Software systems often encounter various errors or exceptions in practice, and thus proper error handling code is essential to ensure the reliability of software systems. Unfortunately, error handling code is often bug-prone, while sufficiently testing them is challenging as such code often cannot be triggered under normal conditions. Motivated by this, recent studies have proposed to leverage software fault injection (SFI) based fuzzing to discover potential bugs in complicated error handling code. Despite the promising results achieved, their effectiveness and efficiency are still compromised in practice due to the huge search space of error sites, inadequate fuzzing guidance, and the overhead induced by context-sensitive SFI. To achieve effective and efficient testing of error handling code, this study presents AFL-FI, which first utilizes a similarity-based method to identify suspicious error sites, and then incorporates the idea of error site coverage to guide the fuzzing process. Finally, the design of lightweight context-sensitive SFI enables AFL-FI to execute test cases efficiently. We evaluate AFL-FI on eight large-scale open-source projects, and the results show that it can outperform existing state-of-the-art fuzzing tools significantly in terms of branch code coverage. More importantly, AFL-FI has discovered 13 previously unknown bugs, and all of them have been confirmed while 12 of them have been fixed. Besides, our evaluation also demonstrates that all the key designs of AFL-F I are effective that contribute significantly to its overall performance. © 2024 IEEE.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly permeating all aspects of human life, involving a network of devices that share sensitive data. A notable application is the e-healthcare systems, which employ connected sensors, medical servers, and wearable devices. However, the public nature of communication in e-healthcare systems poses challenges such as security, privacy, and authentication of participating entities. Recently, many authentication protocols have been introduced to address these challenges. However, most of these protocols remain vulnerable to various security attacks, including device or medical server impersonation, denial of service, physical or cloning, and de-synchronization attacks. Therefore, we introduce an authenticated key-management protocol utilizing hash functions and Cipher-Block Chaining-Advanced Encryption Standard encryption (CBC-AES) encryption. The proposed protocol also employs the Physical Unclonable Function (PUF), which makes it more robust and efficient in resisting physical or cloning attacks. Additionally, the proposed scheme resists various security threats, including impersonation, session key leakage, ephemeral secret leakage, and de-synchronization attacks. We analyze the scheme’s security and reliability through formal and informal analysis. The informal analysis demonstrates that the scheme encompasses crucial security features, while the formal analysis substantiates. Moreover, performance analysis of the proposed protocol with various competing results indicates that our protocol achieves an average reduction in communication and computation overheads by 36.03.% and 41.79%, respectively. © 2014 IEEE.

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have garnered significant attention owing to their remarkable capacity to extract representations from non-Euclidean data. Despite their success, the performance of prevalent GNNs degrades significantly when structural noise is introduced into the graph data. Besides, the reliance of GNNs on a considerable volume of labeled nodes presents challenges in dealing with the low-data regime where labeled nodes are scarce. This paper aims to address a challenging scenario in which structural noise and the low-data regime occur simultaneously. Specifically, we exploit the valuable information from the local topologies, i.e. subgraphs, of a graph as the augmented supervision signals for the extensive amounts of unlabeled nodes. Moreover, to alleviate the effects of structural noise, we remove potential noisy edges linking dissimilar nodes, generating robust subgraphs for the downstream node classification tasks. We conduct a series of experimental studies on canonical node classification tasks using three graph datasets. The results of our experimental analyses demonstrate that our approach can achieve state-of-the-art performance under structural noises and the low-data regime. © 2023 IEEE.

As a consequence of the Covid-19 outbreak, students are required to stay at home to prevent the virus from spreading. This has resulted in a quick acceptance of online learning, as students and faculty cannot participate in in-class activities. This study examines the determinants affecting E-Learning uptake in Oman during the Covid-19 outbreak, using 223 student responses and structural equation modeling (SEM). Four hypotheses were supported, while two were rejected. Specifically, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and institutional support affect behavioral intention to adopt E-Learning. However, infrastructure support and privacy risk, on the other hand, were not. Thus, this research serves as a springboard for higher education officials to increase the use of E-Learning and adjust to student hurdles for students to comprehend and effectively use the system. © 2022 IEEE.

Feature-only partition of large graph data in distributed Graph Neural Network (GNN) training offers advantages over commonly adopted graph structure partition, such as minimal graph preprocessing cost and elimination of cross-worker subgraph sampling burdens. Nonetheless, performance bottleneck of GNN training with feature-only partitions still largely lies in the substantial communication overhead due to cross-worker feature fetching. To reduce the communication overhead and expedite distributed training, we first investigate and answer two key questions on convergence behaviors of GNN model in feature-partition based distribute GNN training: 1) As no worker holds a complete copy of each feature, can gradient exchange among workers compensate for the information loss due to incomplete local features? 2) If the answer to the first question is negative, is feature fetching in every training iteration of the GNN model necessary to ensure model convergence? Based on our theoretical findings on these questions, we derive an optimal communication plan that decides the frequency for feature fetching during the training process, taking into account bandwidth levels among workers and striking a balance between model loss and training time. Extensive evaluation demonstrates consistent results with our theoretical analysis, and the effectiveness of our proposed design.

