Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) guided robotic interventions have been introduced in order to advance prostate cancer detection and treatment. To overcome problems of such robotic interventions, we have been developing a pneumatically actuated MRI-compatible modular robotic system for MRI-guided transperineal prostate intervention and its interventional procedure. For system evaluation, a series of experiments have been conducted and this paper reports a needle insertion experiment using prostate phantom and patient mockup trials. The needle insertion experiment resulted in noticeable consistent error in one direction, which we will investigate further. Nonetheless, patient mockup experiences suggest that the modular robotic system and its interventional procedure are well integrated and implemented in clinical environment.

Background: It has been apparent in the last few years that small non coding RNAs (ncRNA) play a very significant role in biological regulation. Among these microRNAs (miRNAs), 22-23 nucleotide small regulatory RNAs, have been a major object of study as these have been found to be involved in some basic biological processes. So far about 706 miRNAs have been identified in humans alone. However, it is expected that there may be many more miRNAs encoded in the human genome. In this report, a "context-sensitive" Hidden Markov Model (CSHMM) to represent miRNA structures has been proposed and tested extensively. We also demonstrate how this model can be used in conjunction with filters as an ab initio method for miRNA identification. Results: The probabilities of the CSHMM model were estimated using known human miRNA sequences. A classifier for miRNAs based on the likelihood score of this "trained" CSHMM was evaluated by: (a) cross-validation estimates using known human sequences, (b) predictions on a dataset of known miRNAs, and (c) prediction on a dataset of non coding RNAs. The CSHMM is compared with two recently developed methods, miPred and CID-miRNA. The results suggest that the CSHMM performs better than these methods. In addition, the CSHMM was used in a pipeline that includes filters that check for the presence of EST matches and the presence of Drosha cutting sites. This pipeline was used to scan and identify potential miRNAs from the human chromosome 19. It was also used to identify novel miRNAs from small RNA sequences of human normal leukocytes obtained by the Deep sequencing (Solexa) methodology. A total of 49 and 308 novel miRNAs were predicted from chromosome 19 and from the small RNA sequences respectively Conclusion: The results suggest that the CSHMM is likely to be a useful tool for miRNA discovery either for analysis of individual sequences or for genome scan. NG-TEPHRA, a project hosted by the PRAGMA community attempts to simulate in high detail ash deposition from volcanic activity. This topic has an ever increasing relevance, moreover in the light of recent geological events in Iceland. The simulation, specific to the Irazu volcano in Costa Rica, requires careful modeling and parameter selection for validation of hypotheses due to low-confidence input data, thus with high uncertainty. This paper explores the resulting structure of the parameter sweep that is being implemented in the NIMROD portal having previously mentioned considerations in mind and analyzing its effect on the quality of the result. Further considerations regarding results handling within largely distributed, homogeneous simulations are discussed and the current solution strategy is described.

This paper presents an approach that combines both VoIP auditing and speech recognition, and an application of using speech recognition on VoIP voice data is described. It also deals with how to obtain VoIP voice data during audio communication: signaling protocol analysis and voice data traffic analysis. Feature extraction is a very important step in speech recognition, and the result derived from this research shows that the differences between the features extracted from voice recorded directly and voice captured through VoIP are very small and that applying speech recognition on VoIP auditing is applicable. © 2009 ICIC International.

The purkinje fibre cell is an important biological system where various nonlinear processes interact to conduct electrical excitation which maintains the normal physiological status of the purkinje fibre and even the ventricle. The complex processes can be quantitatively described by the mathematical model. Therefore, it is of great theoretical value and profound realistic significance to research on mathematical models of the purkinje cell, which consequently in depth elucidates the mechanism of the purkinje fiber clear in microcosmic fields.

Tongue diagnosis is a distinctive and essential diagnostic method. The color category of the tongue can be utilized to discover pathological changes on the tongues for identifying diseases. In this paper, a novel scheme is established which classify tongue images into various categories, including coating and substance categories. Firstly, we proposed a two level hierarch clustering method for quantizing all pixels into numerous vectors of feature value. Each vector can code a very small sub-class in RGB color space. Secondly, we utilized the vectors' distribution of these sub-classes to represent approximate chromatic information of tongue images. Then, a Bayesian network is employed to model the relationship between these quantized vectors and tongue color categories. The effectiveness of this scheme is tested on a group of 418 tongue images, and the classification results are reported.

In this paper a feature extraction method based on Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) is proposed in order to investigate the relationship between Doppler ultrasound blood flow signal (DUBFS) of wrist radial artery and the pathological changes of internal organs of human body. Two kinds of empirical model decomposition (EMD) based de-noising methods were compared in data preprocessing progress, and finally EMD interval thresholding (EMD-IT) method was selected to remove the noise of blood flow signal. Then the extracted features based on HHT were applied to classify healthy people from cholecystitis patients and nephritis patients, respectively. Experiment results showed that HHT was an effective method for blood flow signal analysis. Also, the extracted features had promising discriminating ability between the healthy people and different kinds of patients.

In this paper, we address the problem of designing and implementing low-cost yet effective user interfaces for interactive computer games that heavily use physically-based animation. Due to the nature of a physics-driven gaming setup in our system, we require that the interfaces should mimic the tangibility of real-world interfaces to maximize the playability of the game. Our prototype gaming system, called Space Foosball, is a virtual realization of the real-world foosball in a space-age setting. The biggest challenge to build our system was to design effective and robust interfaces to control the motion of user paddles, which in turn drive the physics simulation of the secondary motion between a soccer ball and the environment, and between a ball and game characters. To meet our tight development budget and schedule, we opted for off-the-shelf optical sensors as a basis of the controlling mechanism. These sensors are low-cost but provided a robust solution to our problem. Another important task to build the Space Foosball was implementing a high-performance game physics engine that suits for simulating the very dynamic foosball environment. To meet this demand, we designed and implemented an in-house physics engine, called Virtual Physics, based on a mathematical formulation of Lie groups. In less than a short period of two months, we successfully built our prototype gaming system which effectively utilizes tangible interfaces while robustly simulating the game physics environment. © The Eurographics Association 2009.

With the proliferation of new online services and wireless personal devices, location-based services and applications for mobile users are widespread in use today. But the privacy of these users exposes to others increasingly in accessing those location based services. Exposure of the location information may result in privacy threat by malicious servers and hackers. In this paper, we propose a new framework that mobile users can enjoy conveniently the services provided by location-based server (LBS), and also protect their location information. This framework prevents mobile users' location information from exposing in two ways: providing the server with fake identities;two different ways of diffusing a number of fake queries with the real query hidden when and where it was issued.

Value plays a central role in services and is considered as the ultimate objective that both providers and customers pursue through providing and consuming a service. In this paper, based on a brief discussion of the service value concept, we present a service value life cycle model (SVLC), where the value delivery process is decomposed into 7 phases (bi-lateral searching, bi-lateral negotiation, unilateral preparation, co-production, transferring, usage, and payment). Each phasepsilas repeatable tasks, output, quality metrics of the process and output, and possible innovative design decisions, were elaborately analyzed. A C2C service system, ***, is briefly discussed to help understand SVLC in the real world. Comparisons between SVLC and traditional service research shows that SVLC provides some significance to systematical service innovations and service quality metrics design from life cycle (temporal) point of view. Potential effects on service computing research and some future work are also discussed.
