In this paper a novel approach is proposed to recognise different objects invariant to their translation and rotation by utilising a tactile sensor attached to a robotic arm. As the sensor is small compared to the tested objects, the robot needs to access those objects multiple times at different positions and is prone to move or rotate them. This inevitably increases difficulty in object recognition during manipulations. To solve this problem, it is proposed to extract tactile translation and rotation invariant local features to represent objects;a dictionary of k words is therefore learned by k-means unsupervised learning and a histogram codebook is then used to identify objects. The proposed system has been validated by classifying real objects with data from an off-the-shelf tactile sensor. The average overall accuracy of 91.2% has been achieved with only 10 touches and a dictionary size of 50 clusters.

Poultry scientists and researchers have been studying the possibility of identifying bird stress from the vocal patterns of broiler flocks. Being able to identify stress or sickness in a flock can lead to early interventions. However, as the flock ages, the vocal properties change. This paper presents the preliminary results of an age classification technique using the C4.5 decision three algorithm using Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs), audio frequencies commonly used from speech processing. Sound data was collected continuously over a 61-day period. The flock was composed of 400 Cobb500™ broilers raised under research conditions mimicking commercial operations. Results of the data processing and the C4.5 classification indicate that age can be determined within one day of error with 70% frequency. This process of determining age of a flock is intended to be the first step in a larger comprehensive system for identifying the condition of the flock and assessing animal welfare.

Video-sharing websites have begun to provide easy access to user-generated video content. How do we find what we want to view among the huge video database? When people search for a video, they may want to know whether the video evokes a certain emotional sensation. The evoked emotion is one of the important factors we consider when we select a video. One of the key concepts of evoked emotions from videos: the evoked emotions are different for each scene and for each viewer. Considering these differences, we obtained human-evoked emotions from 33 videos. We used these emotions to estimate the multiple emotions evoked by each scene of the videos. Using a computational model of emotion estimation based on mid-level visual features, we found that, in individual videos, the same scene evoked multiple emotions. Our results show that a video evoked different emotions from different people. A computational model might deliver probabilistic multiple-evoked emotions from video analyses. © CogSci *** rights reserved.

Genetic adaptation to external stimuli occurs through the combined action of mutation and selection. A central problem in genetics is to identify loci responsive to specific selective pressures. Over the last two decades, many tests have been proposed to identify genomic signatures of natural selection. However, the power of these tests changes unpredictably from one dataset to another, with no single dominant method. We build upon recent work that connects many of these tests in a common framework, by describing how positive selection strongly impacts the observed site frequency spectrum (SFS). Many of the proposed tests quantify the skew in SFS to predict selection. Here, we show that the skew depends on many parameters, including the selection coefficient, and time since selection. Moreover, for each of the different regimes of positive selection, informative features of the scaled SFS can be learned from simulated data and applied to population-scale variation data. Using support vector machines, we develop a test that is effective over all selection regimes. On simulated datasets, our test outperforms existing ones over the entire parameter space. We apply our test to variation data from Drosophila melanogaster populations adapted to hypoxia, and identify new loci that were missed by previous approaches, but strengthen the role of the Notch pathway in hypoxia tolerance. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

This paper describes a novel mobility assistive device under development in the Egypt-Japan University of science and Technology (E-JUST). The proposed system can help patients who do not have enough physical strength on the lower limbs during sit to stand due to aging, diseases such as polymyositis and myopathy, and joint replacement surgery complications. It can follow the natural pattern of human motion during sit to stand providing assistance force under the shoulder. The overall device is compact and employees a parallel mechanism which provide more stiffness. Several experiments were carried out in a VICON room to calculate the human motion posture while sit to stand motion in addition estimate the trajectory of the end effector during assisting. computer simulation was built to verify the performance of the proposed system with the reference trajectory. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper, we study the problem of making multiple agents spread out equidistantly on a circle. The proposed solution is a new Kuramoto-like model for multirobot coordination, in which the standard sine-terms have been replaced by cosines. This new interaction model enables the balanced deployment of agents on a circle, while only taking into account the local information of each agent's two neighbors on a cycle graph. This means that individual agents do not need to know the (relative) states of all agents nor how many other agents are indeed present in the network. We illustrate the operation of the proposed protocol in simulation as well as extend it to a nonlinear scenario by optimizing over the coupling weights.

Branched nanowire (NW) heterostructures have recently been attracted considerable attention for solar water splitting and clean hydrogen production due to their unique properties such as nanoscale integration of different functional materials, greatly enhanced junction and surface area, enhanced gas evolution efficiency, broadband light absorption, etc. Moreover, branched NWs can be fabricated using facile and scalable fabrication methods such as hydrothermal or solvothermal growth methods. In this presentation, we show branched NWs of different compositions for core (or trunk) and branch NWs which were fabricated with facile and low-cost synthesis methods using cheap, non-toxic, and earth abundant materials including Si, CuO, Cu2O, ZnO, TiO2, and Fe2O3. The branched NW structures and the heterostructures' interfaces are investigated in detail using different characterization techniques such as SEM/HRSEM, TEM/HRTEM, STEM/HRSETM, etc. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) performances including photocurrent turn-on potential, photocurrent, solar conversion efficiency, and incident photon-to-current efficiency (IPCE) are studied systematically and optimized, based on different core and branch NW dimensions, for each specific branched NW heterostructure to provide efficient water splitting in a neutral medium. The electrode stability of different branched NWs is also investigated and long-term stability of over one day or several hours using a thin passivation layer or robust branched NWs are presented. The achieved results pave the way for accomplishing spontaneous overall solar water splitting for clean, efficient, cost-effective and durable solar hydrogen generation at large scales.

In outdoor environments shadows are common. These typically strong visual features cause considerable change in the appearance of a place, and therefore confound vision-based localisation approaches. In this paper we describe how to convert a colour image of the scene to a greyscale invariant image where pixel values are a function of underlying material property not lighting. We summarise the theory of shadow invariant images and discuss the modelling and calibration issues which are important for non-ideal off-the-shelf colour cameras. We evaluate the technique with a commonly used robotic camera and an autonomous car operating in an outdoor environment, and show that it can outperform the use of ordinary greyscale images for the task of visual localisation.

This paper addresses the problem of automatically estimating the relative pose between a push-broom LIDAR and a camera without the need for artificial calibration targets or other human intervention. Further we do not require the sensors to have an overlapping field of view, it is enough that they observe the same scene but at different times from a moving platform. Matching between sensor modalities is achieved without feature extraction. We present results from field trials which suggest that this new approach achieves an extrinsic calibration accuracy of millimeters in translation and deci-degrees in rotation.
