MEFA-Net: A mask enhanced feature aggregation network for polyp segmentation

Accurate polyp segmentation is crucial for early diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer. This is a challenging task for three main reasons: (i) the problem of model overfitting and weak generalization due to the multi-center distribution of data;(ii) the problem of interclass ambiguity caused by motion blur and overexposure to endoscopic light;and (iii) the problem of intraclass inconsistency caused by the variety of morphologies and sizes of the same type of polyps. To address these challenges, we propose a new high-precision polyp segmentation framework, MEFA-Net, which consists of three modules, including the plug-and-play Mask Enhancement Module (MEG), Separable Path Attention Enhancement Module (SPAE), and Dynamic Global Attention Pool Module (DGAP). Specifically, firstly, the MEG module regionally masks the high-energy regions of the environment and polyps through a mask, which guides the model to rely on only a small amount of information to distinguish between polyps and background features, avoiding the model from overfitting the environmental information, and improving the robustness of the model. At the same time, this module can effectively counteract the "dark corner phenomenon" in the dataset and further improve the generalization performance of the model. Next, the SPAE module can effectively alleviate the inter-class fuzzy problem by strengthening the feature expression. Then, the DGAP module solves the intra-class inconsistency problem by extracting the invariance of scale, shape and position. Finally, we propose a new evaluation metric, MultiColoScore, for comprehensively evaluating the segmentation performance of the model on five datasets with different domains. We evaluated the new method quantitatively and qualitatively on five datasets using four metrics. Experimental results show that MEFA-Net significantly improves the accuracy of polyp segmentation and outperforms current state-of-the-art algorithms. Code posted on https://***/

Water quality monitoring is critical for developing effective surface water management strategies, whereas data preprocessing is the foundation for monitoring water quality. Water quality monitoring usually suffers from abnormal and missing values in the collected data of surface water quality, and thus an efficient data imputation method for water quality data is highly desired. To handle these challenges, we propose an edge learning-based data imputation method. By using VAE as the generator of WGAN-LP, the performance of value imputation of water quality is generalized and improved. In addition, we demonstrate the performance of the proposed method on two real-world datasets, collected from Wuliangsu Lake and Taihu Lake in Inner Mongolia. With the development of the media industry, maximizing concurrency while ensuring the user’s viewing experience has become an important research topic for each major video website. Currently, one solution is to slice the video, which conserves server bandwidth. Therefore, the design of segment durations has been widely discussed in academia. The research shows that the longer the segment duration is, the better the user experience; however, the increase in video segment duration has a negative impact on the concurrency of the video website. In this paper, a variable length segmentation strategy based on user behaviour is proposed for video segmentation. In the early stage of video browsing, the video loading is ensured, and a short video segmentation strategy is adopted. When the number of users becomes stable, the segment duration is slowly increased to a fixed value to ensure fluency for the users watching the videos. In this paper, the JMeter test tool is used to test the concurrency volume. Through experimental verification, the variable length video segmentation algorithm proposed in this paper is shown to effectively improve the concurrency of the video websites.

As a popular representation learning framework, contrastive learning has been widely used in SAR image interpretation for feature extraction. Recent studies have shown that some features obtained by the model are related to the background information due to the spurious correlation of the backgrounds during the SAR data collection. As a result, the generalization ability of the representation learning model will be greatly affected by the background information and cannot satisfy the requirements of practical applications. This paper constructed a multi-branch dual contrastive learning model that simultaneously compares the similarities between objects and backgrounds of various images. The motivation is to alleviate the impact of the spurious correlation between background information and the object category. The experimental results and interpretable Shapley value demonstrated that the proposed method significantly improved the generalization performance of the SAR object classification algorithm. © 2023 IEEE.

