Video grounding aims to localize a specific segment corresponding to a text query in an untrimmed video. Due to the tremendous computational cost required to process the video frames, the de facto paradigm of video grounding is to extract video features using pretrained video encoders. The parameters of the video encoders are fixed during training, which limits the performance of the localization model. To solve this problem, we propose a Memory-Augmented Transformer (MAT) model. Specifically, each video is split into non-overlapping clips, and our MAT processes videos in a clip-by-clip manner while caching video features into FIFO cached memory queues. By enabling early return, our MAT outperforms previous methods with only less than 60% frames seen. Extensive experimental results on three public benchmark datasets demonstrate that our MAT can achieve competitive performance while being much more efficient than currently prevailing two-stage methods. The rapid development of Internet of Things (IoT) technology has driven the intelligent transformation of various industries, including manufacturing, agriculture, and healthcare, etc., significantly enhancing their management capabilities and decision-making efficiency. Data analysis is crucial, serving as both the core technology of this transformation and a major driving force for advancing industry intelligence. However, the increasing volume of data has led to high energy consumption during data analysis, posing significant challenges to environmental and economic sustainability. Integrating renewable energy sources (RESs) is an effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions due to their low-carbon and renewable nature. Additionally, the spatiotemporal variability and complementarity of RES generation and grid electricity prices provide favorable conditions for distributed data processing. Therefore, a two-stage demand response scheme is proposed to reduce carbon emissions and electricity costs by prioritizing data processing in data centers (DCs) where RES is abundant or electricity prices are low, based on RES generation and electricity price signals. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme reduces 36.37% carbon emissions and 20.49% electricity costs compared to the benchmark algorithm, indicating its potential for both environmental and economic optimization.

Integrated circuits(ICs) and optoelectronic chips are the foundation stones of the modern information society. The IC industry has been driven by the so-called "Moore's law" in the past 60 years, and now has entered the post Moore's law era. In this paper, we review the recent progress of ICs and optoelectronic chips. The research status, technical challenges and development trend of devices, chips and integrated technologies of typical IC and optoelectronic chips are focused on. The main contents include the development law of IC and optoelectronic chip technology, the IC design and processing technology, emerging memory and chip architecture, brain-like chip structure and its mechanism, heterogeneous integration, quantum chip technology, silicon photonics chip technology, integrated microwave photonic chip, and optoelectronic hybrid integrated chip.

When the Metaverse Meets Carbon Neutrality: Ongoing Efforts and Directions

The metaverse has recently gained increasing attention from the public. It builds up a virtual world where we can live as a new role regardless of the role we play in the physical world. However, building and operating this virtual world will generate an extraordinary amount of carbon emissions for computing, communicating, displaying, and so on. This inevitably hinders the realization of carbon neutrality as a priority of our society, adding heavy burden to our earth. In this survey, we first present a green viewpoint of the metaverse by investigating the carbon issues in its three core layers, namely the infrastructure layer, the interaction layer, and the economy layer, and estimate their carbon footprints in the near future. Next, we analyze a range of current and emerging applicable green techniques for the purpose of reducing energy usage and carbon emissions of the metaverse, and discuss their limitations in supporting metaverse workloads. Then, in view of these limitations, we discuss important implications and bring forth several insights and future directions to make each metaverse layer greener. After that, we investigate green solutions from the governance perspective, including both public policies in the physical world and regulation of users in the virtual world, and propose an indicator Carbon Utility (CU) to quantify the service quality brought by an user activity per unit of carbon emissions. Finally, we identify an issue for the metaverse as a whole and summarize three directions: (1) a comprehensive consideration of necessary performance metrics, (2) a comprehensive consideration of involved layers and multiple internal components, and (3) a new assessing, recording, and regulating mechanism on carbon footprints of user activities. SciMRC: Multi-perspective Scientific Machine Reading Comprehension

Scientific machine reading comprehension (SMRC) aims to understand scientific texts through interactions with humans by given questions. As far as we know, there is only one dataset focused on exploring full-text scientific machine reading comprehension. However, the dataset has ignored the fact that different readers may have different levels of understanding of the text, and only includes single-perspective question-answer pairs, leading to a lack of consideration of different perspectives. To tackle the above problem, we propose a novel multi-perspective SMRC dataset, called SciMRC, which includes perspectives from beginners, students and experts. Our proposed SciMRC is constructed from 741 scientific papers and 6,057 question-answer pairs. Each perspective of beginners, students and experts contains 3,306, 1,800 and 951 QA pairs, respectively. The extensive experiments on SciMRC by utilizing pre-trained models suggest the importance of considering perspectives of SMRC, and demonstrate its challenging nature for machine comprehension. © 2023, CC BY.

