When Crowdsensing Meets Smart Cities: A Comprehensive Survey and New Perspectives

Crowdsensing has received widespread attention in recent years. It is extensively employed in smart cities and intelligent transportation systems. This paper comprehensively surveys the latest research advancements in crowdsensing for smart cities from a novel perspective. Specifically, this paper is categorized according to sensing entities in smart cities, including human-oriented sensing, vehicle-oriented sensing, and infrastructure-oriented sensing. Meanwhile, the development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-assisted sensing in recent years is also summarized, accompanied by a timeline of related research. To facilitate easy comprehension, we have positioned the reading flow into the corresponding architectures, resolved problems, existing technical solutions, and specific application scenarios for different sensing entities. In particular, the problems to be solved are further analyzed from four technical perspectives, namely mathematics and operational research, artificial intelligence and machine learning, incentive mechanisms, security and privacy protection. Based on the proposed taxonomy, recent studies are thoroughly investigated to illustrate the current state of research in crowdsensing. Furthermore, this paper highlights the emerging applications of human-oriented and vehicle-oriented sensing in smart cities, as well as the frameworks, platforms, simulators, and datasets involved in crowdsensing. Finally, this paper discusses research directions related to crowdsensing in smart cities, such as digital twins, metaverses, and artificial intelligence-generated content. The primary goal of this survey is to review and synthesize prior research, identify potential avenues for future research, and explore opportunities for collaboration with other relevant research domains. © 1998-2012 IEEE.

Air quality forecasting is critical for environmental monitoring and public health, and in this study, we propose a hybrid approach utilizing Gooseneck Barnacle Optimization (GBO) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to enhance predictive accuracy. The air quality dataset, comprising pollutant concentrations (CO, NOx, benzene) and meteorological factors (temperature, humidity), is sourced from the UCI Machine Learning Repository. GBO is employed to fine-tune the ANN's hyperparameters (especially the weight and bias), as well as the number of layers, neurons, and activation functions, to improve regression-based forecasting. The GBOANN model achieves a Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 0.562 and a Root Mean Squared Percentage Error (RMSPE) of 5.63%, outperforming other metaheuristic methods like BMO, SSA, DA, MVO, and EMA. This study demonstrates the GBO-ANN model's potential for accurate real-time air quality forecasting, offering a robust, sustainable solution. © 2025 IEEE.

Online Credibility Assessment of Equipment Digital Twin for Discrete Manufacturing

The equipment digital twins (EDTs) for discrete manufacturing should be calibrated quickly to avoid irreversible physical damage to the equipment caused by biased control commands. Therefore, an online credibility assessment method for EDTs is urgently needed. However, existing assessment approaches consume too much time, and thus could not reveal dynamic faults in time. In this paper, the dynamic relationship between online evolution and actual applications of EDTs is investigated. Then, two steps are proposed to accelerate the assessment process significantly. One involves pre-constructing a performance-deviation-agent (PDA), and the other involves dynamically fitting the application-time-window (ATW) probability distribution. The methodology is applicable to discrete manufacturing processes. The dynamic credibility of EDT evolution process can be updated after every iteration of the model evolution. Sorting manufacturing equipment was used as a case study to demonstrate the effectiveness of this method. The time consumption was reduced by 90% compared with traditional assessment methods in the case. © 2025 IEEE.

Physiological Information Preserving Video Compression for rPPG

Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) has recently attracted much attention due to its non-contact measurement convenience and great potential in health care and computer vision applications. Early rPPG studies were mostly developed on self-collected uncompressed video data, which limited their application in scenarios that require long-distance real-time video transmission, and also hindered the generation of large-scale publicly available benchmark datasets. In recent years, with the popularization of high-definition video and the rise of telemedicine, the pressure of storage and real-time video transmission under limited bandwidth have made the compression of rPPG video inevitable. However, video compression can adversely affect rPPG measurements. This is due to the fact that conventional video compression algorithms are not specifically proposed to preserve physiological signals. Based on this, we propose a video compression scheme specifically designed for rPPG application. The proposed approach consists of three main strategies: 1) facial ROI-based computational resource reallocation;2) rPPG signal preserving bit resource reallocation;and 3) temporal domain up- and down-sampling coding. UBFC-rPPG, ECG-Fitness, and a self-collected dataset are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can preserve almost all physiological information after compressing the original video to 1/60 of its original size. The proposed method is expected to promote the development of telemedicine and deep learning techniques relying on large-scale datasets in the field of rPPG measurement. © 2013 IEEE.

