In this global economy, the preparation of a globally competitive U.S. workforce with knowledge and understanding of critical computing concepts is essential. Our CPACE (Collaborative Process to Align Computing Education with engineering Workforce Needs) vision is to revitalize undergraduate computing education within the engineering and technology fields. Our objective is to design and implement a process to engage stakeholders from multiple sectors and identify the computational tools and problem-solving skills and define how these skills-directly informed by industry needs-can be integrated across disciplinary curricula. By explicitly integrating computing concepts and disciplinary problem solving, engineering graduates will enter the workforce with improved and practice-ready computational thinking that will enhance their problemsolving and design skills. We present the analysis of the computational skills and the strategies that we are using to map the workforce problem-solving requirements onto the foundational computer science principles. We outline the framework that we are using to identify opportunities for curricular integration between computer science concepts and the disciplinary engineering curricula. By documenting, evaluating, and making the process explicit, this process can serve as a model for national efforts to strengthen undergraduate computing education in engineering. ©2009 IEEE.

XiangShan, a rising star of RISC-V-based processors proposed by Chinese Academy of science, is famous for its high performance and agile methodology. At present, the second-generation Yanqi Lake architecture of XiangShan has already reached the frequency of 2GHz at the 14nm process node, which ranks the first in the field of open-source RISC-V-based processors. One of the key approaches that contribute to its high performance is prefetch. A timely and accurate prefetcher can effectively eliminate cache misses and thus hide memory access latency. Aiming at the specific environment of XiangShan, out-of-order and parallel, a stride-based prefetcher for the L1DCache is achieved on the Yanqi Lake structure of XiangShan. Serious benchmarks from SPEC2006 were run on XiangShan, the result of which demonstrates that our prefetcher improves the performance of XiangShan by an average of 2.5% and up to 13.3%. © 2022 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a novel transfer learning framework, named generalized subspace distribution adaptation (GSDA), to tackle the challenging cross-corpus speech emotion recognition problem. First, we learn a common low-dimensional feature subspace by utilizing a generalized subspace learning method. Second, we develop a novel distance metric to reduce the divergence between the source and target corpora, which can efficiently explore the similarity and dissimilarity information in the process of knowledge transfer. Third, to demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework, we apply GSDA to the traditional subspace learning algorithms. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments by using the low-level features and deep features on three popular emotional databases, i.e., Berlin, IEMOCAP, and CVE. The results demonstrate that the proposed framework can achieve better performance than several state-of-the-art transfer learning approaches. © 2023 IEEE.

There is great interest in understanding and influencing students' attraction to computing-related majors. This qualitative study is based on interviews with 31 students enrolled in introductory programming courses at two public universities in the United States. This paper presents a model of five factors that influence student decisions to major in CS and elaborates on our grounded theory analysis of one of these factors: how students assess their CS-related ability. We describe how students measure their ability in terms of speed, grades, and previous experience and how students make interpretations and decisions based upon these measurements. We found that students' interpretations were influenced by experiences in their environments and beliefs about ability as being fixed or malleable. © 2011 ACM.

The use of serious educational games has many advantages, offering immersive, engaging and fun environments that require deep thinking and complex problem solving within a construct of overcoming obstacles and challenges. Developing new games, however, to support broad and rapidly evolving disciplines has remained time consuming, expensive, and requiring the expertise of game designers, software developers, software engineering educators, and players. Here, we introduce a semi-automated component-based engineering approach for generating serious educational games, which enables educators to rapidly and independently develop their own games across diverse educational topics. The game components are presented in this paper using a simplified example game on basic algebra for illustration.

RFID technology offers an affordable and user-friendly solution for contactless identification of objects and individuals. However, the widespread adoption of RFID systems raises concerns regarding security and privacy. Vulnerabilities such as message tampering, interception, and eavesdropping pose significant risks to the integrity of the system. This study examines the effectiveness of two recently proposed ultra-lightweight RFID authentication protocols, URASP and KUAJB, in addressing these security challenges. Surprisingly, our findings reveal that both URASP and KUAJB protocols are susceptible to secret disclosure attacks, despite their claims of providing robust security. Consequently, the development of a truly ultra-lightweight protocol that ensures adequate security becomes a formidable task. As a potential solution, the enhancement of the URASP protocol through the integration of a simple cryptographic primitive is suggested to bolster its security measures. © 2013 IEEE.

