An index supporting spatial approximate keyword search on disks

Spatial approximate keyword queries consist of a spatial condition and a set of keywords as the textual condition. The spatial condition requires that the returned objects are inside a spatial region or nearby a location, and the textual condition requires that the returned objects are labeled with a set of keywords similar to the queried keywords. Such queries enable users to find objects they are interested in within a spatial database, and make mismatches between users' query keywords and spatial object keywords tolerant. With the rapid growth of data, spatial databases storing objects from diverse geographical regions can be no longer held in memories. Thus, it is essential to answer spatial approximate keyword queries over disk resident datasets. Existing works present methods either that return incomplete answers or index in memory, and effective solutions in disks are in demand. This paper presents a novel disk resident index RB-tree to support spatial approximate keyword queries. We study the principle of augmenting R-tree with the capacity of approximate keyword searching based on existing solutions, and store two kinds of bitmaps in R-tree nodes to build an RB-tree. RB-tree supports a wide range of spatial conditions such as range and nearest neighbor, combined with keyword similarity metrics such as edit distance, dice etc. Experimental results against R-tree on two real world datasets demonstrate the efficiency of our solution.

This paper proposes a Topic-Level Opinion Influence Model (TOIM) that simultaneously incorporates topic factor, user opinions and social influence in a unified probabilistic model with two stages learning processes. In the first stage, topic factor and user influence are integrated to generate users' influential relationship based on different topics;in the second stage, users' historical messages and social interaction records are leveraged by TOIM to construct their historical opinions and neighbors' opinion influence through a statistical learning process, which can be further utilized to predict users' future opinions on some specific topics. We evaluate our TOIM on a large-scaled dataset from Tencent Weibo, one of the largest microbloggings website in China. The experimental results show that TOIM can better predict users' opinion than other baseline methods. © 2012 ACM.

Smart home service system is a new service application in the service computing and cloud computing environment. This paper discusses the issues of business process analysis, modeling and design for smart home service system. A new smart home idea is introduced, and the system architecture is proposed which is constructed on three networks: home IoT network, home service network and family social network. Home business processes are analyzed and classified, and then a BPMN-based home business process modeling method is presented with the procurement business being taken as an example to illustrate the modeling method. System function design is discussed at the end.

In order to reduce cost and improve efficiency, many data centers adopt virtualization solutions. The advent of virtualization allows multiple virtual machines hosted on a single physical server. However, this poses new challenges for resource management. Web workloads which are dominant in data centers are known to vary dynamically with time. In order to meet application's service level agreement (SLA), how to allocate resources for virtual machines has become an important challenge in virtualized server environments, especially when dealing with fluctuating workloads and complex server applications. User experience is an important manifestation of SLA and attracts more attention. In this paper, the SLA is defined by server-side response time. Traditional resource allocation based on resource utilization has some drawbacks. We argue that dynamic resource allocation directly based on real-time user experience is more reasonable and also has practical significance. To address the problem, we propose a system architecture that combines response time measurements and analysis of user experience for resource allocation. An optimization model is introduced to dynamically allocate the resources among virtual machines. When resources are insufficient, we provide service differentiation and firstly guarantee resource requirements of applications that have higher priorities. We evaluate our proposal using TPC-W and Webbench. The experimental results show that our system can judiciously allocate system resources. The system helps stabilize applications' user experience. It can reduce the mean deviation of user experience from desired targets. Copyright © 2012 The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers.

In recent years, such SNS services as Facebook, Google+, and Twitter have become very popular. In such services, many sources of information are posted and shared, although user rankings are hardly considered. In this paper, we consider for web pages an evaluation technique, such as HITS and PageRank, for SNS user evaluation applications and propose an algorithm using a user's real distance. We consider various parameters, including user distance, favorites, and the numbers of friends in SNSs in our evaluation technique. We propose a new reputation network to measure the reliability of SNS information.

This work analytically studies the channel characteristics of 60 GHz wireless communication, particularly from five aspects: path loss, multi-path fading, spatial diversity, peak-to-average power ratio of OFDM and clear channel assessment. This investigation is performed in comparison to the 2.4 GHz wireless system. The observed merits of the 60 GHz wireless channels include: 1) the support of packing a large number of antennas at a transceiver to exploit spatial diversity, 2) light effect from multi-path fading due to its small average fade duration and 3) a fast detection of signals in carrier sense to achieve clear channel assessment. Its weaknesses consists of: 1) large path losses that lead to short communication ranges and 2) high peak-to-average power ratio that increases the cost and complexity in implementing OFDM in transceivers. © 2012 IEEE.

The chronic hyperglycemia of diabetes is associated with long-term damage, dysfunction, and failure of different organs, especially the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart, and blood vessels. The regular examination of diabetic patients can potentially reduce the risk of vision impairment and in the last instance blindness. Early diabetic retinopathy detection enables application of laser therapy treatment in order to prevent or delay loss of vision. The diagnostics and detection of diabetic retinopathy is performed by specialized ophthalmologists manually and represents expensive procedure. Automatic exudates detection and retina images classification would be helpful for reducing diabetic retinopathy screening costs and encouraging regular examinations. We proposed the automated algorithm that applies mathematical modeling which enables light intensity levels emphasis, easier exudates detection, efficient and correct classification of retina images. The proposed algorithm is robust to various appearance changes of retinal fundus images which are usually processed in clinical environments. © 2012 IEEE.
