In the realm of visual tasks, the estimation of orientation plays a pivotal role yet often remains an understudied aspect in the gamut of image analysis research. This paper endeavors to address this deficiency by conducting a comprehensive review of methods for orientation estimation within 2D imaging contexts. We aim to provide researchers with an exhaustive overview and detailed analysis of the techniques utilized for orientation estimation, thereby enhancing their understanding of this complex field. We introduce an organized classification of orientation estimation methods, segmented into approaches based on classification algorithms and those based on regression models. This classification not only sheds light on the distinct methodologies but also scrutinizes their underlying assumptions, practical applications. Additionally, the study identifies and underscores emerging research opportunities that hold the potential to enrich the discourse and technical advancements in orientation estimation, thereby encouraging deeper academic investigation and technological development.

Artificial intelligence (AI) like deep learning, cloud AI computation has been advancing at a rapid pace since 2014. There is no doubt that the prosperity of AI is inseparable with the development of the Internet. However, there has been little attention to the link between AI and the internet. This paper explores them with brain insights mainly from four views:1) How is the general relation between artificial intelligence and Internet of Things, cloud computing, big data and Industrial Internet from the perspective of brain science. 2) Construction of a new AI system model with the Internet and brain science.

Differential Evolution (DE) is a very simple but powerful Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) for real-world applications. There are two aspects affecting the overall optimization performance significantly, one is parameter control scheme and the other is trial vector generation strategy. As all the control parameters are employed in generating trial vectors, from this perspective of view, the trial vector generation strategy dominates the overall optimization performance. Therefore, trial vector generation strategies are often designed first, and then the corresponding parameter control schemes are well-tuned thereafter. Both of them constitute the main body of a new DE variant. Here in the paper, a novel DE variant with a new designed trial vector generation strategy as well as novel parameter control scheme is proposed to tackle freight trains scheduling problem. By incorporating both a time-stamp mechanism of the external archive and a novel parameter control scheme, the new algorithm can secure better optimization performance not only on man-made benchmarks but also on real-world applications. Both the man-made benchmarks from Congress on Evolutionary Computation (CEC) test suite and the real-world freight train scheduling problem are employed in the validation of the new DE variant. The experiment results show that it is competitive with other state-of-the-art DE techniques for these optimization problems.

Threshold and Deadline Effect in Crowdfunding

The deadline effect and threshold effect are common in product development and group buying. We consider these two effects also exist in crowdfunding, affecting the crowdfunding performance in the future. We conduct an empirical study using a dataset from *** to examine these two effects and their interactive relationship on the following crowdfunding performance. We find the threshold effect exists in crowdfunding and has a positive influence on the following contribution behaviour. The deadline effect also can stimulate the crowdfunding behaviour via limited fundraising time. Furthermore, we find the threshold effect and deadline effect are complements that increase the amount pledged.

Exploring the Privacy Protection Capabilities of Chinese Large Language Models

Large language models (LLMs), renowned for their impressive capabilities in various tasks, have significantly advanced artificial intelligence. Yet, these advancements have raised growing concerns about privacy and security implications. To address these issues and explain the risks inherent in these models, we have devised a three-tiered progressive framework tailored for evaluating privacy in language systems. This framework consists of progressively complex and in-depth privacy test tasks at each tier. Our primary objective is to comprehensively evaluate the sensitivity of large language models to private information, examining how effectively they discern, manage, and safeguard sensitive data in diverse scenarios. This systematic evaluation helps us understand the degree to which these models comply with privacy protection guidelines and the effectiveness of their inherent safeguards against privacy breaches. Our observations indicate that existing Chinese large language models universally show privacy protection shortcomings. It seems that at the moment this widespread issue is unavoidable and may pose corresponding privacy risks in applications based on these models. © 2024, CC BY.

