3D information access space based on multifacet database visualization

In order to access target information while getting an overview of the entirety of a large-scale database, a search must be carried out in parallel with various modifications to the frame of reference and dynamic organization of the information. In this research, this type of database search is realized through an information access space dynamically constructed of hyperlinks based on an arbitrary frame of reference. The authors propose a new concept and structure for the frames of reference and develop a mechanism for dynamically linking individual database records with multiple information access spaces, dynamically constructed on the basis of declarative definitions of these frames of reference. The authors also provide a three-dimensional interface for editing frames of reference and for spatial navigation threaded by these links. These operations correspond to query processing by narrowing down the subject tables and joining multiple tables;the user can gradually narrow his focus and arrive at the target information by dynamically modifying his frame of reference and repeating spatial movements. In this paper, a three-dimensional interface is developed and database searches using that interface are evaluated;it is shown that this technique makes it possible to quickly access target information. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Recent years have seen a large number of proposals for anonymity mechanisms operating on the application layer. Given that anonymity is no stronger than its weakest link, such proposals are only meaningful if one can offer anonymity guarantees on the communication layer as well. ANODR - or anonymous on demand routing - is one of the leading proposals to deal with this issue. In this paper, we propose a novel technique to address the same problem, but at a lower cost. Our proposal, which we dub discount-ANODR, is built around the same set of techniques as ANODR is. Our proposal has the benefit of achieving substantially lower computation and communication complexities at the cost of a slight reduction of privacy guarantees. In particular, discount-ANODR achieves source anonymity and routing privacy. A route is "blindly generated" by the intermediaries on the path between an anonymous source and an identified destination. Route requests in discount-ANODR bear strong similarities to route requests in existing source routing protocols, with the limitation that intermediaries only know the destination of the request and the identity of the previous intermediary - but not whether the latter was the originator of the request. The response to a route request protects the compiled route by means of iterated symmetric encryption, drawing on how messages are prepared before being submitted to a typical synchronous mix network (or onion router). The communication of data subsequently uses such "route onions" to channel the packet to the intended destination. We do not use any key exchange, nor do we utilize public key operations at any time; consequently, we do not need to rely on any PKI, CRL or related constructions

High-throughput generation of new types of relational biological datasets is creating a demand for network-based signal processing and pattern recognition to provide new insights. Such networks are often too large to interpret visually and too complicated to be explained solely based on local topological properties. Just as signal processing and statistical techniques have been used in traditional, sequential-based biological datasets, so too are methodologies needed to automatically discern patterns in the huge, emerging networks. One way to do this is by transforming these very large networks into discernable epitomes, or abstracts, of the original networks. This work presents an approach for doing this via topological compression. Through capturing nodes' global topologies and subsequent compression, a new network epitome can be derived. Here, this is done with an E. Coli gene regulation network, resulting in biological findings that could not be derived from the local topology of the original network.

In this paper, we investigate the properties of lethal genes in E. coli, our model organism. Topological analysis of networks of functional interactions among genes has shown that lethal genes share common local connectivity properties. In this paper, we analyze cellular networks across three domains. We show that a stochastic global topological analysis, via random walks, is more effective at predicting gene lethality than simply looking at local topology using the standard hub-based method. We also introduce the possibility of using metabolic pathways to understand lethal genes, as regulating these pathways is among one of the most important functions of the gene-encoded proteins. Additionally, we analyze lethal genes in terms of the Gene Ontology (GO) and find that the graph forms two highly connected clusters that are each GO enriched for specific terms. We also find that lethal metabolic regulators are extremely enriched. Finally, we provide applications of the work and avenues for future research.

In order to support multimedia communication, it is necessary to develop routing algorithms which use for routing more than one QoS parameters. This is because new services such as video on demand and remote meeting systems require better QoS. Also, for admission control of multimedia applications different QoS parameters should be considered. In our previous work, we proposed an intelligent routing and CAC strategy using cooperative agents. The proposed routing algorithm is a combination of source and distributed routing. However, in the previous research, we only considered the time delay for the routing. Also, QoS and congestion control parameters were considered just as indicators of QoS satisfication and congestion. In this work, we extend our previous work by proposing and implementing new algorithms based on fuzzy logic and genetic algorithm which use for admission control and routing many QoS parameters. Also, we evaluate by simulations the performance of the network extraction topology algorithm which reduces the search space of the proposed GA-based routing approach. Thus, the GA can find a feasible route very fast.

Recently, large-scale protein-protein interactions were recovered using the similar two-hybrid system for the model systems. This information allows us to investigate the protein interaction network from a systematic point of view. However, experimentally determined interactions are susceptible to errors. A previous assessment estimated that only ~10% of the interactions can be supported by more than one independent experiment, and about half of the interactions may be false positives. These false positives might unnecessarily link unrelated proteins, resulting in huge apparent interaction clusters, which complicate elucidation for the biological importance of these interactions. Address this problem, we present an approach to integrate, assess and characterize all available protein-protein interactions in model organisms yeast and fly. We first integrate all available protein-protein interaction databases of yeast and fly, and merge all the datasets. We then use machine learning techniques to score the reliability for each interaction, and to rigorously validate the scoring scheme of yeast protein-protein interactions from different aspects. Our results show that this scoring scheme provides a good basis for selecting reliable protein-protein interaction dataset

A useful learning system for human motion characters of traditional arts, such as Mai (Japanese classic dance), Kabuki (one of Japan's traditional stage arts), etc., is being developed. In such arts an effective system to pass the tradition down from a top artist to next generations is required. Video contents are generally used to pass the human motions in traditional arts down for non-experts. However, the video contents normally show the human motions as the views from a single direction. If the human motions are presented from orthogonal three-directions at the same time, it comes more useful. So, our learning system produces the three-dimensional human motion by the sequences of views from a single direction in the video contents, then, the motions from any directions can be presented simultaneously with the video *** addition, a learner can check the difference in motion between a top artist and him/herself by the producing his/her three-dimensional skeleton motion with our system and the overlapping it with one of the top artist. Here, in the comparison between two different physiques (a top artist and a learner) a simple adjustment method is *** our study standard motion capture processes are employed, but our goal is to develop an original practical training system of performers' motion for beginners in traditional arts. In this paper the developing system is demonstrated for Kyo-mai (Mai originated in Kyoto) as example. The developing system can be useful not only in performing arts but also in industry or in sports. Copyright 2006 ACM.

This paper presents an efficient fuzzy cognitive modeling which can handle granulation, organisation and causation. This cognitive modeling technique consists of multiple levels where the lowest level includes details required to make a decision or to transfer to the next stage. This fuzzy cognitive modeling will enhance the usability of fuzzy theory in modeling complex systems as well as facilitating complex decision making process based on ill structured or missing information or data.

National institute of Information and Communications technology of Japan (NICT) completed a project on new-generation mobile communications networks for beyond 3G or 4G in March 2006. This paper presents our vision of new-generation mobile communications networks from networking perspective and their capabilities to be offered: fast and large-capacity handover, cross-network handover, cross-device handover, and interworking between real and cyber worlds. Then, Metro Mobile Ring network technology for the first capability, MIRAI architecture for the second and third capabilities, and other works are presented.
