Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites offer very high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios. As a result, the aerospace industry is making a major effort to incorporate an increasing number of composite materials into various components and structures. However, machining of FRP composites is one of the most difficult and least understood areas in manufacturing technology. Thus, it is necessary to include machining and tool regimes of FRP composites into manufacturing curricula, especially at schools in regions of the country where significant aerospace industry exist. This new topic has been applied into various programs such as Machine Manufacturing Technology program at Portland Community College (PCC) and Mechanical engineering program at Washington State University Vancouver (WSUV). This report focuses on all aspects of these newly developed course materials including course content and student feedback. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

Knowledge elicitation is difficult for expert systems that are based on probability theory. The elicitation of probabilities for a probabilistic model requires a lot of time and interaction between the knowledge engineer and the expert. Druzdzel and van der Gaag [5] have proposed a theoretical framework that would allow the use of multiple types of probabilistic information for elicitation of Bayesian networks. This framework has been used as a starting point for the implementation of a non-invasive elication method. © 2007 ACM.

In this paper, we present a DEA approach to measure the relative efficiency of applicants to the graduate programs in engineering. The proposed performance criteria are determined depending on the current evaluation criteria in the school of engineering at the University of Bridgeport. Current mammographic screeningfor breast cancer is less effective for younger women. To complement mammography for premenopausal women, we investigated the feasibility screening test using 98 blood serum proteins. Because the data set was very noisy and contained only weak features, we used a classifier designed for noisy data: decision fusion. Decision fusion outperformed both a support vector machine (SVM) and linear regression with forward stepwise feature selection on all three two-class classification tasks: normal tissue vs. cancer, normal tissue vs. benign lesions, and benign lesions vs. cancer. Decision fusion detected cancer moderately well (AUC=0.84 on normal vs. cancer), demonstrating promise as a screening tool. Decision fusion also detected benign lesions similarly well (AUC=0.83 on normal vs. benign lesions) and was the only classifier to achieve any success in separating benign from malignant lesions (AUC=0.64 on benign vs. cancer). The classification results suggest that the assayed proteins are more indicative of a secondary effect, such as immune response, rather than specific for breast cancer. In conclusion, the decision fusion classifier demonstrated some promise in detecting breast lesions and outperformed other classifiers, especially for the very noisy classification problem of distinguishing benign from malignant lesions. ©2007 IEEE.

A university that develops a program with the capability to launch, chase, and recover helium-filled high-altitude balloon satellites (BalloonSats) enables a number of undergraduate research possibilities. The program faculty and the undergraduates served can also form the engine of an exciting and effective vehicle to perform K-12 outreach related to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Nearly identical to weather balloons, low-weight BalloonSats can affordably carry student experiments literally to the edge of space. When the outreach effort is extended and a partnership between the university program and a K-12 classroom forms, the outreach can be transformed from a series of "fire and forget" activities into a genuine, standards-based, educational component. This paper describes the collaboration between Oregon Institute of Technology's (OIT's) BalloonSat program (LaunchOIT) and Ferguson Elementary school in Klamath Falls, Oregon (Ferguson school). LaunchOIT is an affiliate of Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium's1(OSGCs) "LaunchOregon" BalloonSat program. The paper presents some history relating to LaunchOIT, the enabling underpinnings of the OSGC, the OIT-Ferguson school collaboration structure (including some data related to student participants and performance), the benefits of the program collaboration, and how the program looks to sustain itself, particularly considering the auspices of NASA's educational mission as exercised through the National Space Grant College and Fellowship program2(Space Grant) efforts. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

In this paper, we describe a method for coordinating multiple robots in a pursuit-evasion domain. We examine the problem of multiple robotic pursuers attempting to locate a non-adversarial mobile evader in an indoor environment. Unlike many other approaches to this problem, our method seeks to minimize expected time of capture rather than guaranteeing capture. This allows us to examine the performance of our algorithm in complex and cluttered environments where guaranteed capture is difficult or impossible with limited pursuers. We present a probabilistic formulation of the problem, discretize the environment, and define cost heuristics for use in planning. We then propose a scalable algorithm using an entropy cost heuristic that searches possible movement paths to determine coordination strategies for the robotic pursuers. We present simulated results describing the performance of our algorithm against state of the art alternatives in a complex office environment. Our algorithm successfully reduces capture time with limited pursuers in an environment beyond the scope of many other approaches.