A LLM-based Controllable, Scalable, Human-Involved User Simulator Framework for Conversational Recommender Systems

Conversational Recommender System (CRS) leverages real-time feedback from users to dynamically model their preferences, thereby enhancing the system’s ability to provide personalized recommendations and improving the overall user experience. CRS has demonstrated significant promise, prompting researchers to concentrate their efforts on developing user simulators that are both more realistic and trustworthy. The emergence of Large Language Models (LLMs) has marked the onset of a new epoch in computational capabilities, exhibiting human-level intelligence in various tasks. Research efforts have been made to utilize LLMs for building user simulators to evaluate the performance of CRS. Although these efforts showcase innovation, they are accompanied by certain limitations. In this work, we introduce a Controllable, Scalable, and Human-Involved (CSHI) simulator framework that manages the behavior of user simulators across various stages via a plugin manager. CSHI customizes the simulation of user behavior and interactions to provide a more lifelike and convincing user interaction experience. Through experiments and case studies in two conversational recommendation scenarios, we show that our framework can adapt to a variety of conversational recommendation settings and effectively simulate users’ personalized preferences. Consequently, our simulator is able to generate feedback that closely mirrors that of real users. This facilitates a reliable assessment of existing CRS studies and promotes the creation of high-quality conversational recommendation datasets. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

A Markov Traffic Model for Signalized Traffic Networks Based on Bayesian Estimation

In order to better understand the stochastic dynamic features of signalized traffic networks, we propose a Markov traffic model to simulate the dynamics of traffic link flow density for signalized urban traffic networks with demand uncertainty. In this model, we have four different state modes for the link according to different congestion levels of the link. Each link can only be in one of the four link state modes at any time, and the transition probability from one state to the other state is estimated by Bayesian estimation based on the distributions of the dynamic traffic flow densities, and the posterior probabilities. Therefore, we use a first-order Markov Chain Model to describe the dynamics of the traffic flow evolution process. We illustrate our approach for a small traffic network. Compared with the data from the microscopic traffic simulator SUMO, the proposed model can estimate the link traffic densities accurately and can give a reliable estimation of the uncertainties in the dynamic process of signalized traffic networks.

Developing IP product has become a common differentiation strategy for retailers to attract customers and remain competence strength. This study uses empirical model to relate consumer characteristics with IP product purchase. The results show that consumers shopping on weekends are more likely to buy IP products, and consumers who have stocking behavior are less likely to purchase IP products. Consumers who are members of the retailer also have lower probability to buy IP products. These findings provide suggestions for the retailers who want to apply differentiation strategy by introducing co-branded IP products. © 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Numerous redundant and irrelevant features, and outliers are usually contained in high-dimensional data whose presence, if ignored, can bring detrimental effects on the performance of data processing tasks. Feature selection as a trending topic in a great deal of domains has been greatly concerned, which can effectively deal with noise and outlier. In this work, we propose a novel unsupervised method that unifies the explicit feature selective matrix learning and structured graph learning into a framework. An explicit selection matrix only consisting of 0 and 1 are designed, which can be integrated into locally linear embedding, and can be effectively and efficiently solved with closed-form solution. Furthermore, we take into account the local consistency between the samples so that the low dimensional manifold structures of samples can be preserved to a better degree. Instead of using the pre-defined similarity matrix to construct graph, we make use of the way of learning to obtain the adaptive graph. Besides, for the purpose of exploiting the cluster structure of data, we impose a rank constraint on the graph. Notably, both explicit selection matrix and intrinsic structure are learned in low-dimensional feature subspace, and thus the proposed methodology is more straightforward. We present an effective and efficient algorithm for the resulting problem based on alternative optimization strategy, and establish its convergence and computational complexity analysis results. Extensive experiments verify that our proposed approach can significantly outperform advanced methods. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Salient object detection is a fundamental computer vision task. The majority of existing algorithms focus on aggregating multi-level features of pre-trained convolutional neural networks. Moreover, some researchers attempt to utilize edge information for auxiliary training. However, existing edge-aware models design unidirectional frameworks which only use edge features to improve the segmentation features. Motivated by the logical interrelations between binary segmentation and edge maps, we propose a novel Stacked Cross Refinement Network (SCRN) for salient object detection in this paper. Our framework aims to simultaneously refine multi-level features of salient object detection and edge detection by stacking Cross Refinement Unit (CRU). According to the logical interrelations, the CRU designs two direction-specific integration operations, and bidirectionally passes messages between the two tasks. Incorporating the refined edge-preserving features with the typical U-Net, our model detects salient objects accurately. Extensive experiments conducted on six benchmark datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms existing state-of-the-art algorithms in both accuracy and efficiency. Besides, the attribute-based performance on the SOC dataset show that the proposed model ranks first in the majority of challenging scenes. Code can be found at https://***/wuzhe71/SCAN.