Text imageability is often used to quantize the ease with which a natural language description can invoke a mental image in a reader. With the proliferation of artificial intelligence powered text-to-image generation models, it will likely play an even more significant role in bridging the gap between language and visual representation. Unfortunately, automatically suggesting proper imageable textural prompts from a piece of plain text has scarcely been systematically investigated. In this paper, we narrow the gap by introducing a novel framework for text imageability assessment to automatically predict whether a piece of plain text and a prompt is highly imageable to be fed into a text-to-image model for faithful image generation. We have also developed a new visual-text dataset, named Ted1.6k, to facilitate model training and validation. Experiment results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in promoting prompt-guided image generation. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Metamorphic testing (MT) is an effective software quality assurance method;it uses metamorphic relations (MRs) to examine the inputs and outputs of multiple test cases. Metamorphic exploration (ME) and metamorphic robustness testing (MRT) are advanced additions to the MT literature: ME can enable better understanding, and thus testing, of systems;MRT can test software robustness without an oracle. Metamorphic relation patterns (MRPs) are abstractions or templates for multiple concrete MRs. The performance of MT/ME/MRT relies on the quality of MRs, but the identification of MRs is often a manual task requiring some knowledge of MRPs, creative thinking and a good understanding of the system. In other words, the effective identification of MRs remains a challenge and requires further study. In this paper, we propose formal definitions to describe the relationship between multiple MRPs in order to classify them. We also identify a series of new MRPs and propose a new MT framework that can guide the identification and application of MRPs. Based on our definitions, we present the notion of MRP family trees and further propose two trees by classifying previously published MRPs and our proposed MRPs, in order to make it easier for users to find their target MRPs for reuse, reference or inference. Finally, we report on case studies using the MRPs and our framework to guide the identification of MRs for MT/ME/MRT and successfully detect multiple violations. © 2025 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Federated learning (FL) has emerged as a promising approach for collaborative machine learning while respecting data privacy. However, directly aggregating local models during FL training can expose sensitive information, as adversaries may analyze model parameters to infer the underlying raw data. To address this concern, implementing a robust identity authentication mechanism can verify the integrity of local models and confirm their sources. However, many existing authentication schemes are computationally intensive, which can hinder performance. In this article, we present a lightweight authentication scheme for FL called EPPAFL. This innovative approach is compatible with all machine learning algorithms, maintains data utility, and ensures strong privacy protection. Additionally, it can be integrated with detection mechanisms to defend against data poisoning and free-rider attacks. Specifically, we first design a certificateless signature scheme based on the elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) and then propose an anonymous and efficient authentication protocol based on the Chinese remainder theorem (CRT), which supports batch verification, dynamic updates, and revocations of group keys. Moreover, participants interact anonymously to achieve secure communication, and trusted authority (TA) can track and recover the real identities of participants in case of malicious activities. We provide formal security proofs and analyses to demonstrate the achieved security properties. Performance evaluations demonstrate that our proposed protocol significantly reduces the costs associated with signature generation and verification, outperforming the existing schemes in both communication and computational efficiency. © 2014 IEEE.

Recently, graph neural networks(GNNs) have played a key crucial in many recommendation situations. In particular, contrastive learning-based hypergraph neural networks (HGNNs) are gradually becoming a research focus for addressing issues of data sparsity and noise. Despite many studies proving their outstanding performance, there are still some shortcomings: i) Most contrastive learning-based HGNNs primarily rely on cross-view contrastive learning, while neglecting contrastive learning on the interaction graph. ii) Utilizing node embedding for hypergraph structure learning is susceptible to the influence of low-quality representations, thereby constraining the learning capability of HGNNs. To address these issues, we offer a Semantic Similarity-based Graph Contrastive Learning framework (SSGCL), which aims to jointly learn representations with rich semantic information through within-view and cross-view contrastive learning. Specifically, we first introduce consistency contrastive learning, which captures self-supervised signals through semantic similarity between nodes and their neighborhoods. It better captures the unique features of nodes through the connections between nodes and their neighborhoods. Then, we utilize interaction graph learning hypergraph structure, promoting it to extract potential node connections and thus improving its ability to describe homogeneous node relationships. Steel Surface Defect Detection Algorithm Based on S-YOLOv8

Steel, being a widely utilized material in industrial production, holds a pivotal role in ensuring product safety and longevity. Hence, the exploration and implementation of steel surface defect detection technology carry significant importance. This paper introduces a steel surface defect detection algorithm based on S-YOLOv8. The algorithm, rooted in YOLOv8n as a benchmark model, initially incorporates a shift-wise shift operator in the backbone network. This introduction notably enhances accuracy compared to conventional CNN models while markedly reducing computational demands. Furthermore, the utilization of the SF-Neck framework, integrating the scale sequence feature fusion module (SSFF) and triple feature encoder module (TFE) in the head network, enriches the network’s multi-scale information extraction capabilities. Subsequently, the adoption of the WIoU loss function enhances the overall detector performance. Lastly, the integration of the SEAM occlusion attention module refines the detection head segment of the YOLOv8 algorithm, effectively addressing defect occlusion challenges. Experiments conducted on the NEU-DET dataset reveal that the mAP value of the S-YOLOv8 model reaches an impressive 84.2%. Comparative analysis with other mainstream algorithms demonstrates a substantial enhancement in detection accuracy, alongside a reduction in instances of leakage and misdetection. Consequently, this study charts a new technical trajectory for quality control within the steel manufacturing industry. © (2025), (International Association of Engineers). All rights reserved.

The conventional Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm is a state-of-the-art trust-region optimization method for solving bundle adjustment problems in the Structure-from-Motion community, which not only takes advantage of the fast convergence of the Gauss-Newton method, but also the stability of the gradient descent method when approaching optimal solutions. However, the damping ratio of LM is simply provided by trial-and-error, which causes slow convergence rate for large-scale problems. This paper proposes the Yamashita-Fukushima LM (YFLM) algorithm to reduce the time complexity for global bundle adjustment, where the damping factor is determined by Yamashita and Fukushima’s method. YFLM dynamically calculates a more reasonable and optimal damping ratio according to the newest reprojection error. The experimental results show that the YFLM algorithm outperforms the conventional LM algorithm for most public bundle adjustment datasets. Besides this, the convergence of the YFLM algorithm is also evaluated with different σ∈(0,2]. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
