This paper proposes to solve the task scheduling problem in cloud computing by using a load balance aware genetic algorithm (LAGA) with Minmin and Max-min methods. Task scheduling problems are of great importance in cloud computing, and become especially challenging when taking load balance into account. Our proposed LAGA algorithm has several advantages when solving this kind of problems. Firstly, by introducing the time load balance (TLB) model to help establish the fitness function with makespan, the algorithm benefits from the ability to find the solution that performs best on load balance among a set of solutions with the same makespan. More importantly, the interaction between makespan and TLB helps the algorithm to minimize makespan in the same time. Secondly, Min-min and Max-min methods are used to produce promising individuals at the beginning of evolution, leading to noticeable improvement of evolution efficiency. We evaluated LAGA on several task scheduling problems and compared with a Min-min, Max-min improved version of genetic algorithm (MMGA), which does not use the TLB strategy. The results show that LAGA can obtain very competitive results with good load balancing properties, and outperform MMGA in both makespan and TLB objectives. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Weakly-supervised consumption intent detection in microblogs

Nowadays, more and more people are using microblogs to discuss various topics, sometimes revealing their potential consumption intent (CI). A consumption intent is a desire or hope for something to purchase. This paper proposes a weakly-supervised approach to detect those user posts containing consumption intent in microblogs. First, we collect a large number of posts containing a few designated hashtags and regard them as containing CI (positive instances). Posts without such hashtags are considered as negative instances. Then, we train a statistical classification model using the training data constructed as above and design three kinds of post-dependent features. We evaluate the model on 7, 902 manually annotated posts from microblogs and show that the proposed method is effective, even outperforms the supervised method. Instant messaging systems such as ICQ and Wechat enable interpersonal and pervasive interaction via the communication networks as well as the Internet. Using the same architecture and principles, a specific system called IMAS was developed for trading exhibitions. IMAS supports Android environments, helps to establish and maintain business links, and mediates requirements of visitors and offers of exhibitors. Both visitors and exhibitors can benefit more from the system if they can not only establish contacts and make schedules with each other, but also use and mashup further information services that are provided by the backend systems of different exhibitors. This paper reports on our efforts to extend IMAS with data services and mashups thereof, presents some intermediate progress, and discusses some hard issues encountered during the extension.

The paper presents a solution that empowers Android users with service mash up. While the solution has a practical background of mediating visitors and exhibitors for trading exhibitions, it also reflects a number of challenges in service modeling and composition in such mobile environments. Besides such issues as system architecture, implementation and case study, the focus of the paper is on how to compose services and utilize composed services on mobile devices in an easy-to-use manner.

In this study, we design a satellite TV antenna control system for car carrying with sensor technology, strapdown inertial navigation technology and signal processing technology. The control system uses dsPIC, GPS, 3-axis electronic compass, gyro, tuner and demodulator to work together. The process of system is divided into initial pointing stage and inertial navigation pointing stage. This paper presents a framework for segmentation of renal parenchymal area from ultrasound images based on a 2-step level set method. We used distance regularized level set evolution method to partition the kidney boundary, followed by region-scalable fitting energy minimization method to segment the kidney collecting system, and determined renal parenchymal area by subtracting the area of the collecting system from the gross kidney area. The proposed method demonstrated excellent validity and low inter-observer variability. © 2014 IEEE.

On large-scale clusters, tens to hundreds of applications can simultaneously access a parallel file system, leading to contention and in its wake to degraded application performance. However, the degree of interference depends on the specific file access pattern. On the basis of synchronized time-slice profiles, we compare the interference potential of different file access patterns. We consider both micro-benchmarks, to study the effects of certain patterns in isolation, and realistic applications to gauge the severity of such interference under production conditions. In particular, we found that writing large files simultaneously with small files can slow down the latter at small chunk sizes but the former at larger chunk sizes. We further show that such effects can seriously affect the runtime of real applications-up to a factor of five in one instance. In the future, both our insights and profiling techniques can be used to automatically classify the interference potential between applications and to adjust scheduling decisions accordingly.

With the rapid development of the technology of group broadcast, distributed computation and wireless network, how to construct a secure Group Key Exchange (GKE) protocol for a number of participants on channels is drawing more and more attention. Meanwhile, security analysis of cryptographic protocol has been a hotspot. Symbolic analysis is a major approach to analyse the security of protocols. In this paper, we propose a GKE protocol originated from a two-participant key exchange protocol and prove that the protocol is secure. We represent the protocol as processes in the spi calculus, and state their security properties as queries in ProVerif, an automatic analyser based on spi calculus.
