Currently, Java has been gradually applied in such areas as robotics, industrial control, and other embedded real-time applications owning to its advantages like platform independence, robustness, security, etc. In order to improve the performance of Java's execution engine for embedded real-time applications, an embedded real-time Java processor JPOR-32 (32-bit Java Processor Optimized for RTSJ) is designed. In this paper, the memory access mechanism of JPOR-32 is presented. In JPOR-32, the optimized memory organization structure is designed to implement the runtime data areas of the Java virtual machine (JVM). Based on it, with the preprocessing operation, the memory access instructions optimization is implemented as well. The preprocessing operation enables the JVM's runtime operations involving dynamic loading, verification, preparation, resolution, etc. to be handled in advance. It not only provides an efficient and convenient way to implement memory access, but also makes the contribution to the WCET predictability. As to the memory management, in accordance with the Real-Time Specification for Java (RTSJ), garbage collection (GC) is not allowed in the immortal memory as well as the scoped memory, and in the heap, JPOR-32 adopts improved GC scheme suitable for embedded real-time Java environment. Besides, with the architectural support of the pipelined datapath, JPOR-32 provides effective supports for efficient and predictable memory access.

Service supply chain (SSC) has attracted more and more attention from academia and industry. Although there exists extensive product-based supply chain management models and methods, they are not applicable to the SSC as the differences between service and product. Besides, the existing supply chain management models and methods possess some common deficiencies. Because of the above reasons, this paper develops a novel value-oriented model for the management of SSC using the modeling methods of E3-value and Use Case Maps (UCMs). This model can not only resolve the problems of applicability and effectiveness of the existing supply chain management models and methods, but also answer the questions of `why the management model is this?' and `how to quantify the potential profitability of the supply chains?'. Meanwhile, the service business processes of SSC system can be established using its logic procedure. In addition, the model can also determine the value and benefits distribution of the entire service value chain and optimize the operations management performance of the service supply.

Although many methods of refining initialization have appeared, the sensitivity of K-Means to initial centers is still an obstacle in applications. In this paper, we investigate a new class of clustering algorithm, K-Alpha Means (KAM), which is insensitive to the initial centers. With K-Harmonic Means as a special case, KAM dynamically weights data points during iteratively updating centers, which deemphasizes data points that are close to centers while emphasizes data points that are not close to any centers. Through replacing minimum operator in K-Means by alpha-mean operator, KAM significantly improves the clustering performances.

Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) and larger Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) constitute a powerful tool for the modern warfighter and first responder. However, every developing technology must first be tested before being exported to the battlefield or hot spot to assure predictable behaviors. In today's digital age, computers give designers and testers unprecedented ability to quickly and easily test virtual models before physical prototypes are created and field tested. We have utilized emerging Free Open Source Software (FOSS) simulators and workbenches (e.g. FlightGear and AUV Workbench) to improve mission-driven MAV/UAV video and imagery capture and analysis capabilities. In this project, use of FlightGear to analyze flight trajectories and video capture capabilities of different UAVs is presented. FlightGear allows the free implementation of changeable flight dynamic models, weather, autopilot, GPS, and multiplayer to be included in the analysis of simulated flights. Another attractive aspect of FlightGear is its extensible and easy-to-modify implementation. Modifications are accomplished by changing or adding human readable XML files in the FlightGear subdirectories. In this effort, existing aerial vehicle models are incorporated into FlightGear to create flight trajectories and analyze video capture capabilities to determine the necessary toolset for analyzing imagery data to meet the mission needs. The limitations of the existing camera systems as well as effects of various flight parameters on mosaicking and georegistration are presented here. Sample analysis of the effect of aerial vehicle speed on the overlap of frames captured at the typical 30 frames/second frame rate, which provides a base for comparison of flight attributes, are demonstrated together with other parameters that affect mission performance. © 2010 ASCE.

