In this paper, we show that the tracking performance of a hard disk drive actuator can be improved by using two adaptive neural networks, each of which is tailored for a specific task. The first neural network utilizes accelerometer signal to detect external vibrations, and compensates for its effect on hard disk drive position via feedforward action. In particular, no information on the plant, sensor and disturbance dynamics is needed in the design of this neural network disturbance compensator. The second neural network, designed to compensate for the pivot friction, uses a signum activation function to introduce nonlinearities inherent to pivot friction, thus reducing the neural network¿s burden of expectation. The stability of the proposed scheme is analyzed by the Lyapunov criterion. Simulation results show that the tracking performance of the hard disk drives can be improved significantly with the use of both neural networks compared to the case without compensation, or when only one of the networks is activated.

When deprived of sight humans adapt and use other senses for navigation. Most rely on touch (long cane), but some use auditory perception. We have observed a blind teenager echolocating using sounds (clicks) he makes with his mouth. More commonly, an ultrasonic sensor is used as a navigational aid to scan the path and environment. The echoes blind people perceive are interpreted by each individual to form an auditory scene where clear paths and obstacles are identified. With this information, the blind user threads his/her way safely through the space scanned. The work we describe here seeks to mimic a blind person using a sonar navigational aid to traverse a path or corridor. We are using a commercially available ultrasonic mobility aid to isonify and capture echoes from a corridor, we then attempt to correlate these to the geometric features of the corridor, as we perceive them. Our aim is to develop a perception system, which is capable of interpreting, in real time the echoes to discern the geometric features of the environment, so that this data can be used to navigate a robot through it.

WS-Policy4MASC is an XML language for specification of policies for run-time Web service management (monitoring and control) activities executed by the Manageable and Adaptable Services Compositions (MASC) middleware. Among its original contributions are specfication of diverse business values (benefits or costs, tangible or intangible, agreed or possible, absolute or relative) and specification of various control strategies maximizing different business values (e.g., only agreed intangible benefits). To facilitate development of Web service systems that can be managed with WS-Policy4MASC and the MASC middleware and to improve alignment between run-time management activities and design-time models, we developed novel UML profiles for WS-Policy4MASC. Their original contributions are in improved support for: a) specification of run-time management activities and business values within design-time models, b) automatic creation of run-time management policies from design-time models, c) feedback of run-time management information values into analysis of design-time models. We validated our solutions on detailed examples.

Sixty-two years after the first photos of earth taken by a camera aboard a V-2 rocket in October, 1946, and forty-eight years since the first CORONA satellite images were captured, the status of remote sensing research and applications within the African continent has made dramatic progress. Many African countries now have remote sensing research centers, within government agencies, research institutes and universities. Some countries in Africa currently have earth observing and/or telecommunications satellites in orbit and/or have such assets in various planning stages. The authors document such progress, in addition to the constraints to further applications of remote sensing for sustainable development in Africa, with special reference to data distribution constraints. Moreover, the authors address the urgency for bandwidth improvements within the African continent, so as to enable sustainable development initiatives to benefit from advances in high performance computing, required for ab initio near-real-time analysis of satellite-data. Such capabilities, it is argued, are propaedeutic for time-critical initiatives, such as vulnerability assessment, disaster preparedness and mitigation, emergency response, humanitarian assistance and post-calamity reconstruction, associated with a wide array of biogenic and anthropogenic disasters. Case studies of advances in infrastructure for satellite remote sensing and high performance computing, with implications for sustainable development in Africa, are provided from Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa.

Geo-specific road databases are sometimes necessary for driving simulation studies. However, manually creating them is very time consuming. One of the reasons is that a real road can have non-uniform cross sections due to irregular shaped road boundaries. Additionally, in the UCF (University of Central Florida) driving simulator system, the road database format requires identification of repeatable cross sections, also a labor intensive process. Even though some commercial software applications, such as the MultiGen Road Tool have road modeling functions, roads with non-uniform cross-sectional profiles are still hard to model.

Intrusion detection is the process of monitoring the events occurring in a computer system or network and analyzing them for signs of intrusions, defined as attempts to compromise the confidentiality, integrity, availability, or to bypass the security mechanisms of a computer or net-work. This paper proposes the development of an Intrusion Detection program (IDP) which could detect known attack patterns. An IDP does not eliminate the use of any preventive mechanism but it works as the last defensive mechanism in securing the system. Three variants of genetic programming techniques namely Linear Ge-netic programming (LGP), Multi-Expression programming (MEP) and Gene Expression programming (GEP) were evaluated to design IDP. Several indices are used for comparisons and a detailed analysis of MEP technique is provided. Empirical results reveal that genetic programming technique could play a major role in developing IDP, which are light weight and accurate when compared to some of the conventional intrusion detection systems based on machine learning paradigms.
