We construct an amplifier that interpolates between a nondeterministic, immaculate linear amplifier and a deterministic, ideal linear amplifier and beyond to nonideal linear amplifiers. The construction involves cascading an immaculate linear amplifier that has amplitude gain g1 with a (possibly) nonideal linear amplifier that has gain g2. With respect to normally ordered moments, the device has output noise μ2(G2−1) where G=g1g2 is the overall amplitude gain and μ2 is a noise parameter. When μ2≥1, our devices realize ideal (μ2=1) and nonideal (μ2>1) linear amplifiers. When 0≤μ2<1, these devices work effectively only over a restricted region of phase space and with some subunity success probability p✓. We investigate the performance of our μ2 amplifiers in terms of a gain-corrected probability-fidelity product and the ratio of input to output signal-to-noise ratios corrected for success probability.

Ovarian cancer (OVC) is one of the deadliest cancers in women. At present, effective clinical therapy for OVC is still limited. We adopted a computational method to identify OVC candidate genes based on subnetwork extraction algorithm in the protein interaction network. Of the final identified five genes, MSH3 and PIK3R3 genes have been reported to be implicated in OVC tumorigenesis, indicating that the method is effective, whereas the other three genes (MAPK8IP1, PICK1, and IQGAP3) might have potential roles in OVC development. The results provided a novel insight into identifying the OVC-related genes and exploring new methods for OVC therapy. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

This Letter presents a search for new resonances with mass larger than 250 GeV, decaying to a Z boson and a photon. The dataset consists of an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb⁻¹ of pp collisions collected at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The Z bosons are identified through their decays either to charged, light, lepton pairs (e⁺e⁻, μ⁺μ⁻) or to hadrons. The data are found to be consistent with the expected background in the whole mass range investigated and upper limits are set on the production cross section times decay branching ratio to Zγ of a narrow scalar boson with mass between 250 GeV and 2.75 TeV. © 2016 The Author(s)

The Ursid meteor shower is an annual shower that usually shows little activity. However, its Zenith Hourly Rate sometimes increases, usually either when its parent comet, 8P/Tuttle, is close to its perihelion or its aphelion. Outbursts when the comet is away from perihelion are not common and outburst when the comet is close to aphelion are extremely rare. The most likely explanation offered to date is based on the orbital mean motion resonances. The study of the aphelion outburst of December 2000 provided a means of testing that hypothesis. A new aphelion outburst was predicted for December 2014. The Spanish Meteor Network in collaboration with the French Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network set up a campaign to monitor this outburst and eventually retrieve orbital data that expands and confirms previous preliminary results and predictions. Despite unfavourable weather conditions over the South of Europe over the relevant time period precise trajectories from multi-station meteor data recorded over Spain were obtained, as well as orbital and radiant information for four Ursid meteors. The membership of these four meteors to the expected dust trails that were to provoke the outburst is discussed, and we characterize the origin of the outburst in the dust trail produced by the comet in the year 1392 A.D. In this first paper, the technology roadmap towards 3D-ICs is illustrated and the associated EMC challenges are described. This first paper also focuses on the role of interposers, associated electrical parasitics, and addresses concerns about signal and power integrity.

Emotion recognition from speech plays an important role in developing affective and intelligent Human computer Interaction. The goal of this work is to build an Automatic Emotion Variation Detection(AEVD) system to determine each emotional salient segment in continuous speech. We focus on emotion detection in angry-neutral speech, which is common in recent studies of AEVD. This work proposes a novel frame-work for AEVD using Multi-scaled Sliding Window(MSW-AEVD) to assign an emotion class to each window-shift by fusion decisions of all the sliding windows containing the shift. Firstly, sliding window with fixed-length is introduced as the basic procedure, in which several different fusion methods are investigated. Then multi-scaled sliding window is employed to support multi-classifiers with different timescale features, in which another two fusion strategies are provided. Finally, a post-processing is applied to refine the final outputs. Performance evaluation is carried out on the public Berlin database EMO-DB. Our experimental results show that proposed MSW-AEVD significantly outperforms the traditional HMM-based AEVD.

