and system for all DIP in various applications. It can possess a camera or another image sensor in order to capture real-time data from its environment. All vital data is processed by image processing in such a way that it recognizes the object, detects an anomaly, and automatically decides in real-time. In addition, in an IoT system, the median filter is the technique used for noise reduction by substituting the value of the pixel with the central value of the surrounding pixels. It provides speed and efficiency for quick analysis in all IoT systems. However, the images can get corrupted, especially in resource-constrained IoT devices with small cameras, because of random glitches. Moreover, using new quantum technology like atomic-scale silicon dangling bond (DB) logic circuits, which have advanced in fabrication and become a strong contender for field-coupled nano-computing, can solve previous problems in IoT systems. In this paper, we propose a unique quantum CSM based on two new proposed Mux and De-mux. The proposed CSM can be used for computational circuits like median filter circuits (MFC) in a wide range of digital circuits, specifically IoT devices. The proposed design is verified and validated using the powerful SiQAD tool. When comparing CSM to the newest designs, the suggested quantum circuit uses 85% less energy and takes up 61% less area. © 2014 IEEE.
