Virtualization enables the service providers (SPs) to logically partition the resources into virtual machines (VM) instances. Real-world SPs such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft Azure, IBM, and Oracle provide different flavors of VM instances, such as on-demand, reserved, and low-cost or spot, depending on the type of application hosted. The on-demand instances are short-term and typically incur a higher cost than reserved instances that are provisioned for a longer duration at a discounted rate. Low-cost or spot instances are cost-effective compared to on-demand but are reclaimable by the SPs. The SPs often claim that the on-demand and spot instances achieve similar performance, but it is far from that. This paper studies the performance of spot instances via rigorous experimentation over commercial SPs such as Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure. Real-world evaluations affirm that spot instances perform poorly compared to their on-demand counterpart concerning memory, CPU, disk read, and write operations. We identify such instances as disruptive and name them so because it does not fulfill the performance, durability, and flexibility expectations like an on-demand instance having the same configuration. We also perform hypothesis testing over the experimental data obtained to corroborate our claim further. © 2024 IEEE.

Stacked autoencoder with weighted loss function for intrusion detection in IoT application

The fast increase of network traffic in recent times causes significant detection of intrusions in Internet of Things (IoT) environments. Currently, Deep Learning (DL) models play a crucial role in cyber security for malicious identification and intrusion detection in IoT networks. The existing methods have drawbacks like overfitting, data imbalance, and not completely capturing complex dependencies and relationships among input and features that are significant for intrusion detection. To overcome these limitations, Stacked Autoencoder (SAE) with weighted loss function is proposed for effective Intrusion Detection system (IDS). The SAE includes weighted loss function to minimize the overfitting issue and finally, the One Class-Support Vector Machine (OCSVM) is used in the classification layer to classify the intrusions. The database used for intrusion detection in IoT environment are Bot-IoT and ToN-IoT databases, which undergo pre-processing by using standard scalar and min–max normalization to remove duplicates and inconsistent data in the databases. Then, the optimal features are selected by using firefly optimizer which selects active features values for classification. In the resulting phase, the stacked autoencoder obtains 99.99%, and 99.70% of classification accuracy on the Bot-IoT and ToN-IoT databases, respectively, which are superior while compared to the traditional autoencoder model. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Image Enhancement via Associated Perturbation Removal and Texture Reconstruction Learning

Degradation under challenging conditions such as rain, haze, and low light not only diminishes content visibility, but also results in additional degradation side effects, including detail occlusion and color distortion. However, current technologies have barely explored the correlation between perturbation removal and background restoration, consequently struggling to generate high-naturalness content in challenging scenarios. In this paper, we rethink the image enhancement task from the perspective of joint optimization: Perturbation removal and texture reconstruction. To this end, we advise an efficient yet effective image enhancement model, termed the perturbation-guided texture reconstruction network(PerTeRNet). It contains two subnetworks designed for the perturbation elimination and texture reconstruction tasks, respectively. To facilitate texture recovery,we develop a novel perturbation-guided texture enhancement module(PerTEM) to connect these two tasks, where informative background features are extracted from the input with the guidance of predicted perturbation priors. To alleviate the learning burden and computational cost, we suggest performing perturbation removal in a sub-space and exploiting super-resolution to infer high-frequency background details. Our PerTeRNet has demonstrated significant superiority over typical methods in both quantitative and qualitative measures, as evidenced by extensive experimental results on popular image enhancement and joint detection tasks. Kidney disease (KD) is a gradually increasing global health concern. It is a chronic illness linked to higher rates of morbidity and mortality, a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and numerous other illnesses, and expensive medical expenses. The machine learning (ML) models are applied for KD prediction with higher accuracy and precision. The KD dataset has uncertainty and vague information, so, we used the neutrosophic set (NS) to deal with vague and uncertainty information in the KD dataset. The KD dataset is converted into the N-KD dataset with three membership functions: truth, indeterminacy, and falsity. Three ML models are used in this study such as logistic regression (LR), support vector machine (SVM), and k-nearest neighbor (KNN). These ML models are applied to the N-KD dataset. The results show the LR has higher accuracy and precision on the N-KD dataset than the original KD dataset. © 2025, University of New Mexico. All rights reserved.

Diluie: constructing diverse demonstrations of in-context learning with large language model for unified information extraction

Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated promising in-context learning capabilities, especially with instructive prompts. However, recent studies have shown that existing large models still face challenges in specific information extraction (IE) tasks. Moreover, it could have more effectively utilized various prompts such as instruction tuning, diverse demonstrations of in-context learning, and long-range token sequences for assisting language modeling in understanding context. In this study, we propose DILUIE, a unified information extraction framework based on in-context learning with diverse demonstration examples. DILUIE is encoded with an EVA attention mechanism and incremental encoding technology. Based on the constructed diverse demonstrations, we expand the size of instances efficiently in both instruction tuning and in-context learning to gain insights into the potential benefits of utilizing diverse information extraction datasets. To deepen the understanding of context, we further design three auxiliary tasks to assist in aligning contextual semantics. Experimental results demonstrate that DILUIE achieves 2.23 and 2.53% improvements in terms of Micor-/Macor-F1 on average relative to the current state-of-the-art baseline, which also significantly outperforms the GPT-3.5-turbo in zero-shot settings, and the average token length of achieving the best performance over tasks is around 15k. Furthermore, we observe that in-context learning shows enhanced performance when provided with more demonstrations during multiple-shot instruction tuning (8 k). Additionally, increasing the length of instructions (10 k) can result in a more substantial improvement in the upper limits of scaling for in-context learning. Two Stages Segmentation Algorithm of Breast Tumor in DCE-MRI Based on Multi-Scale Feature and Boundary Attention Mechanism