Accurate base-assignment in repeat regions of a whole genome shotgun assembly is an unsolved problem. Since reads in repeat regions cannot be easily attributed to a unique location in the genome, current assemblers may place these reads arbitrarily. As a result, the base-assignment error rate in repeats is likely to be much higher than that in the rest of the genome. We developed an iterative algorithm, EULER-AIR, that is able to correct base-assignment errors in finished genome sequences in public databases. The Wolbachia genome is among the best finished genomes. Using this genome project as an example, we demonstrated that EULER-AIR can 1) discover and correct base-assignment errors, 2) provide accurate read assignments, 3) utilize finishing reads for accurate base-assignment and 4) provide guidance for designing finishing experiments. In the genome of Wolbachia, EULER-AIR found 16 positions with ambiguous base-assignment and two positions with erroneous bases. Besides Wolbachia, many other genome sequencing projects have significantly fewer finishing reads and, hence, are likely to contain more base-assignment errors in repeats. We demonstrate that EULER-AIR is a software tool that can be used to find and correct base-assignment errors in a genome assembly project. © 2007 IEEE.

The electrical engineering program at the Milwaukee school of engineering (MSOE) has integrated a bilateral faculty teaching component into its international student exchange program. Considerable flexibility was needed to adjust to faculty availability and the major differences in academic calendars between the two institutions. Specifically, MSOE is a private institution on a quarter system and its partner university is the Lübeck University of Applied sciences in Lübeck, Germany which utilizes the semester system and is a state university. Among the problems that needed to be overcome is that the semester versus quarter systems simply didn't align and neither institution has the resources to allow faculty absences for an entire academic year. At the Lübeck University of Applied sciences the MSOE faculty generally teach a short intensive 2 week course at the end of the spring semester. An appropriate number of credits and associated grade are given and entered on both university transcripts. The Lübeck university faculty visit MSOE in the fall quarter to participate in the project defense of their own students who perform their Diplom Arbeit (senior thesis project) at a company generally in the Milwaukee region. During the visit the Lübeck faculty also provide a series of special topic lectures in various courses depending on the expertise of the faculty member. The benefits of the faculty exchange are many. Not just does the experience foster a stronger bond to the partner abroad, but the presence of the faculty serves to assure the students that the home institution is paying attention to their welfare and academic progress. The most essential thing we have come to believe is that while good academics are essential to a program, it is the relationships between the people involved in the program that determines a truly successful international program. The faculty exchange aspect has become a lynchpin of our exchange program. © American Society for engineering Ed

A fuzzy inference logic system is proposed for gas turbine engine fault isolation. The gas path measurements used for fault isolation are exhaust gas temperature, low and high rotor speed, and fuel flow. The fuzzy inference logic uses rules developed from a model of performance influence coefficients to isolate engine faults while accounting for uncertainty in gas path measurements. Inputs to the fuzzy inference logic system are measurement deviations of gas path parameters which are transferred directly from the ECM (Engine Control Monitoring) program and outputs are engine module faults. The proposed fuzzy inference logic system is tested using simulated data developed from the ECM trend plot reports and the results show that the proposed fuzzy inference logic system isolates module faults with high accuracy rate in the environment of high level of uncertainty.

In this paper we explore the integration among geographical information systems (GIS) and agent based simulation tools. An agent-based geographical information system (ABGIS) could be characterized as a kind of system integrating features commonly found in geographical information system with the features of agent-based simulation tools. ABGIS would give to scientists and researches, not necessarily computer experts, access to powerful simulation tools and an environment that is an excellent metaphor to represent our spatio-temporal world. With ABGIS we could explore the dynamics of spatiotemporal systems, and particularly but not exclusively, complex systems.
