The use of serious educational games has many advantages, offering immersive, engaging and fun environments that require deep thinking and complex problem solving within a construct of overcoming obstacles and challenges. Developing new games, however, to support broad and rapidly evolving disciplines has remained time consuming, expensive, and requiring the expertise of game designers, software developers, software engineering educators, and players. Here, we introduce a semi-automated component-based engineering approach for generating serious educational games, which enables educators to rapidly and independently develop their own games across diverse educational topics. The game components are presented in this paper using a simplified example game on basic algebra for illustration. © 2013 IEEE.

This NSF-funded community-building (CB) project brings together Michigan State University (MSU), Lansing Community College (LCC), and the Corporation for a Skilled Workforce (CSW) to design and implement a process to create a collaboratively-defined undergraduate computing education within the engineering and technology fields in alignment with the computational problem-solving abilities needed to transform mid-Michigan's economy and workforce. In this WIP we outline the process we are developing to ensure that a wide variety of stakeholders - business, community leaders and post secondary educators collaborate to identify workforce computational skills, define how these skills can be integrated across a curriculum, and develop revised curricula that integrate computational problem-solving across engineering departmental courses. By documenting, evaluating and making the process explicit, this process can serve as a model for national efforts to revitalize undergraduate computing education in engineering, and should be extensible to other computing education reform efforts.

To remove the redundant features extracted by using 2DPCA methods, a face recognition method is presented based on 2DPCA and fuzzy-rough technique in this paper. The proposed method selects the important features for classification by using attribute reduction in fuzzy rough sets theory. The experimental results show the proposed method outperforms the face recognition methods based on 2DPCA. © 2010 IEEE.

Instance selection is one of important steps in pattern classification. Recently, instance selection is a hot research topic in pattern recognition, data mining, machine learning, and draws many researchers' attention. By instance selection, we can eliminate the redundant instances in the datasets, and select more important and fewer samples as training set to train a classifier with good generalization performance. In this paper, we present an instance selection method based on supervised clustering, the main idea is to select instances belonging to inner boundary and outer boundary of clusters. The experimental results show that our proposed method is effective and efficient. © 2012 IEEE.

Design of e-learning and online tutoring as learning support for academic writing

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the development and assessment of learning support environments for academic writing that utilize ICT, such as e-learning and online tutoring, in Japanese higher education. First, the authors introduce the design of an e-learning writing program for the Japanese language and assess whether the program is an effective learning support tool for undergraduates. Second, the authors analyze and assess online tutoring support for academic writing and clarify the merits and disadvantages of online and offline tutoring at writing centers, then suggest instructional strategies by analyzing the writing tutoring process. Design/methodology/approach: The authors adopted e-learning goals to assess its effectiveness. The authors asked the participants questions they could answer from five-point scales, conducted a paired t-test, and included a free description-type questionnaire. Then, to assess online tutoring, the 12 students took pre- and post-test questionnaires, after which the authors conducted a Wilcoxon signed rank test. In addition, the authors carried out a Kruskal–Wallis rank sum test in order to confirm differences in satisfaction level and the effectiveness of face-to-face tutoring and online tutoring. Findings: By analyzing the pre- and post-test results, the t-test confirmed that the students found the e-learning system to be effective for nurturing academic literacy. This means the system is appropriate as a support tool for nurturing academic writing, especially writing knowledge and rules, and university must provide a comprehensive learning support environment including e-learning. Next, the authors found no statistically significant difference between face-to-face and online tutoring, although some problems with the writing process remained. Inspired by the certificateless public key encryption scheme proposed by Jong et al, we present a new certificateless authenticated key agreement protocol (CLAK). It is provably secure in the standard model. CLAK protocol provides perfect forward secrecy. Compared with a certificateless authenticated key agreement protocol which is only provable secure in the random oracle model, the new protocol is improved with respect to the security properties, computation and communication cost. © 2010 IEEE.

Single-cell multi-omics sequencing technologies allow simultaneous measurement of transcriptome and epigenome profiles in the same cell, providing unprecedented opportunities to dissect cell heterogeneity. Despite great efforts, conjoint analysis of single-cell multi-omics data still suffers from sparsity, high dimensionality and binary. In this study, we present a heterogeneous graph cross-omics attention model (scHGA), a computational tool based on a heterogeneous graph neural network combining two attention mechanisms to jointly analyze single-cell multi-omics data based on different protocols data, including SNARE-seq, scMT-seq and sci-CAR. To avoid the cell heterogeneity of single-omics data, scHGA automatically learns a cell association graph to capture neighbor information. The latent representation of aggregated cells generated by hierarchical attention can fuse knowledge across different omics to dissect cellular heterogeneity, providing a better scheme to characterize the features of cells. scHGA is an effective exploration of graph neural networks in single-cell multi-omics analysis, providing new insights into the understanding of single-cell sequencing data. © 2022 IEEE.

In this paper, we discuss how link stability and number of mobile nodes impact on end-to-end delay in mobile ad hoc network (MANET). We find that their relationship shows differently when there is a path between any arbitrary source-destination node pair in the network or not. Meanwhile, two models are proposed respectively based on the Cox proportional hazards model to reveal the relationship. It is shown that our analysis and simulations provide a good understanding of the relationship among link stability, number of mobile nodes and end-to-end delay in MANET. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper explores the use of online self assessment as a tool for guiding the assignment marking process. The study was motivated by a desire to assist staff in more efficiently completing assessment and to involve the students in the assessment process. Subsequently, the study evolved to overcome a deficit, being the failure to allow for automation of the inclusion of marking criteria in the assignment tool, in the learning Management System. Consequent creation of the assignment marking guide in the form of an online quiz enabled students to perform self assessment after their assignment submission. Evaluation of the process indicates student self assessment contributed to their learning, providing them with relatively immediate feedback. Additional benefits include an improved assessment process for staff, feedback for both students and staff, and a persistent record of the entire process. A project known as Lab-in-a-Box (LiaB) was developed in 2004 as one of the outcomes of a department-level reform within the Bradley Department of Electrical and computer engineering (ECE) at Virginia Tech, addressing a need that was identified through student and employer surveys for concrete examples of fundamental concepts in electrical engineering. LiaB is a set of 'hands-on' exercises in which students design, build, and test at home various d.c. and a.c. circuits using an inexpensive electronics kit, digital multimeter, and a software oscilloscope and, thus, has not require significant resources to implement. The inclusion of LiaB in our ECE curriculum has received overwhelmingly positive comments from the students as well as from faculty members who have used the kits for projects in upper division courses that have been traditionally lecture-based with no lab component and has been adopted by three community colleges. The aim of the first set of experiments that are under development, funded by a grant from the National science Foundation, is to reinforce abstract concepts on first-order and second-order RLC circuits introduced in the companion circuits lecture course. The students construct circuits with physical components rather than symbolic parts in PSpice and determine the time-varying voltage drops and currents in the circuit by direct measurement rather than by plugging values into their calculators. Experiments enable students to explore how the component tolerances, the initial state of the capacitor and/or inductor, and the frequency response of the circuit affects the output signal. An approach to integrate evaluation and assessment is being undertaken, where methods to measure the educational outcomes are considered concurrently with the development of the learning materials.
