Recent advances in flash memory show great potential to replace traditional hard drives (HDDs) with flash-based solid state drives (SSDs) from personal computing to distributed systems. However, it is still a long way to go before completely using SSDs for enterprise data storage. Considering the cost, performance, and reliability of SSDs, a practical solution is to combine both SSDs and HDDs together. This paper proposes a hybrid storage system named PASS (Performance-dAta Synchronization - hybrid storage System) to tradeoff between I/O performance and data discrepancy between SSDs and HDDs. PASS includes a high-performance SSD and a traditional HDD to store mirrored data for reliability. All of the I/O requests are redirected to the primary SSD first and then the updated data blocks are copied to the backup HDD asynchronously. In order to hide the latency of copying operations, we use an I/O window to coalesce write requests and maintain an ordered I/O queue to shorten the HDD seek and rotation times. Depending on the charateristics of different I/O workloads, we develop an adaptive policy to dynamically balance the foreground I/O processing and background mirroring. We implement a prototype system of PASS by developing a Linux device driver and conduct experiments on the IoMeter, PostMark, and TPCC benchmarks. Our results show that PASS can achieve up to 12 times the performance of a RAID1 storage system for the IoMeter and PostMark workloads while tolerating less than 2% data discrepancy between the primary SSD and the backup HDD. More interestingly, while PASS does not produce any performance benefit for the TPC-C benchmark, it does allow the system to scale to larger sizes than when using an HDD-based RAID system alone. © 2012 IEEE.

Personal recommendation based on bipartite network has gained sustained attention in recent years due to its performance outperforms the traditional collaborative filtering approach, and it is rapidly becoming an important and promising tech.ology for constructing recommender systems. Current viewpoint is focusing on improving precision of the algorithm. In this paper, we present an improved network-based inference(INB I) personal recommendation algorithm which combines weighted bipartite network with a tunable parameter to depress high-degree nodes and sets the value equals to 0.8. Using the practical data set obtained from GroupLens website to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, we performed a series of experiments. The experimental results reveal that it can yield better recommendation accuracy and has higher hitting rate than collaborative filtering(CF), network-based inference(NBI) and weighted network-based inference(NBIvv). © 2012 IEEE.

Reversible computing dissipates zero energy in terms of information loss at input and also it can detect error of circuit by keeping unique input-output mapping. In this paper, we have proposed a cost effective design of Reversible Programmable Logic Arrays (RPLAs) which is able to realize multi-output ESOP (Exclusive-OR Sum-Of-Product) functions by using a cost effective 3×3 reversible gate, called MG (MUX Gate). Also a new algorithm has been proposed for the calculation of critical path delay of reversible PLAs. The minimization processes consist of algorithms for ordering of output functions followed by the ordering of products. Five lower bounds on the numbers of gates, garbages and quantum costs of reversible PLAs are also proposed. Finally, we have compared the efficiency of proposed design with the existing one by providing benchmark functions analysis. The experimental results show that the proposed design outperforms the existing one in terms of numbers of gates, garbages, quantum costs and delay. Copyright 2012 ACM.

A new kernel based unsupervised clustering algorithm has been proposed. The proposed algorithm is called unsupervised kernel possibilistic clustering algorithm(UKPC), which is an extension of the previously proposed clustering algorithm of unsupervised possibilistic clustering algorithm(UPC). In UKPC, the sample points are mapped into the feature space by the introduced kernel function, and the final clustering partition is obtained by optimizing the objective function of UKPC, which adopts the same clustering rule with UPC clustering model. UKPC has the ability of revealing the non-convex cluster structure because the input data are mapped implicitly into a high-dimensional feature space where the nonlinear pattern now appears linear. The contrast experimental results with UPC and other typical fuzzy clustering algorithms show the better performance of the proposed algorithm.

Recently the Effective Capacity of multi-user wireless scheduling has been analyzed based on large deviation principle. The users' queue length distribution bound of wireless scheduling algorithm such as round robin and rate maximum was discussed based on Effective Capacity analysis. But for Queue Length Based (QLB) Rate Maximum scheduling algorithm, the analysis result is only limited to system bound performance and not for each user's bound performance. In this paper we consider each user's amount of input traffic and channel statistical characteristics and introduce a new Effective Capacity analysis model for QLB scheduling algorithm. The queue length distribution bound of the QLB scheduling algorithm for each user is then predicted by the proposed analysis model. Based on the predicted queue length distribution bound, we can set different queue length threshold, that is, delay constraint (queue length can be translated to delay) for each user to obtain different queue length violation (or delay constraint violation or queue overflow) probability. Then the effect of each user's amount of input traffic to their queue length (or delay constraint) violation probability in multiuser environment is analyzed. The proposed analysis model and the estimation results have been verified by numerical simulations. © 2012 IEEE.

The experience showed that the predicted delay's accuracy was improved when the nodes were chosen around the given delay as anchors. Thus a distance range-aware IP network coordinate system(R-Vivaldi) was proposed. The main idea was: according to the approximate range of the predicted delay, the anchors were re-selected in the radius area of the approximate range to compute the new range. In accordance with the above process, the coordinate system constantly iterated the network distance and dynamically chose anchors until the prediction accuracy meet the requirement. Experiments show that the approach can not only effectively improve the prediction accuracy of delay but also overcome inconsistencies of the prediction accuracy to a certain extent.

Mobile robot road image edge detection plays an important role in improving the accuracy of identification for roads image. Taking into account the real-time requirement for visual navigation of mobile robots, the early visual segmentation method based on mathematical morphology was studied in this work. An edge detection algorithm based on cellular neural networks for processing road images was proposed. The proposed algorithm can eliminate the influence of salt and pepper noises and cracks on the edge detection of road images, segment the road region and extract the road edges quickly and accurately. Therefore, it paves the way for follow-up mobile robot visual navigation. © 2012 Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l. - All right reserved.

A novel cooperative transmission protocol is proposed for multiple access scenarios, where multiple users communicate with a common destination with the assistant of multiple half-duplex relays. The proposed alternative relaying decode-and-forward (ARDF) protocol can achieve the full diversity gain by applying superposition coding at each transmitter, which also utilizes the linear zero-forcing detection at each relay to combat a serious inter-relay interference. Different to the previous uplink protocols, the proposed protocol can exploit the cooperation involving both the relays and sources, which guarantees the proposed scheme to approach the optimal multiple-input single-output upper bound even with general inter-relay interference. Analytical and numerical results have been provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed protocol.

A simulation training system of multi-effect seawater desalination is helpful for research and training. A method of organizing the virtual space and models into a hierarchy tree was proposed, according to their topology relationship. The simulation model of seawater desalination plant was given, and the PID control system was designed. According to different kinds of operation modes, the meaning of gestures in different scene context was analyzed. A context-sensitive fast algorithm was proposed to accelerate the collision detection. A simulation training system of multi-effect seawater desalination is successfully realized and applied in worker's training.

Medical treatment decision making is a good application of knowledge representation and reasoning. We are particularly interested in using them to resolve treatment conflicts, a complicated condition when two treatments cannot be given simultaneously to a patient suffering from multiple symptoms. The logic system is required to reason on cases with and without treatment conflicts. Thanks to the nonmonotonicity of Answer Set Programming (ASP), we give an elegant solution for resolving a medical treatment conflict on an example problem and show the importance of nonmonotonicity in medical reasoning.
