The miniaturization of chemical synthesis and analysis systems has gained enormous interest recently. In particular, the important progress has been achieved in the area of micro-fluidic devices for biomolecular analysis. These micro synthesis and analytical devices offer many advantages, for example, labor and cost savings over the conventional systems. We have developed two different methods for micro peptide synthesis on a glass chip surface, spotting method and photolithography method. Tissue dissection is an important procedure in surgical simulation systems. Dissection involves cutting through and separating the tissue after a cut. In this paper, we use a surface mass-spring model to simulate virtual dissection by progressive subdivision and re-meshing. We introduce novel algorithms to generate interior structures that show the cutting result generated by the interaction between instrument and model. In addition, a novel data structure for object representation after the cutting action is proposed which allows the original soft object to be divided and a portion manipulated away. The dissection environment can support a number of user interface devices which can manipulate different representation of virtual instruments. These techniques are being integrated into a training environment for both open and minimally invasive surgery.

Information technology is providing manufacturers with additional flexibility with regard to their supply chain network choices. Our research studies supply chain network organization structures categorized by the organic and mechanistic management control structures. The structural impacts on cost and fill rate performance are studied in two-echelon and two-supply-chain network organization models under different market coordination conditions using system dynamic simulations. Our results show significant effects of demand and network structural factors, and their interactions, on these measures. As demand becomes dynamic, the cooperative interaction model, where supply chains cooperate to satisfy customer demand, is found to have better system performance than the competitive supply chain model. The analysis also suggests that increasing the responsiveness at the downstream plant is particularly important to the overall system performance improvement.

Some of manufacturing tasks such as sawing task often require continuous impulsive motion. In case of sawing task, such impulsive motions can be observed between the teeth of the saw and the object being sawn. The amount of the external impulse exerted on the object is treated as an important control parameter in the sawing task. The purpose of this work is to show the efficacy of sawing task by using a dual-arm. For this, a new concept of effective mass is introduced to model the impact phenomenon in the sawing task. Using this concept, the external impulse model of sawing tasks is suggested. The optimal sawing region is identified in which the amount of external impulse is maximized. It is demonstrated through simulation and experiment that the dual-arm exhibits better sawing performance over a single arm in aspects of external impulse.

Taking Shanghai science and Technology Museum as the operation target, the robot named skycleaner which is totally actuated by pneumatic cylinders and is sucked to the glass walls with vacuum suckers is presented. In order to solve the problems of lower stiffness and the nonlinear movement characteristic of the pneumatic system, a method of segment and variable bang-bang controller is proposed to implement the accurate control of the position servo system using the principle of pneumatic pulse width-modulation (PWM). Testing results show that the controller can effectively improve the control quality. This implies that the method can meet the requirements of realization.
