In this paper, we have demonstrated a technology for encoding of liquid capped microcapsule and dispensing thousands of heterogeneous encoded liquid drops into microwell array with only a single pipetting step, which would normally requires thousands of individual pipetting. With our technology, we can take advantages of both high coding capacity and liquid-liquid reaction, which is impossible in conventional droplet and bead-based assay platforms.

This paper proposes a general learning framework for robots to learn behaviors through imitation and interaction. A modified codebook based method is used for robots to segment and recognize new objects in the environment. Task related semantic information is learned by robots through the speech communication with humans. Dynamic Movement Primitive method is used to generate similar behaviors to complete similar but slightly different tasks. Experimental results are given to verify the effectiveness of this framework. © 2012 IEEE.

Heart wall myofibers wind as helices around the ventricles, strengthening them in a manner analogous to the reinforcement of concrete cylindrical columns by spiral steel cables [Richart FE, et al. (1929) Univ of Illinois, Eng Exp Stn Bull 190]. A multitude of such fibers, arranged smoothly and regularly, contract and relax as an integrated functional unit as the heart beats. To orchestrate this motion, fiber tangling must be avoided and pumping should be efficient. Current models of myofiber orientation across the heart wall suggest groupings into sheets or bands, but the precise geometry of bundles of myofibers is unknown. Here we show that this arrangement takes the form of a special minimal surface, the generalized helicoid [Blair DE, Vanstone JR (1978) Minimal Submanifolds and Geodesics 13-16], closing the gap between individual myofibers and their collective wall structure. The model holds across species, with a smooth variation in its three curvature parameters within the myocardial wall providing tight fits to diffusion magnetic resonance images from the rat, the dog, and the human. Mathematically it explains how myofibers are bundled in the heart wall while economizing fiber length and optimizing ventricular ejection volume as they contract. The generalized helicoid provides a unique foundation for analyzing the fibrous composite of the heart wall and should therefore find applications in heart tissue engineering and in the study of heart muscle diseases. An object recognition model with top-down prediction and context

Based on the trickle-up and trickle-down process in primate visual pathway, an ideal model for object recognition is researched. Firstly, the information of the low spatial frequency are extracted and passed to high visual cortex, the bank of the objects in memory is activated by this input, so the prediction of the possible candidate objects is pulled out. Then, the information of high spatial frequency, which keeps the invariability and selectivity of an object, is gained through the trickle-up process. With the top-down prediction, the context and the detailed information from trickle-up pathway, the object is recognized by Bayes inference. The performance of the proposed model is proved by several experiments.

We propose an approach for dependence tree structure learning via copula. A nonparametric algorithm for copula estimation is presented. Then a Chow-Liu like method based on dependence measure via copula is proposed to estimate maximum spanning bivariate copula associated with bivariate dependence relations. The main advantage of the approach is that learning with empirical copula focuses on dependence relations among random variables, without the need to know the properties of individual variables as well as without the requirement to specify parametric family of entire underlying distribution for individual variables. Experiments on two real-application data sets show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

We present a motion planner for autonomous on-road driving, especially on highways. It adapts the idea of a on-road state lattice. A focused search is performed in the previously identified region in which the optimal trajectory is most likely to exist. The main contribution of this paper is a computationally efficient planner which handles dynamic environments generically. The Dynamic programming algorithm is used to explore in spatiotemporal space and find a coarse trajectory solution first that encodes desirable maneuvers. Then a focused trajectory search is conducted using the "generate-and-test" approach, and the best trajectory is selected based on the smoothness of the trajectory. Analysis shows that our scheme provides a principled way to focus trajectory sampling, thus greatly reduces the search space. Simulation results show robust performance in several challenging scenarios. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

We exploit the notion of SWM- (simultaneous-weak-measurements)-induced quantum state reduction, enabling the use of measurement backaction to produce the desired quantum states. The probabilistic generation of maximally entangled Bell states and the |GHZ〉 (Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger) state are then performed as a consequence of this notion. By combining SWM-induced quantum state reduction with feedback control, we are able to deterministically generate any desired Bell state as well as the |GHZ〉 state, without the knowledge of the initial state. The control-computation time is compensated for by the delay time in the time-delay bang-bang control, through which the real-time implementation of the control scheme is guaranteed. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is illustrated numerically.

This paper describes a novel method for determining the extrinsic calibration parameters between 2D and 3D LIDAR sensors with respect to a vehicle base frame. To recover the calibration parameters we attempt to optimize the quality of a 3D point cloud produced by the vehicle as it traverses an unknown, unmodified environment. The point cloud quality metric is derived from Rényi Quadratic Entropy and quantifies the compactness of the point distribution using only a single tuning parameter. We also present a fast approximate method to reduce the computational requirements of the entropy evaluation, allowing unsupervised calibration in vast environments with millions of points. The algorithm is analyzed using real world data gathered in many locations, showing robust calibration performance and substantial speed improvements from the approximations.

Biometrics recognition systems implemented in a realworld environment often have to be content with adverse biometrics signal acquisition which can vary greatly in this environment. This includes acoustic noise that can contaminate speech signals or artifacts that can alter heart sound signals. In order to overcome these recognition errors, researchers all over the world apply various methods such as normalization, feature extraction, classification to address this issue. Recently, combining biometrics modalities has proven to be an effective strategy to improve the performance of biometrics systems. The approach in this paper is based on biometrics recognition which used the heart sound signal as a feature that can't be easily copied The Mel- Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) is used as a feature vector and vector quantization (VQ) is used as the matching model algorithm. A simple yet highly reliable method is introduced for biometric applications. Experimental results show that the recognition rate of the Heart Sound Speaker identification (HS-SI) model is 81.9% while (S-SI) the rate for the Speech Speaker Independent model is 99.3% for a 21 client, 40 imposter database. Heart sound- speaker verification (HS-SV) provides an average EER of 17.8% while the average EER for the speech speaker verification model (S-SV) is 3.39%. In order to reach a higher security level an alternative to the above approach, which is based on multimodal and a fusion technique, is implemented into the system. The best performance of the work is based on simple-sum score fusion with a pricewise-linear normalization technique which provides an EER of 0.69%.
