Semantic analysis for data preparation of web usage mining

As the web usage patterns from clients are getting more complex, simple sessionizations based on time and navigation-oriented heuristics have been restricted to exploit various kinds of rule discovering methods. In this paper, we present semantic analysis approach based on semantic session reconstruction as finding out semantic outliers from web log data. Web directory service is applied to enrich semantics to web logs, categorizing them to all possible hierarchical paths. In order to detect the candidate set of session identifiers, semantic factors like semantic mean, deviation, and distance matrix are established. Eventually, each semantic session is obtained based on nested repetition of top-down partitioning and evaluation process. For experiment, we applied this ontology-oriented heuristics to sessionize the access log files for one week from IRCache. Compared with time-oriented heuristics, more than 48% of sessions were additionally detected by semantic outlier analysis. It means that we can conceptually track the behavior of users tending to easily change their intentions and interests, or simultaneously try to search various kinds of information on the web.

This paper presents a modified MSEA (multi-level successive elimination algorithm) which gives less computational complexity. We predict a motion estimation error using the norms at the already processed levels in the MSEA scheme and then decide on if the following levels should be proceeded using the predicted result. We skip the computation at the following levels where the processing is no longer meaningful. At this point, skipping the processing gives computational gain compared to the conventional MSEA scheme. For the purpose of predicting the norm at each level, we first show the theoretical analysis of the norm at each level and then verify the analysis by experiments. Based on the analysis, a new motion estimation method is proposed and its performance is evaluated. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

This paper presents a fast full search algorithm for motion estimation. The proposed method is an extended version of the rate constrained successive elimination algorithm (RSEA) for multiple reference frame applications. We will show that motion estimation for the reference images temporally preceding the first reference image can be less intensive in computation compared with that for the first reference image. For computational reduction, we will drive a new condition to lead the smaller number of candidate blocks for the best matched block. Simulation results explain that our method reduces computation complexity although it has the same quality as RSEA. © Springer-Verlag 2004.

In this paper, we investigate the similarity search methods for large video data sets that are the collection of video clips. A video clip, a sequence of video frames describing a particular event, is represented by a sequence in a multidimensional data space. Each video clip is partitioned into video segments considering temporal relationship among frames, and then similar segments of the clip are grouped into video clusters. Based on these video segments and clusters, we define similarity functions and present two similarity search methods: the HR (hyper-rectangle)-search and the RP (representative point)- search. Experiments on synthetic sequences as well as real video clips show the effectiveness of our proposed methods. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

We have developed an interactive visualization software for an immersive 3D virtual environment system, which generates stereoscopic images from huge human volume datasets in real-time using an improved volume visualization technique. Our software utilizes a CAVE system to reconstruct such huge volume datasets as the Visible Human and the Visible Korean Human, produced by NLM and KISTI, respectively. In stead of using the isosurfacing and 3D texture-mapping based volume rendering methods that easily slow down as data sizes increase, our system exploits a new image-based rendering technique to guarantee the effective interactive visualization. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

In this paper, we propose a novel packet scheduling scheme for wireless cellular multimedia networks, which addresses some of the disadvantages of previously proposed protocols, such as the joint CDMA/NC-PRMA scheme. Specifically, our scheme is based on an improved power grouping algorithm to reduce the unnecessary interference in the presence of imperfect power control. Other attributes of our scheme include the partition of the different traffic types into separate slots, as to provide independent control of each traffic type and a new scheduling algorithm for data traffic, as to provide differentiated service and maximize link utilization. We have evaluated our scheme through simulation and we report on the results in this paper. In particular, our results show the improvement in the performance of the system, such as the probability of packet loss, as compared with the joint CDMA/NC-PRMA scheme.

Vector quantization (VQ) is widely used in many high-quality and high-rate data compression applications such as speech coding, audio coding, image coding and video coding. When the size of a VQ codebook is large, the computational complexity for the full codeword search method is a significant problem for many applications. A number of complexity reduction algorithms have been proposed and investigated using such properties of the codebook as the triangle inequality. This paper proposes a new fast VQ search algorithm that is based on a multi-stage structure for searching for the best codeword. Even using only two stages, a significant complexity reduction can be obtained without any loss of quality. © 2000 IEEE.

In this paper, we introduce a simple adaptive procedure for computing the suboptimal weight vector of an array system operating at the cell-site. The total computational load for computing the primary eigenvector of the generalized eigen-problem is only 0(8.5N) including the matrices updates. The performance of the array system provided by the proposed beam former is shown in 3 typical cases of multipath fading wide-band CDMA channel. © 1999 IEEE.
