For an odd prime p, n=4k, and d=((p 2k +1)/2) 2 , there are (p 2k +1)/ 2 distinct decimated sequences s(dt+l), 0lesl2k+1)/2, of a p-ary m-sequence s(t) of period p n -1 because gcd(d,p n -1)=(p 2k +1)/2. In this paper, it is shown that the cross-correlation function between s(t) and s(dt+I), 0lesl< (p 2k +1)/2, takes the values in {-1, -1 - radicp n , -1+radicp n -1+2radicp n } and their cross-correlation distribution is also derived.

The paper develops an adaptive particle swarm optimization(PSO) based on its simplification. With the hope to prompt its global optimization performance, the improved menthod introduces a PD controller into the architecture of the standard PSO(SPSO-PD). The PD controller can control the particle dynamics, and prompt the particles to respond to the change of their exemplars correctly and rapidly, further to surpass the limit of their exemplars with more chances, which greatly contributes to a successful global search. The proposed SPSO-PD was applied to some well-known benchmarks and compared with the standard PSO. The relative experimental results show SPSO-PD performs better than SPSO on the complex optimization functions.

We have reported the successful use of the Loop Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) reaction for Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) DNA in a 25 μl micro-reactor for the development of a rapid diagnostic device recently. This method shows the successful amplification of HBV DNA with high specificity and sensitivity efficiently within one hour. Such a powerful method can be used for many other fast diagnostic applications with the help of optimal primer design and miniaturization of reactor. In this report, we will first summarize the general design rules for primer design from literature reviews and our experimental results. We will discuss the effects of HBV primers and concentrations of working buffers for optimal performance. © 2007 National Taiwan University.

To improve the cycle life and efficiency of an energy storage system for HEV, a dynamic control system consisted of a switch between battery and ultracapacitor module and a controller is proposed, which is appropriate for mild hybrid vehicle with 42 V power net. The switch can be controlled based on the status of the battery and the ultracapacitor module, and a control algorithm that could largely decrease the number of high charging current peak is also implemented. Therefore the cycle life of the battery can be improved such that it is suitable for a mild hybrid vehicle with frequent engine start-stop and regenerative-braking. Also, by maximizing the use of the ultracapacitor, the system efficiency during high current charging and discharging operation is improved. Finally, this system has the effects that improves the efficiency of energy storage system and reduces the fuel consumption of a vehicle. To verify the validity of the proposed system, this paper presented cycles test results of different energy storage systems: a simple VRLA battery, hybrid energy pack (HEP, a VRLA battery in parallel with Ultracapacitor) and a HEP with a switch that controlled by energy management system (EMS). From the experimental result, it was proved the effectiveness of the algorithm.

He also wrote a book chapter devoted to integrating manufacturing design tools and edited a special issue of the International Journal of Computer Integrated Manufacturing dedicated to intelligent manufacturing systems. As typical discrete event systems, flexible manufacturing systems have been extensively studied in such aspects as modeling, control and performance analysis. One important topic in the study of such systems is the deadlock detection, prevention and avoidance. In the past decade, two major modeling formalisms, i.e., Petri nets and digraphs, have been adopted for developing deadlock control policies for flexible manufacturing systems. In this paper, the concepts of slack, knot, order and effective free space of circuits in the digraph are established and used to concisely and precisely quantify the sufficient conditions for a system state to be live. Necessary conditions for this liveness is quantified for a special class of system states - called evaluation states. The significance of the result is that the conditions are true for avoiding both primary deadlocks and impending deadlocks that are arbitrary steps away from a primary one, whereas only second level deadlocks have been studied in the literature. Examples are provided to illustrate the method.

this paper proposes a new method eliminating external effect from (load, temperature) variation on a Piezoelectric Transformer (PT) converter by utilizing the phase-locked loop (PLL) modulation technique. The PLL control scheme involves detecting phase difference between injected sinusoidal signal and demodulated terminal voltage of PT. Generally, frequency control method decreases the efficiency of PT in wide input range. And, duty cycle control method has a problem of insufficient operating range for the load variation. In other to overcome these problems, this paper introduces a two loop control (PWM and PLL) with PT which provides wide ZVS condition nearly independent of the load variation, and excellent line regulation for the universal input voltage and load range. The performance of the proposed control method is verified by experimental result with 40 [W] DC/DC converter hardware prototypes.

Tinnitus is the perception of phantom sounds in the ears or in the head. Sound therapy techniques for tinnitus have been proposed. To account for mechanisms of tinnitus generation and the clinical effects of sound therapies from the viewpoint of neural engineering, we have proposed a plastic neural network model for the human auditory system. We found that this model has a bistable state, i.e., a stable oscillatory state and a stable equilibrium (non-oscillatory) state coexist at a certain parameter region. We also found that the oscillation can be inhibited by supplying sinusoidal stimulus, which is hypothesized as sound for treatment of tinnitus, to the model. By hypothesizing that the oscillation and the equilibrium correspond to generation and inhibition of tinnitus, respectively, we reported that these phenomena could explain the fact that the habituated human auditory system temporarily halts perception of tinnitus following sound therapy. This paper describes dynamical properties of the model and inhibition of the oscillation for two kinds of noise stimuli which correspond to sound for treatment of tinnitus in clinical. Through numerical simulations we found that adequate noise stimulus can inhibits the oscillation.

A metallic waveguide is one of effective media guiding a millimeter- and submillimeter-wave because of the advantage of low loss. In this paper, trial fabrication of a PTFE-filled rectangular waveguide for millimeter-wave components is attempted with the use of the SR direct etching process, sputter deposition of metal, and electroplating. The fabrication procedure for the PTFE-filled waveguide is described and the measured frequency characteristics of the PTFE-filled waveguide mitered bends are shown.