The elderly represent a valid group of users who can potentially benefit greatly from engaging with technology, such as healthcare systems or playing digital games. Yet, less attention has been given to the significance of senior citizens as technology users, as compared to the common younger population. In an effort to fill in the gap, this workshop aims to investigate the design of technology for senior citizens. To provide for more focused, thus more productive discussion, we will use elderly mobile phone games as a case in point here. The overarching objective is to understand what can help to make for better and more meaningful use of interactive applications and technology by the elderly, for instance, games on the mobile phone. © 2010 Copyright is held by the author/owner(s).

Real-world face recognition systems often have to face the single sample per person (SSPP) problem, that is, only a single training sample for each person is enrolled in the database. In this case, many of the popular face recognition methods fail to work well due to the inability to learn the discriminatory information specific to the persons to be identified. To address this problem, in this paper, we propose an Adaptive Generic Learning (AGL) method, which adapts a generic discriminant model to better distinguish the persons with single face sample. As a specific implementation of the AGL, a Coupled Linear Representation (CLR) algorithm is proposed to infer, based on the generic training set, the within-class scatter matrix and the class mean of each person given its single enrolled sample. Thus, the traditional Fisher's Linear Discriminant (FLD) can be applied to SSPP task. Experiments on the FERET and a challenging passport face database show that the proposed method can achieve better results compared with other common solutions to the SSPP problem.

In many areas of pattern recognition and machine learning, subspace selection is an essential step. Fisher's linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is one of the most well-known linear subspace selection methods. However, LDA suffers from the class separation problem. The projection to a subspace tends to merge close class pairs. A recent result, named maximizing the geometric mean of Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergences of class pairs (MGMD), can significantly reduce the class separation problem. Furthermore, maximizing the harmonic mean of Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergences of class pairs (MHMD) emphasizes smaller divergences more than MGMD, and deals with the class separation problem more effectively. However, in many applications, labeled data are very limited while unlabeled data can be easily obtained. The estimation of divergences of class pairs is unstable using inadequate labeled data. To take advantage of unlabeled data for subspace selection, semi-supervised MHMD (SSMHMD) is proposed using graph Laplacian as normalization. Quasi-Newton method is adopted to solve the optimization problem. Experiments on synthetic data and real image data show the validity of SSMHMD.

Facial expression is one of the most expressive ways for human beings to deliver their emotion, intention, and other nonverbal messages in face to face communications. In this chapter, a layered parametric framework is proposed to synthesize the emotional facial expressions for an MPEG4 compliant talking avatar based on the three dimensional PAD model, including pleasure-displeasure, arousal-nonarousal and dominance-submissiveness. The PAD dimensions are used to capture the high-level emotional state of talking avatar with specific facial expression. A set of partial expression parameter (PEP) is designed to depict the expressive facial motion patterns in local face areas, and reduce the complexity of directly manipulation of low-level MPEG4 facial animation parameters (FAP). The relationship among the emotion (PAD), expression (PEP) and animation (FAP) parameter is analyzed on a virtual facial expression database. Two levels of parameter mapping are implemented, namely the emotion-expression mapping from PAD to PEP, and the linear interpolation from PEP to FAP. The synthetic emotional facial expression is combined with the talking avatar speech animation in a text to audio visual speech system. Perceptual evaluation shows that our approach can generate appropriate facial expressions for subtle and complex emotions defined by PAD and thus enhance the emotional expressivity of talking avatar. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2010.

With the development of systems biology, more and more researchers focus on the study of bio-molecular networks. In recent years, researchers in different fields have accumulated a large number of biological experimental data and algorithms for analysis and calculation of bio-molecular networks, but these data and methods are relatively independent, difficult to be utilized by biologists. Based on PSE-Bio, a problem solving environment for bioinformatics, this paper describes an integrated computing environment for bio-molecular networks in order to achieve molecular homology analysis, bio-molecular network building, querying, statistics and visualization.
