Mobile push notifications are an important feature of mobile computing services and it has been widely implemented in mobile systems. However, it also brings vulnerability to the systems on security and reliability. Formal specification and verification is an effective approach for understanding the properties of mobile push notifications and ensuring quality of the system development. Due to the dynamic interaction among multiple systems, security and mobility in mobile computing services, formally modeling and analyzing this type of services is a grand challenge. In this paper, we proposed an approach that models mobile computing services using a high level Petri nets and analyzes them through combining formal verification and testing tech.iques. The effectiveness of the approach has been demonstrated with case study of a mobile searching service with mobile push notifications built on Amazon simple notification service and Google mobile push notification services.

Location privacy preservation has become an important issue in providing location based services (LBSs). When the mobile users report their locations to the LBS server or the third-party servers, they risk the leak of their location information if such servers are compromised. To address this issue, we propose a Location Privacy Preservation Scheme (LPPS) based on distributed cache pushing which is based on Markov Chain. The LPPS deploys distributed cache proxies in the most frequently visited areas to store the most popular location-related data and pushes them to mobile users passing by. In the way that the mobile users receive the popular location-related data from the cache proxies without reporting their real locations, the users' location privacy is well preserved, which is shown to achieve k-anonymity. Extensive experiments illustrate that the proposed LPPS achieve decent service coverage ratio and cache hit ratio with low communication overhead.

3D-NoC emerges as a potential multi-core architecture delivering high performance, high energy efficiency and great scalability. However, severe thermal challenges due to high power density continue to be a major hurdle in the development of 3D-NoC. In this paper, we propose a novel thermal-aware task scheduling scheme named Bottom-to-Top (B2T) approach to address this challenge. Incorporating communication overhead into analysis based on task graph, this heuristic-based method judiciously performs task allocation on processing units to efficiently minimize the peak temperature and improve the execution time of the applications. Our simulation results demonstrate that our scheme can achieve significant peak temperature reduction (up to 7.95°C) and performance improvement (up to 4%) when compared to other methods.

As spectral clustering has become increasingly popular in recent years, further research on it is very important. Due to the important role of discretization in data mining, a new clustering approach integrating discretization with density-sensitive spectral clustering namely density-sensitive spectral clustering of categorized data (DSSCCAT) is proposed. To alleviate the high computational complexity of DSSCCAT, two-phase spectral clustering (TPSC) algorithm is proposed, which involves two phases: construct the representatives of the original dataset and cluster the representatives with DSSCCAT. Experimental results on UCI datasets show the feasibility of combining discretization with density-sensitive spectral clustering. TPSC can obtain desirable clusters with high performance. Furthermore, TPSC outperforms DSSCCAT obviously in terms of computational time. © 2013 IEEE.

A simulation training system of multi-effect seawater desalination is helpful for research and training. A method of organizing the virtual space and models into a hierarchy tree was proposed, according to their topology relationship. The simulation model of seawater desalination plant was given, and the PID control system was designed. According to different kinds of operation modes, the meaning of gestures in different scene context was analyzed. A context-sensitive fast algorithm was proposed to accelerate the collision detection. A simulation training system of multi-effect seawater desalination is successfully realized and applied in worker's training. © (2013) Trans tech.Publications, Switzerland.

Energy disaggregation is to discover the energy consumption of individual appliances from their aggregated energy values. To solve the problem, most existing approaches rely on either appliances' signatures or their state transition patterns, both hard to obtain in practice. Aiming at developing a simple, universal model that works without depending on sophisticated machine learning tech.iques or auxiliary equipments, we make use of easily accessible knowledge of appliances and the sparsity of the switching events to design a Sparse Switching Event Recovering (SSER) method. By minimizing the total variation (TV) of the (sparse) event matrix, SSER can effectively recover the individual energy consumption values from the aggregated ones. To speed up the process, a Parallel Local Optimization Algorithm (PLOA) is proposed to solve the problem in active epochs of appliance activities in parallel. Using real-world trace data, we compare the performance of our method with that of the state-of-the-art solutions, including the popular Least Square Estimation (LSE) methods and a recently-developed machine learning method using iterative Hidden Markov Model (HMM). The results show that our approach has an overall better performance in both detection accuracy and overhead.

Time-varying path optimization is found in a variety of applications, e.g., traffic navigation, dynamic traffic assignment, and network control. The optimal vehicle route based on the time-dependent traffic network depends not only on the road congestion level, but also on the departure time. Based on the statistical characteristics of the urban traffic flow, a time-varying road network model is created. The paper investigate the time-varying routing optimization under three scenarios including: departure time is given, arrival time is given, and allowable time range is given. Simulations on the urban road network platform demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithms.

Topic-based publish/subscribe (pub/sub) is a popular paradigm to decouple message producers and consumers with the help of brokers. However, third-party brokers may be hacked, sniffed, subpoenaed, or impersonated. Thus, the brokers cannot be trusted. In particular, the collusion attack between compromised subscribers and untrusted brokers easily exposes the privacy of honest subscribers. Given the untrusted brokers and collusion attacks, traditional security tech.iques alone cannot protect subscribers' privacy. By adopting the k-anonymity model to the topic-based pub/sub, we propose to use cloaked subscriptions to blur subscribers' real interests. Such cloaked could protect the subscription privacy but meanwhile incur high forwarding cost. Thus, we minimize the forwarding cost meanwhile satisfying the privacy requirement, and formulate an integer programming (IP)-based optimization problem. After relaxing the IP problem to a linear programming (LP) problem, we design a new rounding algorithm that optimally minimizes the expected forwarding cost. The experiments show that our scheme efficiently achieves the trade-off between the forwarding cost and the privacy requirement. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

Chemical composition and its origin in spring rainwater over Taihu Lake

Chemical compositions of rainwater collected in three stations in Taihu Lake in Jiangsu Province, China between March and May 2003 were analyzed through numerical simulations and field observation data. In terms of average ion deposition rate in spring at the air/water interface, of all anions, that of SO 4 2− was the largest followed by NO 3 − , whereas among all cations, Ca2+ concentration and the rate was the largest, and then NH 4 + was the next. The correlation of ion concentration indicated that the catchment of the lake has been artificially polluted considerably. Using backward trajectory analysis, the raining water in the stations in Taihu Lake was classified. In spring, marine-originated rain is the main contribution to this area, counting for 92.7% of the total precipitation, in which SO 4 2− , NO 3 − and NH 4 − contributed 89.2%, 88.1%, and 88.3% respectively to the total spring-rain chemicals, whereas land-originated rains contributed in a small amount. However, the ion concentration in the land-originated rain was higher and acidic, causing considerable harm to local ecosystem. The analysis of backward trajectory analysis shows that three types of air masses influenced the chemical composition of the lake water, namely, air mass from NE direction, air mass from SW direction, and local air mass. Although the local air masses often produced small rainfall amount, but the nature of high ion concentration and high acidity impacted the local ecosystem rmmarkably. The ion concentration and rainfall from long-distance boreal air mass are clearly greater than those in austral air.

This paper addresses the problem of H ∞ almost synchronization” for networks of identical, linear agents under directed communication topologies. Agents are presumed to be non-introspective; i.e. agents are not aware of their own state or output, and every agent is only provided with a linear combination of its own output relative to that of the neighbors. Providing the solvability conditions, a family of dynamic protocols is developed such that the impact of disturbances on the synchronization error dynamics, expressed in terms of the H ∞ norm of the corresponding closed-loop transfer function, is reduced to any arbitrarily small value. Thus, synchronization with any desired accuracy can be achieved.
