This paper tackles the problem of assembling a jigsaw puzzle, starting only from a picture of the scrambled jigsaw puzzle pieces on a random, textured background. This manuscript discusses previous approaches in dealing with the jigsaw puzzle problem and brings two contributions: an open source tool for creating realistic scrambled jigsaw puzzles meant to serve as a foundation for further research in the field;and an end to end AI based solution taking advantage of the convolutional neural network architecture, capable of solving a scrambled jigsaw puzzle of unknown pictorial and with an unknown, uniformly textured, background. The lessons and techniques learned in engaging with the jigsaw puzzle problem can be further used in approaching the more general and complex problem of Protein-Protein interaction prediction. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Quantum computations cause problems for classical systems. The perfect examples are effective quantum algorithms, which are causing problems for the most popular cryptosystems. These systems are considered safe for classical computers. Despite on releasing quantum computers all sensitive information should stay safe. This information should be encrypted in such way that will withstand quantum computers' attacks. Classical cryptography consists of problems and instruments: encryption, key distribution, digital signatures, pseudo-random number generator and one-way functions. For example, "RSA" is safe only when factorization is hard for classical computer, but quantum computers can easily solve this problem. Hash-based signature systems provide interesting alternatives. Hash-based signatures systems use cryptographically secure hash functions. Their security is based on the security of the concrete hash function. Using secure hash function is the minimal requirement for safe digital signature's system, which can be used for signing many documents using one secret key. In the article we provide the improved hash based digital signature scheme. The scheme uses the secure pseudo random number generator. As the seed for this pseudo random number generator it uses the truly random number received using attenuated pulse quantum generator. Lightweight and Dual-Peak H-Pattern Metamaterial Absorber Based on Discontinuous Dielectric Media in the L-Band Range

An novel lightweight and dual-peak metamaterial absorber based on discontinuous media has been designed and demonstrated in the L-band (1 - 2 GHz). It is composed of three layers from top to bottom: patterned metal film, discontinuous dielectric substrate and complete metal film. Compared with continuous media absorbers, the weight of the designed metamaterial absorber based on discontinuous media is reduced by 42.58%. The dual-peak reflection losses of -17.29 dB and -15.99 dB are attained at 1.23 GHz and 1.72 GHz, respectively. Surface current, electromagnetic field and power loss density are employed to illustrate the physical attenuation mechanisms. The dual-peak absorptive performance could be easily varied by changing the key geometric parameters. Our work provides a new approach to construct a lightweight and dual-peak metamaterial absorber in the L-band range. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Viral membrane proteins (VMPs) are essential viral components located on the surface of enveloped viruses, playing a critical role during the viral infection of host cells. Based on their structural characteristics, membrane localization, and functional properties, VMPs can be categorized into lipid anchor chains, multichannel membrane proteins, peripheral membrane proteins, and single-channel proteins. These classifications directly correlate with their biological functions. Therefore, accurately identifying and analyzing the functional types of VMPs is crucial for advancing antiviral drug discovery and vaccine development. In this study, we developed a multiclass machine learning (ML) model to classify VMPs types based on sequence-derived information. The proposed approach integrated compositional and physicochemical features with a transformer-based multi-layer perceptron (MLP) model. Its performance was benchmarked against conventional ML classifiers, including support vector machines (SVM), decision trees (DT), random forests (RF), and naive bayes (NB). Our transformer-based MLP model significantly outperformed these baseline classifiers, achieving an overall area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.94 and an overall area under the precision-recall curve (AUPRC) of 0.89. These promising results highlight the effectiveness of transformer architectures in classifying VMPs by capturing subtle yet critical feature relationships necessary for accurate predictions. Ultimately, our findings contribute valuable insights toward antiviral drug development and effective disease-control strategies.

In order to make it more flexible and comprehensive as suggested by many users, the updated package has incorporated 23 new pseudo component modes as well as a series of new feature analysis approaches. Moreover, to maximize the convenience of users, provided is also the stand-alone version called “Pse-in-One-Analysis”, by which users can significantly speed up the analysis of massive sequences.

A Computational Approach for Identifying Quranic Themes

In this paper, we present a simple mining technique named the Quran Mining Technique (QMT) in an attempt to automatically classify the Suras (i.e. chapters) of the Quran based on predefined set of 10 themes. QMT is composed mainly of two phases: a preprocessing phase and a classification phase. In the first phase, we manually label a set of representative words for ten predefined themes. In the second phase we use the QMT on a set of 14 Suras (the total number of Suras is 30) using a scoring function (SF) to identify their themes. The results of QMT are compared with the results obtained from expert scholars in the field of Quranic studies, which we used as a benchmark. The average accuracy of the QMT classifier shows a result close to 79%.

Service-oriented computing (SOC) is a promising paradigm for developing enterprise software systems. The initial concepts of service-orientation have been described in the research and industry literature and software tools for assisting in the development of service-oriented (SO) applications are becoming more widely used. Nonetheless, a precise description of what constitutes a SO system is yet to be formally defined, and the design principles of SOC are not well understood. Therefore, this paper proposes a formal mathematical model covering design artefacts in service-oriented systems and their structural and behavioural properties. This model promotes a better understanding of SO concepts, and in particular, enables the definition of structural software metrics in an unambiguous, formal manner. Finally, although the proposed model is generic, it can be customised to support particular technologies as shown in this paper where the model was tailored for BPEL4WS implementation.

The paper proposes a Clustered Dynamic Source Routing (CDSR) protocol based on the hierarchical topological infrastructure in view of the lack of extension of flat unicast routing protocols in large-scale Ad Hoc networks. CDSR protocol adopts the advantages of on demand and source routing in DSR (Dynamic Source Routing), and introduces Enhanced Weighted Clustering Algorithm (EWCA) to assure the stable hierarchical topological structure to manage hierarchically network hosts. The simulation experiment proves the protocol has the advantages of low delay, high delivery ratio and good extension, and proves the protocol better suitable for large scale Ad hoc networks.

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a promising approach for developing enterprise applications. While the concept of SOA has been described in research and industry literature, the techniques for determining optimal granularity of services and encapsulating business logic in software are unclear. This paper explores this problem using a case study developed with two contrasting approaches to building enterprise applications that utilise services, where one of the approaches employs coarse-grained services developed based on the principles of Object-Orientation (OO), and another approach is based on embedding business rules and logic into executable BPEL scripts and constructing a system as a set of fine-grained services. The quantitative comparison based on a set of mature software engineering metrics showed that a system developed using the BPEL-based approach has a potentially higher structural complexity, but at the same time lower coupling between software modules compared to an OO approach. It was also shown that some of the existing software metrics are inapplicable to SOA, hence new metrics need to be developed.

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a promising approach for developing integrated enterprise applications. Although the architectural aspects of SOA have been investigated in research and industry literature, the actual process of designing and implementing services in SOA is not well understood. The goal of this paper is to identify tasks needed for successful design and implementation of services, and investigate their effect on the project and structural software attributes in the context of SOA. This facilitates the specification of guidelines for decreasing the required development effort and capital cost of the SOA projects, and improving the structural software attributes of service implementations. The tasks are identified in the context of top-down, bottom-up and meet-in-the-middle software development strategies.
