Active modeling is required in learning settings to cope with the dynamic evolution of the knowledge, since learners competences evolves over time as they participate in the course activities. Moreover, one of the main issues in a competence based eLearning process is to deliver personalized instructional designs adjusted to both 1) intrinsic characteristics of users (i.e. learning styles) and 2) the desired and achieved competences in the learning process (i.e. specific and generic competences). This delivery includes the adaptation of the content and the activities in a learning scenario based on a dynamic user model that evolves according to user interactions. With the increase of welfare cost all over the developed world, there is a need to resort to new technologies that could help reduce this enormous cost and provide some quality eldercare services. This paper presents a middleware-level solution that integrates monitoring and emergency detection solutions with networking solutions. The proposed system enables efficient integration between a variety of sensors and actuators de?ployed at home for emergency detection and provides a framework for creating and managing rescue teams willing to assist elders in case of emergency situations. A prototype of the proposed system was designed and implemented. Results were obtained from both computer simulations and a real-network testbed.

Efficient rendering of complex scenes has receive great attention in real-time computer graphics. Current researches are mostly concentrated on reducing the geometric complexity of the scene model such as reconstructing an LOD representation, performing visibility culling etc. However, the rendering process of complex scenes involves not only the geometric information of each object, but also multiple attributes, including lighting, material, texture, etc. The invocation of each attribute corresponds to a specific state in the rendering pipeline, frequent transfer between different states in the pipeline will introduce large amount of overhead, hence reducing the rendering efficiency. A rendering method accounting for efficient invocation of multiple attributes of objects based on state transition optimization strategies is presented. It estimates the cost for invoking each attribute of objects in the rendering pipeline and expresses the transitions between various render states as a weighted directed graph. Then the optimized sequence of state transition is obtained by optimization. Experimental results show that our proposed method can effectively reduce the overhead of state transition and improve the rendering efficiency of scenes containing large amounts of multi-attribute objects.
