In this demonstration, we introduce our recent progress on speech and auditory technologies for potential ubiquitous, immersive and personalized applications. The first demo shows an intelligent spoken question answering system, which enables users to interact with a talking avatar via natural speech dialogues. The prototype system demonstrates our latest development on automatic speech recognition, keyword spotting, personalized text-to-speech synthesis and visual speech synthesis. The second demo exhibits a virtual concert with immersive audio effects. Through our virtual auditory technology, wearing simple earphones, listeners are able to experience immersive concert audio effects from an ordinary music file. We believe the technologies shown in the two demos can be easily deployed in many significant applications.

Head related transfer functions (HRTFs) vary with anatomical structures in head, pinna and torso. As we know, Chinese are highly different from their Western counterparts in anatomical characteristics. In this paper, we perform an experimental study on HRTF-based virtual auditory, in which the HRTF data are collected from two dummy heads: KEMAR and BHead210. KEMAR resembles the head of a worldwide average human and BHead210 replicates the head of an average Chinese. Our preliminary results show significant differences in sound localization performance between the two dummy heads. The localization performance, especially on the frontal plane, of BHead210-collected HRTF is better than KEMAR for Chinese subjects. We believe BHead210 is more suitable for Chinese in HRTF-based virtual auditory applications.

In order to eliminate the effect of the facial expression,and also improve the accuracy of the three dimensional (3D) face recognition,a new 3D face recognition method is proposed in this paper. First,segmenting the key regions and curves which are free from the facial and fully characterize the face; second,resampling curves and regions to uniform the data precision; third,processing data to extract the feature; finally,matching the features of curves and regions to identify 3D face. The Experiment results in actual 3D face database demonstrate the availability and effectiveness of the presented method.
