A New Integrated Fuzzifier Evaluation and Selection (NIFEs) Algorithm for Fuzzy Clustering

Fuzzy C-means (FCM) is simple and widely used for complex data pattern recognition and image analyses. However, selecting an appropriate fuzzifier (m) is crucial in identifying an optimal number of patterns and achieving higher clustering accuracy, which few studies have investigated. Built upon two existing methods on selecting fuzzifier, we developed an integrated fuzzifier evaluation and selection algorithm and tested it using real datasets. Our findings indicate that the consistent optimal number of clusters can be learnt from testing different fuzzifiers for each dataset and the fuzzifier with the lowest value for this consistency should be selected for clustering. Our evaluation also shows that the fuzzifier impacts the clustering accuracy. For longitudinal data with missing values, m = 2 could be an empirical rule to start fuzzy clustering, and the best clustering accuracy was achieved for tested data, especially using our multiple-imputation based fuzzy clustering.

The critical infrastructures of a nation including the power grid and the communication network are highly interdependent. Recognizing the need for a deeper understanding of the interdependency in a multi-layered network, significant efforts have been made by the research community in the last few years to achieve this goal. Accordingly a number of models have been proposed and analyzed. Unfortunately, most of the models are over simplified and, as such, they fail to capture the complex interdependency that exists between entities of the power grid and the communication networks involving a combination of conjunctive and disjunctive relations. To overcome the limitations of existing models, we propose a new model that is able to capture such complex interdependency relations. Utilizing this model, we provide techniques to identify the K most 'vulnerable' nodes of an interdependent network. We show that the problem can be solved in polynomial time in some special cases, whereas for some others, the problem is NP-complete. We establish that this problem is equivalent to computation of a fixed point of a multilayered network system and we provide a technique for its computation utilizing Integer Linear programming. Finally, we evaluate the efficacy of our technique using real data collected from the power grid and the communication network that span the Maricopa County of Arizona. © 2014 IEEE.

The Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP) is a well-studied, NP-Hard combinatorial optimization problem with practical applications in timetabling, scheduling, logistics, circuit design and data visualisation, to name a few. In this paper a Memetic Algorithm is described, which utilises a ternary tree structure for its population and uses a Tabu Search as its local improvement strategy. The Tabu Search is also run in parallel, significantly reducing the running time of the algorithm. The ternary tree not only stores the individuals within the population, but the inherent structure within this tree also determines parent selection for crossover. A small number of rules, which include fitness and diversity-based rules, govern whether a newly produced solution remains within the population, or whether it is discarded. These key features are tested against a basic Memetic Algorithm using the instances from the QAP library, QAPLIB, and have shown to significantly improve the performance in terms of both time and solution quality. The best version of the Memetic Algorithm is shown to perform competitively with some of the state-of-the-art algorithms for the QAP from the literature, with grid-based and real-life instances shown to be solved very efficiently and effectively by the presented algorithms.

Electroencephalography is a commonly used tool for presurgical evaluation of epilepsy patients. In this paper, we present a quantitative evaluation of interictal high frequency oscillations (HFOs) in scalp Electroencephalographies (EEGs) for epileptogenic region localization. We process multichannel EEGs using time-frequency spectral analysis in order to detect HFOs in each EEG channel. Comparison between the results of time-frequency analysis and visual assessment is performed to verify the reliability of time-frequency analysis. Later, t-test and Pearson correlation analysis are performed to analyze the relationships between ictal HFOs and interictal HFOs. The high correlations between interictal and ictal HFOs imply that interictal HFOs, like ictal HFOs, are valuable in localizing the epileptogenic region. As a result, scalp interictal HFOs are valuable in epileptogenic region localization for presurgical evaluation of epilepsy patients. It holds great potential for reducing the long delay before patients can be referred for surgery. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

This paper proposes strategies for the driving and egress of a vehicle with a humanoid robot. To drive the vehicle, the RANSAC method was used to detect obstacles, and the Wagon model was used to control the steering and velocity of the vehicle with only a limited number of sensors which were installed on the humanoid robot. Additionally, a manual teleoperating method was used with the lane projection technique. For the egress motion, gain override and the Cartesian position/force control technique were used to interact with the vehicle structure. To overcome the disadvantages of a highly geared manipulator, a special technique was used that included modelled friction compensation and a non-complementary switching mode. DRC-HUBO+ used the proposed method to perform a vehicle driving and egress task in the DRC finals 2015.

Three-dimensional models have been used to aid medical diagnoses, using images generated by modalities like Magnetic Resonance Imaging. They can provide a more complete vision of objects since their depth is taken into account. Content-based Image Retrieval (CBIR) has also been used to aid the diagnosis. One important step in Three-dimensional CBIR (Model Retrieva) systems is the comparison between two models by using a set of features extracted and stored in a database. In this paper we present a novel method to compare two models, using the Bipartite graphs technique, with the aim to improve the retrieval precision. This technique retrieves 3D medical models of the left ventricle in order to aid the diagnosis of Congestive Heart Failure. Results showed that the novel method improved the precision by 10% when compared to the Similarity Function of Euclidean and Manhattan distance. These results confirmed that bipartite graph techniques can be used to improve the accuracy of Model Retrieval systems.

In this paper, the control problem is addressed for a hybrid PDE-ODE system that describes a nonuniform gantry crane system with constrained tension. A bottom payload hangs from the top gantry by connecting a flexible cable. The flexible cable is nonuniform due to the spatiotemporally varying tension applied to the system. Cooperative control laws are proposed and the Integral-Barrier Lyapunov Functions are employed for stability analysis of the closed-loop system. Adaption laws are developed for handling parametric uncertainties. The bounded stability is guaranteed through rigorous analysis without any simplification of the dynamics. In the end, numerical simulations are displayed to illustrate the performance of the proposed cooperative control.

Method of teaching and inheriting for skill is almost oral. It is not quantitative but qualitative. Quantitative inheriting of skill is difficult. In this paper, after tracking of a subject's skill motion using Microsoft Kinect, a subject's motion is visualized as the curved surface. A curved surface is fitted in the positions of a subject's joint, or the direction of trajectories. Expert and beginner perform swimming and karate motion. After the motions are tracked, the trajectories of joints are transformed to a curved surface. The difference of an action between an expert and a beginner is extracted by investigating curvatures and form on the visualized curved surface. Therefore, we expected that technical skill is transferred easily.