Out-of-distribution (OOD) detection is crucial for developing trustworthy and reliable machine learning systems. Recent advances in training with auxiliary OOD data demonstrate efficacy in enhancing detection capabilities. Nonetheless, these methods heavily rely on acquiring a large pool of high-quality natural outliers. Some prior methods try to alleviate this problem by synthesizing virtual outliers but suffer from either poor quality or high cost due to the monotonous sampling strategy and the heavy-parameterized generative models. In this paper, we overcome all these problems by proposing the Hamiltonian Monte Carlo Outlier Synthesis (HamOS) framework, which views the synthesis process as sampling from Markov chains. Based solely on the in-distribution data, the Markov chains can extensively traverse the feature space and generate diverse and representative outliers, hence exposing the model to miscellaneous potential OOD scenarios. The Hamiltonian Monte Carlo with sampling acceptance rate almost close to 1 also makes our framework enjoy great efficiency. By empirically competing with SOTA baselines on both standard and large-scale benchmarks, we verify the efficacy and efficiency of our proposed HamOS. 2020 was an unprecedented year,with rapid and drastic changes in human mobility due to the COVID-19 *** understand the variation in commuting patterns among the Chinese population across stable and unstable periods,we used nationwide mobility data from 318 million mobile phone users in China to examine the extreme fluctuations of population movements in 2020,ranging from the Lunar New Year travel season(chunyun), to the exceptional calm of COVID-19 lockdown,and then to the recovery *** observed that cross-city movements,which increased substantially in chunyun and then dropped sharply during the lockdown,are primarily dependent on travel distance and the socio-economic development of *** the Lunar New Year holiday,national mobility remained low until mid-February,and COVID-19 interventions delayed more than 72.89 million people returning to large *** network analysis revealed clusters of highly connected cities,conforming to the social-economic division of urban agglomerations in *** the mass migration back to large cities was delayed,smaller cities connected more densely to form new *** the recovery period after travel restrictions were lifted,the netflows of over 55% city pairs reversed in direction compared to before the *** findings offer the most comprehensive picture of Chinese mobility at fine resolution across various scenarios in China and are of critical importance for decision making regarding future public-health-emergency response,transportation planning and regional economic development,among others.

Training machine learning (ML) models on mobile and Web-of-Things (WoT) has been widely acknowledged and employed as a promising solution to privacy-preserving ML. However, these end-devices often suffer from constrained resources and fail to accommodate increasingly large ML models that crave great computation power. Offloading ML models partially to the cloud for training strikes a trade-off between privacy preservation and resource requirements. However, device-cloud training creates communication overheads that delay model training tremendously. This paper presents EdgeMove, the first device-edge training scheme that enables fast pipelined model training across edge devices and edge servers. It employs probing-based mechanisms to tackle the new challenges raised by device-edge training. Before training begins, it probes nearby edge servers' training performance and bootstraps model training by constructing a training pipeline with an approximate model partitioning. During the training process, EdgeMove accommodates user mobility and system dynamics by probing nearby edge servers' training performance adaptively and adapting the training pipeline proactively. Extensive experiments are conducted with two popular DNN models trained on four datasets for three ML tasks. The results demonstrate that EdgeMove achieves a 1.3 × -2.1 × speedup over the state-of-the-art scheme. © 2023 ACM.

Transactional stream processing engines (TSPEs) have gained increasing attention due to their capability of processing real-time stream applications with transactional semantics. However, TSPEs remain susceptible to system failures and power outages. Existing TSPEs mainly focus on performance improvement, but still face a significant challenge to guarantee fault tolerance while offering high-performance services. We revisit commonly-used fault tolerance approaches in stream processing and database systems, and find that these approaches do not work well on TSPEs due to complex data dependencies. In this paper, we propose a novel TSPE called MorphStreamR to achieve fast failure recovery while guaranteeing low performance overhead at runtime. The key idea of MorphStreamR is to record intermediate results of resolved dependencies at runtime, and thus eliminate data dependencies to improve task parallelism during failure recovery. MorphStreamR further mitigates the runtime overhead by selectively tracking data dependencies and incorporating workload-aware log commitment. Experimental results show that MorphStreamR can significantly reduce the recovery time by up to 3.1 x while experiencing much less performance slowdown at runtime, compared with other applicable fault tolerance approaches.

In the past two decades, Piecewise Linear Approximation under maximum error (max-error) bound (PLA∞) has been intensively studied for effective qualified representation and analysis of time series data. It divides a time series into fragments and then represents each fragment with a straight line to approximate the data points of that time slot. In this paper, to elevate the representation quality in the optimal PLA∞ results, we present a linear-time algorithm FindMin to construct the unique line representative of minimized maximum error (min-max error) for each fragment. Through extended experimental tests, we demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is very efficient in execution and achieves better performances than the state-of-the-art solutions. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