COnstraint-Based Reconstruction and Analysis (COBRA) provides a molecular mechanistic framework for integrative analysis of experimental data and quantitative prediction of physicochemically and biochemically feasible phenotypic states. The COBRA Toolbox is a comprehensive software suite of interoperable COBRA methods. It has found widespread applications in biology, biomedicine, and biotechnology because its functions can be flexibly combined to implement tailored COBRA protocols for any biochemical network. Version 3.0 includes new methods for quality controlled reconstruction, modelling, topological analysis, strain and experimental design, network visualisation as well as network integration of chemoinformatic, metabolomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and thermochemical data. New multi-lingual code integration also enables an expansion in COBRA application scope via high-precision, high-performance, and nonlinear numerical optimisation solvers for multi-scale, multi-cellular and reaction kinetic modelling, respectively. This protocol can be adapted for the generation and analysis of a constraint-based model in a wide variety of molecular systems biology scenarios. This protocol is an update to the COBRA Toolbox 1.0 and 2.0. The COBRA Toolbox 3.0 provides an unparalleled depth of constraint-based reconstruction and analysis methods. With more and more traffic monitoring cameras installed in large cities, big streaming data are being generated continuously and provides a lot of new application opportunities. Among the new applications, companion vehicle discovery is to identify vehicle groups that move together. To quickly identify companion vehicles from a special type of streaming traffic data, called Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) data, this paper proposes a framework and two algorithms following distributed data-parallel programming model. The main challenge is how to handle the scale of ANPR data and detect companion vehicles as soon as possible. The proposed framework is designed to instantly output companion vehicles when they pass through monitoring cameras. Our framework can be used in many time-sensitive scenarios like surveillance on suspect trackers for specific vehicles. Experiments with real ANPR data in a distributed environment verify that our approach can process streaming ANPR data directly and discover the companion vehicles in nearly real time. We also analyze the performance affecting factors from the experiments.

This paper describes a parallel discrete event simulator, Neuron Time Warp-Multi Thread (NTW-MT), developed for the simulation of reaction diffusion models of neurons. The simulator was developed as part of the NEURON project and is intended to be included in NEURON. It relies upon a stochastic discrete event model developed for chemical reactions. NTW-MT is optimistic and thread-based, in which communication latency among threads within the same process is minimized by pointers. We investigate the performance of NTW-MT on a reaction-diffusion model for the transmission of calcium waves in a neuron. Calcium plays a fundamental role in the second messenger system of a neuron. However, the mechanism by which calcium waves are transmitted is not entirely understood. Stochastic models are more realistic than deterministic models for small populations of ions such as those found in apical dendrites. To be more precise, we simulate a stochastic discrete event model for calcium wave propagation on an unbranched apical dendrite of a hippocampal pyramidal neuron. We examine the performance of NTW-MT on this calcium wave model and compare it to the performance of (1) a process based optimistic simulator and (2) a threaded simulator which uses a single priority (SQ) queue for each thread. Our multithreaded simulator is shown to achieve superior performance to these simulators. © 2015 ACM.

Traditional computer portrait caricature system mainly take the method that exaggerate and deform real images directly, that lead the facial image background also been deformed when exaggerate facial image. If in pretreatment stage, we segmented the characters and background of the input image, and then do the subsequent processing, the problem may be solved. But for better portrait caricature effects, we need an excellent segmentation algorithm. So, we propose an improved Grabcut image segmentation algorithm and use it to extract the prospect character image for exaggeration and deformation. In practical application, we separate deform and exaggerate the foreground characters image with TPS method, then fuse it with the original or new background picture, get the final image. Application proves, the method solves the background deformation problem well, and improves the quality and rate of image segmentation, caricature synthesis effect reality and natural. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.