It is estimated that over 60% of people around the globe consume alcohol and cigars daily. Many people use them beyond the permitted limit, which causes lung cancer, liver and kidney failure. If there is a system that could monitor their intake level, it will alert them in case of excess consumption, which could help them control the intake. To help the users monitor their consumption, we introduce Cleo Eyeglasses in this paper. Cleo is a wearable spectacle device with a mounted camera and single onboard computer that performs custom trained object recognition to identify alcoholic beverages and cigarettes. Upon recognition, a log is automatically maintained in the corresponding mobile application. If the intake exceeds the user threshold, then our system generates an alert to both the user and concerned medical personnel. Cigarette/alcohol consumption can immediately affect the body without noticeable symptoms. Cleo addresses this with keen monitoring of vital body parameters and generates an alert when abnormalities are detected. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Hearing-impaired people cannot communicate with normal people easily. Most people are not aware of sign language recognition. To support this, machine learning and CV can be used to create an impact on the impaired. This can be improved into automatic editors, in which the person can easily understand the sign language of the impaired people by just using hand sign recognition. In non-verbal communication, hand gesture always being an important mode of communication and it plays a vital role to bridge gap between deaf and dumb people. Several sign language recognition systems have been developed but the systems are not flexible and cost-effective. Physically challenged people can express their emotions and feelings through sign language. In this paper, we develop a sign detector that can detect signs and numbers and also other signs that are used in sign language with the help of OpenCV and Keras modules in python. By using this technology, we can understand what they want to convey through sign language which is not a common language to communicate with people. OpenCV and Keras of python are the modules used to achieve our work and the proposed work proved to be a user-friendly approach to communication by using Python language to recognize sign languages for hearing-impaired persons. © 2023 IEEE.

QCIRCUITNET: A LARGE-SCALE HIERARCHICAL DATASET FOR QUANTUM ALGORITHM DESIGN

Quantum computing is an emerging field recognized for the significant speedup it offers over classical computing through quantum algorithms. However, designing and implementing quantum algorithms pose challenges due to the complex nature of quantum mechanics and the necessity for precise control over quantum states. Despite the significant advancements in AI, there has been a lack of datasets specifically tailored for this purpose. In this work, we introduce QCircuitNet, the first benchmark and test dataset designed to evaluate AI’s capability in designing and implementing quantum algorithms in the form of quantum circuit codes. Unlike using AI for writing traditional codes, this task is fundamentally different and significantly more complicated due to highly flexible design space and intricate manipulation of qubits. Our key contributions include: 1. A general framework which formulates the key features of quantum algorithm design task for Large Language Models. 2. Implementation for a wide range of quantum algorithms from basic primitives to advanced applications, with easy extension to more quantum algorithms. 3. Automatic validation and verification functions, allowing for iterative evaluation and interactive reasoning without human inspection. 4. Promising potential as a training dataset through primitive fine-tuning results. We observed several interesting experimental phenomena: fine-tuning does not always outperform few-shot learning, and LLMs tend to exhibit consistent error patterns. QCircuitNet provides a comprehensive benchmark for AI-driven quantum algorithm design, offering advantages in model evaluation and improvement, while also revealing some limitations of LLMs in this domain. To enable parallel processing, the Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) structure is introduced to the design of asyn-chronous Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) consensus protocols, known as DAG-based BFT. Existing DAG-based BFT protocols operate in successive waves, with each wave containing three or four Reliable Broadcast (RBC) rounds to broadcast data, resulting in high latency due to the three communication steps required in each RBC. For instance, Tusk, a state-of-the-art DAG-based BFT protocol, has a good-case latency of 7 communication steps and an expected worst latency of 21 communication steps. To reduce latency, we propose GradedDAG, a new DAG-based BFT consensus protocol based on our adapted RBC called Graded RBC (GRBC) and the Consistent Broadcast (CBC), with each wave consisting of only one GRBC round and one CBC round. Through GRBC, a replica can deliver data with a grade of 1 or 2, and a non-faulty replica delivering the data with grade 2 can ensure that more than 2/3 of replicas have delivered the same data. Meanwhile, through CBC, data delivered by different non-faulty replicas must be identical. In each wave, a block in the GRBC round will be elected as the leader. If a leader block has been delivered with grade 2, it and all its ancestor blocks can be committed. GradedDAG offers a good-case latency of 4 communication steps and an expected worst latency of 7.5 communication steps, significantly lower than the state-of-the-art. Experimental results demonstrate GradedDAG's feasibility and efficiency.

Since the inception of secure communication, safeguarding data confidentiality has been paramount. With the increased reliance on technology, the need for robust security mechanisms is more critical than ever. This paper explores confidentiality in cybersecurity, focusing on symmetric encryption algorithms. While symmetric encryption, particularly the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), is in wide use, concerns arise regarding its static nature. Therefore, the paper introduces a dynamic cipher, augmenting AES security by introducing a key-dependent S-Box. By leveraging the RC4 key schedule, the proposed cipher generates unique S-Boxes for each encryption key, significantly increasing security against non-generic attacks. Theoretical analysis demonstrates the proposed cipher is capable of resisting brute force, linear cryptanalysis, and differential cryptanalysis. Furthermore, its adaptability to existing AES implementations ensures practicality and ease of adoption. © 2024 IEEE.
