In this paper, we propose a rate control mechanism for multimedia multicast streaming in the Internet. A single and optimal transmission rate that is adaptive to the network congestion, buffer occupancies, and the playback requirements of the member clients in the multicast group is allocated. We optimize the multicasting delivery in the Internet by improving the buffer occupancy of all clients for on-time presentation while using the minimal transmission rate. Scalable playback is used for the clients with low bandwidth capabilities in a heterogeneous environment. Simulation results show that the buffer capacity can be efficiently improved and fairness is ensured among the member clients.

In this paper, an end-to-end real-time adaptive protocol for multimedia transmission is presented. The transmission rate is determined by the quadratic probing algorithm that can obtain the maximal utilization of the client buffer and minimal allocation of the network bandwidth. It is also coupled with a congestion control mechanism that can effectively decrease the packet loss rate during network congestion. We investigate the performance of our quadratic probing algorithm in different congestion levels under both Local Area Net (LAN) and Internet environment. Performance analysis reveals that our approach is more robust in avoiding overflow and underflow in different network congestion levels, and adapting to the changing network delays. Comparisons are made with the fixed rate approach and the rate by playback requirement approach. Experimental results show that the proposed real time protocol with rate adjusting quadratic probing algorithm is efficient in utilizing the network resources and decreasing the packet loss ratios.

We present a mechanism called the Markov model mediator (MMM) to facilitate the effective retrieval for content-based image retrieval (CBIR). Different from the common methods in content-based image retrieval, our stochastic mechanism not only takes into consideration the low-level image content features, but also learns high-level concepts from a set of training data, such as access frequencies and access patterns of the images. The advantage of our proposed mechanism is that it exploits the structured description of visual contents as well as the relative affinity measurements among the images. Consequently, it provides the capability to bridge the gap between the low-level features and high-level concepts. Our experimental results demonstrate that the MMM mechanism can effectively assist in retrieving more accurate results for user queries.

In this paper, we propose a per-class queue management and adaptive packet drop mechanism in the routers for Internet congestion control. We model active queue management as an optimization problem and our proposed mechanism provides congestion control and fairness for different types of traffic flows. An optimal packet drop rate is obtained to maintain a relatively small queue occupancy, which provides a less queue delay delivery of packets. Simulations are conducted to compare our approach with the fixed packet drop rate approach. Moreover, the queue occupancy and the packet drop rates obtained are both upper bounded, which is meaningful for providing the class-based guaranteed delay services for real-time multimedia applications.

In this paper, we propose a method to estimate fault efficiency for path delay faults based on untestable path analysis. In path delay fault testing, fault coverage of test patterns is usually, very low, because logic circuits often have huge number of paths including many untestable paths. Hence we should compute fault efficiency rather than fault coverage, but it is too difficult to compute exact fault efficiency in a short time, because there is no method to compute total number of untestable paths quickly. The proposed method statistically estimate the number of untestable paths based on untestable path analysis, and compute fault efficiency. Experimental results show that the proposed method can accurately estimate fault efficiency of given test patterns in a reasonable time.

The mission system of an aircraft is a complex real-time distributed system consisting of a mission control computer, different kinds of devices interconnected by a number of serial data buses. The complexity and real-time requirements of mission systems have motivated research into the application of formal techniques to investigate and predict the effects of upgrades on mission system behaviour. We report on a joint research project between the University of South Australia and Australia's Defence science and Technology Organisation. In previous work we modelled a generic avionics mission system with coloured Petri nets and analysed the model using state spaces. Here, we describe how this model was refined and modified to obtain a coloured Petri net model for the AP-3C Orion maritime surveillance aircraft.

This paper presents a novel methodology for modelling and analyzing of behav-ior relations of concurrent systems. The set of all firing sequences of a Petri net is an importanttool for describing the dynamic behavior of concurrent systems. In this paper, the behaviorrelativity of two concurrent subsystems in their synchronous composition is presented. Such be-havior relativities, including Controlled Relativity, United Relativity, Interactive Relativity andExclusive Relativity, are defined respectively. The properties of the relativities are discussed indetail. The analysis method for these properties is based on minimum T-invariants, when twosubsystems are live bounded Petri nets. A well-known example has also been analyaed usingthe new methodology to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed methodology.
