Molecular dynamics simulations of the mechanical strength of Si∕Si3N4 interfaces

Molecular dynamics simulations are performed on parallel computers to investigate the crystalline Si(111)∕Si3N4(0001) interface that is modeled as an eight-component system. The average total energy per particle and the average kinetic energy per particle of the subsystems are monitored during the preparation of the system. The Young’s modulus of the interface is compared with that of the silicon part alone and that of the silicon-nitride film, respectively. The results for one extended simulation feature a crack in the silicon-nitride film and dislocated atoms in silicon below the crack. Simulations at rates of strain ranging from 0.00125to0.05ps−1 show that for lower strain rates, the systems stretched faster reach their ultimate strength at a higher strain value than those that were stretched more slowly. At the highest strain rates, however, the failure mechanisms change qualitatively indicative of a more ductile behavior.

This paper presents MODENA, an architecture for scientific models management using Computational Grid platform. This architecture is comprised of two systems: ModManager and ModRunner. ModManager deals with knowledge management about scientific models, acting as a scientific models library allowing for cataloguing, searching, reutilization and generation of new models. To achieve this, a metamodel is proposed to classify models, in order to support the organization, searching and retrieving of models. ModRunner manages the execution of models in a Grid environment allowing for model composition to generate a scientific Grid Workflow to be executed by distributed services offered by Grid Services. An initial prototype of ModManager is presented.

The Baylor In Maastricht (BIM) Summer Study Abroad program is a 41-day study abroad program in the Netherlands. Baylor In Maastricht is a summer program that is sponsored by the school of engineering and science of Baylor University in Waco, Texas, in conjunction with the Universiteit Maastricht, in the Netherlands. The program gives engineering and computer science students an opportunity to take two Baylor courses (six hours), while also providing an abroad experience in the heart of Europe. It also answers the charge given four years ago by the Dean of the school of engineering and computer science to get our students out of the building! This paper will discuss the goals and objectives of such a program, and will chronicle the design, development, and execution of the resulting study abroad program. We will explore, in depth, the number and type of participants, the details of trip planning and organization, the decision on which courses to offer, planned weekend group trips, the facilities and support of the Universiteit Maastricht, and accommodations. This paper will also discuss the execution of the first two study abroad programs to Maastricht, the Netherlands - what worked, what didn't work, what was good, where we have improved. A summary of the student evaluations from the program is included. © 2004 IEEE.

The miniaturization of chemical synthesis and analysis systems has gained enormous interest recently. In particular, the important progress has been achieved in the area of micro-fluidic devices for biomolecular analysis. These micro synthesis and analytical devices offer many advantages, for example, labor and cost savings over the conventional systems. We have developed two different methods for micro peptide synthesis on a glass chip surface, spotting method and photolithography method. We have modified the glass surfaces in various ways for the effective pep-tide synthesis and high-throughput screenings and proved that hydrophilic polymer modified surfaces are suitable for peptide synthesis and bioassays. Tissue dissection is an important procedure in surgical simulation systems. Dissection involves cutting through and separating the tissue after a cut. In this paper, we use a surface mass-spring model to simulate virtual dissection by progressive subdivision and re-meshing. We introduce novel algorithms to generate interior structures that show the cutting result generated by the interaction between instrument and model. In addition, a novel data structure for object representation after the cutting action is proposed which allows the original soft object to be divided and a portion manipulated away. The dissection environment can support a number of user interface devices which can manipulate different representation of virtual instruments. These techniques are being integrated into a training environment for both open and minimally invasive surgery.

System dynamics of supply chain network organization structure

Information technology is providing manufacturers with additional flexibility with regard to their supply chain network choices. Our research studies supply chain network organization structures categorized by the organic and mechanistic management control structures. The structural impacts on cost and fill rate performance are studied in two-echelon and two-supply-chain network organization models under different market coordination conditions using system dynamic simulations. Our results show significant effects of demand and network structural factors, and their interactions, on these measures. As demand becomes dynamic, the cooperative interaction model, where supply chains cooperate to satisfy customer demand, is found to have better system performance than the competitive supply chain model. The analysis also suggests that increasing the responsiveness at the downstream plant is particularly important to the overall system performance improvement.

Some of manufacturing tasks such as sawing task often require continuous impulsive motion. In case of sawing task, such impulsive motions can be observed between the teeth of the saw and the object being sawn. The amount of the external impulse exerted on the object is treated as an important control parameter in the sawing task. The purpose of this work is to show the efficacy of sawing task by using a dual-arm. For this, a new concept of effective mass is introduced to model the impact phenomenon in the sawing task. Using this concept, the external impulse model of sawing tasks is suggested. The optimal sawing region is identified in which the amount of external impulse is maximized. It is demonstrated through simulation and experiment that the dual-arm exhibits better sawing performance over a single arm in aspects of external impulse.
