A rapid antibiotic susceptibility test (AST) is desperately needed in clinical settings for fast and appropriate antibiotic administration. Traditional ASTs, which rely on cell culture, are not suitable for urgent cases of bacterial infection and antibiotic resistance owing to their relatively long test times. Here, we describe a novel AST called single-cell morphological analysis (SCMA) that can determine antimicrobial susceptibility by automatically analyzing and categorizing morphological changes in single bacterial cells under various antimicrobial conditions. The SCMA was tested with four Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute standard bacterial strains and 189 clinical samples from hospitals. The results were compared with the gold standard broth microdilution test. The SCMA results were obtained in less than 4 hours with 91.5% categorical agreement and 6.51% minor, 2.56% major, and 1.49% very major discrepancies. Thus, SCMA provides rapid and accurate antimicrobial susceptibility data.

In this paper, we present a P300 model for control of Cerebot - a mind-controlled humanoid robot, including a procedure of acquiring P300 signals, topographical distribution analysis of P300 signals, and a classification approach to identifying subjects’ mental activities regarding robot-walking behavior. We design two groups of image contexts to visually stimulate subjects when acquiring neural signals that are used to control a simulated or real NAO robot. Our study shows that the group of contexts using images of robot behavior delivers better performance. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Prior autonomous navigation systems focused on the demonstration of the technological feasibility. But as the technology evolves, improving user experience through learning expert's or individual's driving pattern emerges as a promising research direction. As a first step toward this goal, we investigate methods to learn from human demonstrations in urban scenarios without any environmental disturbances (traffic-free). We propose a path model that generates a reference path with smooth and peak-value-reduced curvature, and a parameterized speed model to be fitted by human driving data. Model parameters are then learned through regression methods, and certain statistical human driving patterns are revealed. The learned model is then evaluated by comparing the generated plan with the collected data by the same human driver.

The most common method for detection and correction of spelling errors in Korean Spelling and Grammar Checker (KSGC) depends largely on the linguistic rules. Rule-based methods yield very high precision, but extremely low recall because the constituents of the rules should be matched exactly. In this paper, we propose two novel methods that can loosen the case-particle constraints of KSGC’s existing rules, in order to improve the recall of Context-Sensitive Spelling Correction: (1) substitution of each case-particle by adding auxiliary particles or particle-compounds;(2) omission of case-particles. ©2014 International Conference on Artificial Intelligence, ICAI 2014 - WORLDCOMP *** right reserved.

Electroencephalography is a commonly used tool for presurgical evaluation of epilepsy patients. In this paper, we present a quantitative evaluation of interictal high frequency oscillations (HFOs) in scalp Electroencephalographies (EEGs) for epileptogenic region localization. We process multichannel EEGs using time-frequency spectral analysis in order to detect HFOs in each EEG channel. Comparison between the results of time-frequency analysis and visual assessment is performed to verify the reliability of time-frequency analysis. Later, t-test and Pearson correlation analysis are performed to analyze the relationships between ictal HFOs and interictal HFOs. The high correlations between interictal and ictal HFOs imply that interictal HFOs, like ictal HFOs, are valuable in localizing the epileptogenic region. As a result, scalp interictal HFOs are valuable in epileptogenic region localization for presurgical evaluation of epilepsy patients. It holds great potential for reducing the long delay before patients can be referred for surgery. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

This paper presents an improved method to teleoperate impedance of a robot based on surface electromyography (EMG) and test it experimentally. Based on a linear mapping between EMG amplitude and stiffness, an incremental stiffness extraction method is developed, which uses instantaneous amplitude identified from EMG in a high frequency band, compensating for non-linear residual error in the linear mapping and preventing muscle fatigue from affecting the control. Experiments on one joint of the Baxter robot are carried out to test the approach in a disturbance attenuation task, and to compare it with automatic human-like impedance adaptation. The experimental results demonstrate that the new human operated impedance method is successful at attenuating disturbance, and results similarly to as automatic disturbance attenuation, thus demonstrating its efficiency. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Immersive Virtual Musical Instruments (IVMIs) can be considered as the meeting between Music Technology and Virtual Reality. Being both musical instruments and elements of Virtual Environments, IVMIs require a transversal approach from their designers, in particular when the final aim is to play them in front of an audience, as part of a scenography. In this paper, we combine the main constraints of musical performances and Virtual Reality applications into a set of dimensions, meant to extensively describe IVMIs stage setups. A number of existing stage setups are then classified using these dimensions, explaining how they were used to showcase live virtual performances and discussing their scenographic level.