The channel back-siltation problem has been restricting the development of channels,and its monitoring is limited by funds and natural ***,predicting the channel back-siltation situation in a timely and accurate manner is ***,a numerical simulation of the back-siltation problem in the sea area near the channel is of great significance to the maintenance of a *** this study,the back siltation of a deep-water channel in the Lanshan Port area of the Port of Rizhao after dredging is *** paper relies on the MIKE 21 software to establish the wave,tidal current,and sediment numerical models and uses measured data from two observation stations in the study area for *** this basis,taking one month as an example,the entire project channel was divided into five sections,and three observation points were set on each *** results show that the area with offshore siltation is located in the northerly direction of the artificial anti-wave *** occurred on the northern seabed in the sea a little farther from the *** occurred on the seabed surface far away from the shoreline,and with the increase in the distance from the shoreline,the amount of siltation in the south,center,and north became gradually closed,and the results can be used to guide actual engineering *** study will play a positive role in promoting the dredging project of Rizhao Lanshan Port.

This poster paper describes the authors' single-year National science Foundation (NSF) project DRL-1825007 titled, "DCL: Synthesis and Design Workshop on Digitally-Mediated Team learning" which has been conducted as one of nine awards within NSF-18-017: Principles for the Design of Digital STEM learning Environments. Beginning in September 2018, the project conducted the activities herein to deliver a three-day workshop on Digitally-Mediated Team learning (DMTL) to convene, invigorate, and task interdisciplinary science and engineering researchers, developers, and educators to coalesce the leading strategies for digital team learning. The deliverable of the workshop is a White Paper composed to identify one-year, three-year, and five-year research and practice roadmaps for highly-adaptable environments for computer-supported collaborative learning within STEM curricula. As subject to the chronology of events, highlights of the White Paper's outcomes will be showcased within the poster itself. Collaborations during this workshop identified near-term and future research directions to facilitate adaptable digital environments for highly-effective, rewarding, and scalable team-based learning. An emphasis of the workshop included the personalization of collaborations among diverse learners by automating the identification and utilization of learners' efficacies and knowledge gaps to create complementary collaborative teams that maximize avenues for peer teaching and learning. The workshop targeted the utilization and efficacy of next-generation learning architectures through a focus on instructional technologies that facilitate digitally-mediated team-based learning. These included technical objectives of: (1) identifying new research in learning analytics required to automate more optimal composition, formation, and adaptation of learner design teams;(2) detecting advances in physical and virtual learning environments that can achieve more effective and scalable observa

Visual object tracking is a challenging computer vision task with numerous real-world applications. Here we propose a simple but efficient Spectral Filter Tracking (SFT) method. To characterize rotational and translation invariance of tracking targets, the candidate image region is models as a pixelwise grid graph. Instead of the conventional graph matching, we convert the tracking into a plain least square regression problem to estimate the best center coordinate of the target. But different from the holistic regression of correlation filter based methods, SFT can operate on localized surrounding regions of each pixel (i.e., vertex) by using spectral graph filters, which thus is more robust to resist local variations and cluttered background. To bypass the eigenvalue decomposition problem of the graph Laplacian matrix L, we parameterize spectral graph filters as the polynomial of L by spectral graph theory, in which Lk exactly encodes a k-hop local neighborhood of each vertex. Finally, the filter parameters (i.e., polynomial coefficients) as well as feature projecting functions are jointly integrated into the regression model. SFT can simply boil down to only a few line codes, but surprisingly it beats the correlation filter based model with the same feature input, and achieves the current best performance on the dataset [36] under the same feature extraction strategy (i.e., the existing VGG-Net model [32]). In this paper, we propose a novel tensor graph convolutional neural network (TGCNN) to conduct convolution on factorizable graphs, for which here two types of problems are focused, one is sequential dynamic graphs and the other is cross-attribute graphs. Especially, we propose a graph preserving layer to memorize salient nodes of those factorized subgraphs, i.e. cross graph convolution and graph pooling. For cross graph convolution, a parameterized Kronecker sum operation is proposed to generate a conjunctive adjacency matrix characterizing the relationship between every pair of nodes across two subgraphs. Taking this operation, then general graph convolution may be efficiently performed followed by the composition of small matrices, which thus reduces high memory and computational burden. Encapsuling sequence graphs into a recursive learning, the dynamics of graphs can be efficiently encoded as well as the spatial layout of graphs. To validate the proposed TGCNN, experiments are conducted on skeleton action datasets as well as matrix completion dataset. The experiment results demonstrate that our method can achieve more competitive performance with the state-of-the-art methods. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.