Shared parking lots are new types of sharing economy and generate a large social impact in our daily lives. Post-use payment is a hallmark method in the shared parking lots: it reflects trust in users and brings convenience to everyone. Accordingly, payment behavior prediction via data science technology becomes extremely important. We cooperate with a real intelligent parking platform, ThsParking, which is one of the top smart parking platforms in China, to study payment prediction, and encounter three challenges. First, we need to process a large volume of data generated every day. Second, a variety of parking related data shall be utilized to build the prediction model. Third, we need to consider the temporal characteristics of input data. In response, we propose TR-GCN, a temporal relational graph convolutional network for payment behavior prediction on shared parking lots, and we build a reminder to remind unpaid users. TR-GCN addresses the aforementioned challenges with three modules. 1) We develop an efficient data preprocessing module to extract key information from big data. 2) We build a GCN-based module with user association graphs from three different perspectives to describe the diverse hidden relations among data, including relations between user profile, temporal relations between parking patterns, and spatial relations between different parking lots. 3) We build an LSTM-based module to capture the temporal information from historical events. Experiments based on 50 real parking lots show that our TR-GCN achieves 91.2% accuracy, which is about 7% higher than the state-of-the-art and the reminder service makes more than half of the late-payment users pay, saving 1.9% loss for shared parking lots. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

Efficient management and cost-related factors in the power sector call for accurate short-term load forecasting as it enables better planning with the electric grid and achieving stability within it. This paper looks into the state-of-the-art forecasting strategies that enhance load forecasts made in shorter time frames. Such techniques include but are not limited to machine learning applications, effective data models, and multi-dimensional modeling leveraging historical, meteorological, and economic data. Their review is carried out in detail with their advantages and disadvantages and their application in practice. Furthermore, this study strives to understand the barriers that need to be overcome in the quest to increase the accuracy of the forecasting models especially concerning renewable energy sources. We illustrate how new trends relate to future developments of predictive models about supporting the decision-making in operating power systems and improving the reliability and sustainability of energy systems.

Diplomacy is one of the most sophisticated activities in human society, involving complex interactions among multiple parties that require skills in social reasoning, negotiation, and long-term strategic planning. Previous AI agents have demonstrated their ability to handle multi-step games and large action spaces in multi-agent tasks. However, diplomacy involves a staggering magnitude of decision spaces, especially considering the negotiation stage required. While recent agents based on large language models (LLMs) have shown potential in various applications, they still struggle with extended planning periods in complex multi-agent settings. Leveraging recent technologies for LLM-based agents, we aim to explore AI’s potential to create a human-like agent capable of executing comprehensive multi-agent missions by integrating three fundamental capabilities: 1) strategic planning with memory and reflection;2) goal-oriented negotiation with social reasoning;and 3) augmenting memory through self-play games for self-evolution without human in the loop. Solar energy is considered one of the best essential energy sources to solve the present power crisis. The solar photovoltaic system has a low conversion efficiency that inflicts maximum power extractions. The non-linear relationship between the voltage and current insists on using a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller. Perturb and observe (P&O) MPPT controller is popular because of its simple design and cost-effectiveness features;nonetheless, it has drawbacks while operating under partial shading conditions (PSC). The maximum power trapezium (MPT) method modified the P&O algorithm by incorporating an appropriate scanning mechanism for PSC. Despite having good PSC performance, this method's tracking time is much longer than the conventional algorithm in both uniform irradiance conditions (UIC) and PSC. The algorithm proposed in this paper modifies the MPT method with an extra strategy to distinguish between the UIC and PSC. If the pattern is recognized as UIC, the proposed method utilizes the conventional P&O algorithm to track the MPP;otherwise, scanning techniques are being used. The proposed algorithm's operation was tested on simulation using distinct UIC and PSC patterns and worked effectively. © 2022 IEEE.

The security of the dynamic heterogeneous redundancy(DHR) architecture relies on the heterogeneity of its executors, which also defines the vulnerability of the mimic system. In order to select executors with reliable and significant dissimilarity as service executors, we propose a DHR executor selection algorithm based on historical credibility and dissimilarity clustering(HCDC), which adds two metrics of executor historical credibility and dissimilarity. First, to maximize the difference between heterogeneous executor pools,clustering is performed based on the dissimilarity of the executor. Second, the executor with the highest historical credibility is selected from the heterogeneous executor pool as the candidate pool. The historical credibility is dynamically updated by the negative feedback control based on the results of the multi-mode adjudicator. Finally, the dynamic scheduling algorithm selects the executors from the candidate pool to form the set of service executors. The simulation results demonstrate that, in comparison to existing methods,the algorithm reduces the attack success rate and average failure rate while increasing system reliability.
