Heavily-doped strained germanium (Ge) can emit light efficiently thanks to its pseudo direct band gap characteristic. This makes Ge a good candidate for on-chip monolithic light sources in silicon (Si) photonics systems. We propose fin-shaped Ge-Si heterojunction lightemitting diode (LED) with metal gates, which can enhance light emission by coupling with surface plasmon resonant modes and modulate light emission from the LED. We verify these two aspects through numerical analysis and device simulations. We develop the method to find the optimal device structure and specific device dimensions to maximize the spontaneous emission rate enhancement. Also we find that the LED can be modulated by a gate voltage bias. © 2014 Optical Society of America.

A one-dimensional link-node model was used to simulate water quality conditions in the tidally-influenced, deep water ship channel (DWSC) of the San Joaquin River located in Central California. The DWSC has been plagued with low dissolved oxygen (DO) conditions for decades and is currently a focus of restoration efforts. The model was calibrated using a six-year flow and water quality data set. Model simulations were run by removing the mass loads of each of the following major sources of oxygen depletion to determine the effects: elimination of the deepened ship channel (i.e., restore to its preexisting depth), elimination of import of oxygen-demanding substances (ODS) from the San Joaquin River watershed, elimination of import of ODS from the urban tributaries, and elimination of discharge of ODS from the City of Stockton regional wastewater control facility. The model results suggest that elimination of the deepened ship channel resulted in the best projected improvement relative to the modelled baseline with a predicted 55% improvement, while reducing ODS from the watershed would likely cause a 44% improvement. These results demonstrate that there are multiple contributing factors causing low DO in the DWSC and that removal or elimination of any single variable will not result in a complete resolution of low DO events.

Eutrophication of the San Joaquin River (SJR) has resulted in low dissolved oxygen (DO) conditions, which has led to a regulatory response and development of total maximum daily load (TMDL) allocations. Due to the dynamic nature of processes governing oxygen depletion in the SJR, a model was needed to help stakeholders understand the fate and transport of nutrients and oxygen-demanding substances that cause the low DO conditions. Here, the Watershed Analysis Risk Management Framework (WARMF) model was used to simulate nutrient removal and control strategies, accounting for the secondary effects of growth and transformation between sources and discharge. Using the management alternatives in the WARMF Consensus Module, simulations were run to test the global removal of nutrient inputs on downstream phytoplankton growth, a major contributor of oxygen demand in the SJR. In the simulations, removal of ammonia had the greatest impact on downstream phytoplankton, causing a 32% reduction, while removal of phosphate and nitrate caused reductions of 25% and 13%, respectively. When ammonia and nitrate were both removed, phytoplankton reduction was 62%. These model results suggest that nitrogen control programs would be more effective than phosphorus programs. Using the Data Module in WARMF, input files were modified to determine the impacts of individual tributaries and agricultural drainages. In each simulation, the contributing loads for individual inputs were removed while maintaining flow. According to the model output, the largest impact on phytoplankton occurred with the removal of mass loads from Salt Slough (32% less than baseline). The effect of removing the mass loads from Mud Slough had a slightly lower impact (26% less than baseline). The WARMF model proved useful for exploration of planning and management alternatives, providing an expert decision-making tool that is available to stakeholders.

As a result of this reported research, a simulation model to analyse the behaviour of carbon nanotube field effect transistors (CNTFETs) under non-ballistic conditions is explained and the effect of gate dielectric on the performance of CNTFETs has been explored in detail. For the first time, a thorough study of the combined non-ballistic effect on the performance of CNTFETs has been conducted and the output of the device has been analysed. It has been observed that a gate material with a high dielectric constant leads to higher on-state current and higher on and off state current ratio. In addition, the transconductance, total capacitance, charging energy, subthreshold swing (S), drain-induced barrier lowering (DIBL) and gain with respect to the dielectric constant have been observed and analysed. Transconductance and total capacitance increases by a significant amount, while charging energy and S decrease as the dielectric value increases. The DIBL and gain vary slightly as a higher value dielectric material is used as a gate. Furthermore, the results of this study have been plotted against previously reported ballistic outputs to provide a better perception of the deviation from ideal behaviour. At the same time, the outcomes of this analysis have been compared against some reported experimental values. © The Institution of engineering and Technology 2014.

Dirichlet tessellation for high-dimensional RSS clustering in Wi-Fi environment

The received signal strength (RSS) clustering has played a significant role in site surveying and data pre-processing for the location tracking in Wi-Fi environment. To this end, this paper presents a novel clustering algorithm to cluster the raw RSS vectors with large similarities in both the RSS and physical locations together. The clusters of RSS vectors are determined by the cells which are generated by the Dirichlet tessellation in a transformed low-dimensional space. Our algorithm consists of two steps. We first use the Laplacian embedding to transform the raw measurements into a low-dimensional space, while preserving the RSS and location neighborhood relations. Second, after the seeds of cells are carefully selected, we will tessellate the low-dimensional space by the Dirichlet cells to obtain the clustering results. The experiments conducted in an actual public Wi-Fi environment prove that our algorithm can achieve the smallest cluster scattering in both the RSS and locations compared with the existing affinity propagation clustering, K-means clustering and binary support vector classifier (SVC) algorithms. © 2014 ISSN 1881-803X.

The critical infrastructures of a nation including the power grid and the communication network are highly interdependent. Recognizing the need for a deeper understanding of the interdependency in a multi-layered network, significant efforts have been made by the research community in the last few years to achieve this goal. Accordingly a number of models have been proposed and analyzed. Unfortunately, most of the models are over simplified and, as such, they fail to capture the complex interdependency that exists between entities of the power grid and the communication networks involving a combination of conjunctive and disjunctive relations. To overcome the limitations of existing models, we propose a new model that is able to capture such complex interdependency relations. Utilizing this model, we provide techniques to identify the K most “vulnerable” nodes of an interdependent network. We show that the problem can be solved in polynomial time in some special cases, whereas for some others, the problem is NP-complete. We establish that this problem is equivalent to computation of a fixed point of a multilayered network system and we provide a technique for its computation utilizing Integer Linear programming. Finally, we evaluate the efficacy of our technique using real data collected from the power grid and the communication network that span the Maricopa County of Arizona.

Advances in technology have resulted in Internet-scale deployment of storage systems such as peer-to-peer storage and cloud storage, where data is distributed over multiple storage nodes in a networked environment. In these environments the storage nodes are often commodity machines and are susceptible to failure. The notion of fault domain, introduced by Microsoft Azure, captures the fault-tolerance aspects of a data center. A fault domain is defined as a set of servers all of which become inaccessible when a single fault (such as the failure of a switch or a router) occurs in the data center. As such a fault domain can be viewed as a spatially correlated or region based failure. In order to enhance reliability through redundancy, maximum distance separable (MDS) codes such as Reed-Solomon codes and (N, K) codings are utilized. In this paper we present analytical results demonstrating that the choice of the coding parameters N and K may have significant impact on storage that will be necessary to achieve reliability. We present a polynomial time algorithm for optimal storage allocation in a mesh network and we conduct extensive experimentation to evaluate the impact of the coding parameters N and K on the storage requirement to provide all region fault tolerance with varying size of the mesh and the fault region.

Studies on communication network robustness, though extensive, have primarily focused on standalone networks. However, real world communication networks do not operate in isolation, but instead are part of complex interdependent ecosystems that function together as a comprehensive symbiotic unit. For instance, communication networks of today are highly dependent on the power infrastructure and hence, any efforts to improve the robustness of communication networks must necessarily take into account the vulnerabilities of the power infrastructure and their shared interdependencies. For example, event-induced failures (failures caused by natural disasters or terrorist attacks), on any of these two infrastructures can trigger further failures (triggered failures) into the system through a cascading process due to the interdependencies between the networks. In such an interdependent system where an event induced failure can cascade and result in a much larger combined (event-induced plus triggered) failure, it may be imperative to identify the original event-induced failure for the purpose of post fault diagnostics, or for pre-cascade network strengthening. This ascertainment of event-induced original failure, or the Root Cause of Failure, from combined failures in interdependent Power-Communication networks is the main focus of this paper. We model interdependencies between the two infrastructures using the recently proposed Implicative Interdependency Model. We introduce the Root Cause of Failure problem, and prove it to be NP-Complete. We also provide optimal solutions using ILP, and provide an O(ln(n)) approximation algorithm. Finally, we validate our analytical results through experiments in the power communication network of Maricopa County, Arizona.
