Tightly-Coupled Integrated LR-WPAN/WiMAX Network: Architecture and Performance Modelling

In this paper a general architecture of tightly-coupled integrated LR-WPAN/WiMAX network has been introduced by proposing and utilising a novel access router named Wireless Integrated Access Router (WIAR). The suggested access router effectively combines both WiMAX and LR-WPAN technologies in a same device. The main motivation to propose this integration is to deploy Internet of Things (IoT) applications and services in wide area networks. Using WiMAX as backhaul service, the Internet connection can be provided for dispersed mobile LR-WPAN users over a wide area. Moreover, it enables to access all collected data in the local LR-WPAN coverage area – which is named as Senspot in this paper – by third-party clients through the Internet. Furthermore, an analytic model has been developed for the integrated network to evaluate the system's performance. Theoretical results on blocking probability of new and handover calls from WiMAX subscribers, as well as new connections from LR-WPAN Senspots in a cell of WiMAX have been investigated in terms of call/connection rates and number of allocated channels.

Study of online modeling of earth pressure in chamber of shield tunneling machine based on LS-SVM

During tunneling process, the earth pressure in chamber must be maintained balance to the earth pressure on excavation face, or else it will cause the ground settlement. Due to the change of geology and working conditions, the earth pressure in chamber is usually changed. To achieve earth pressure dynamic balance control in chamber, an online modeling method of earth pressure in chamber is proposed based on LS-SVM. A sliding time window method is introduced to update the sample set as the tunneling process, and the data in the time window are employed to establish the dynamic model of the earth pressure which makes the model refresh online. To avoid the inversion of large matrix, the recursive algorithm of the model parameters is given according to the property of kernel function matrix and calculation formulas of block matrix, which makes the online algorithm of LS-SVM practical. At last, the simulation experiments are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method proposed, and it is more suitable for the earth pressure dynamic balance control compared with standard LS-SVM. © 2013 ICIC International.

This paper proposes a novel Compressed Sensing Ensemble Classifier (CSEC) for human detection. The proposed CSEC employs the compressed sensing technique to get a more sparse model with a more reasonable selection of base classifiers. The major contributions of this paper are: 1) a novel principled framework for ensemble classifier design based on compressed sensing;2) a new concept of considering both the simplicity of ensemble classifier and irrelevance of base classifiers towards optimal classifier design;and 3) a quadratic function for CSEC optimization which includes a new optimizable positive semi-definite relevance matrix to simultaneously select appropriate base classifiers with minimized relevance. Experimental results on INRIA and SDL databases show that the performance of CSEC is better than two most popular classifiers SVM and AdaBoost, as well as a most recent method CLML. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The conventional flocking formulation with velocity consensus does not apply to a group of agents moving in a bounded space as agents with a constant velocity unavoidably move out of any bounded space. In this paper, we give a generalized formulation for a rigid flock which accommodates the collective behaviors in a bounded space. Moreover, we propose an algorithm for addressing the issues caused by bouncing boundaries of a bounded space. The algorithm is verified in both numerical simulation and real experiments.

In this paper, we provided an algorithm to reconstruct images with Least Squares Support Vector Machines(LS-SVM) and Simulated Annealing Particle Swarm Optimization(APSO), named SAP. This algorithm introduces simulated annealing ideas into PSO, adopts cooling process functions to replace the inertia weight function and construct the time variant inertia weight function featured in annealing mechanism;takes use of the APSO algorithm to search for the optimized resolution of Electrical Capacitance Tomography(ECT) reconstruction image. In order to overcome the soft field characteristics of ECT sensitivity field, we exercised some image samples of typical flow pattern with LSSVM so as to predict the capacitance error caused by the soft field characteristics and then construct the fitness function of the particle swarm optimization on basis of the capacitance error. The simulation results show that SAP algorithm is featured in quick convergence rate and higher imaging precision. Compared with Landweber algorithm, the quality of reconstruction image with SAP is significantly improved.

The bag-of-words (BoW) model has been known as an effective method for large-scale image search and indexing. Recent work shows that the performance of the model can be further improved by using the embedding method. While different variants of the BoW model and embedding method have been developed, less effort has been made to discover their underlying working mechanism. In this paper, we systematically investigate the image search performance variation with respect to a few factors of the BoW model, and study how to employ the embedding method to further improve the image search performance. Subsequently, we summarize several observations based on the experiments on descriptor matching. To validate these observations in a real image search, we propose an effective and efficient image search scheme, in which the BoW model and embedding method are jointly optimized in terms of effectiveness and efficiency by following these observations. Our comprehensive experiments demonstrate that it is beneficial to employ these observations to develop an image search algorithm, and the proposed image search scheme outperforms state-of-the-art methods in both effectiveness and efficiency. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper, an effective speech coder that is based on a sparse representation of speech by exploiting the strong dependencies between adjacent pitch cycles is proposed. In the proposed coder, a pitch-synchronous processing that consists of pitch warping and a two-stage transformation is used to achieve a compact representation of the voiced speech. Power spectral density preserving quantization (PSD-PQ) is adopted for quantizing the transform coefficients. The result is a coder that is efficient over a wide range of bit rates: it approaches perfect reconstruction with increasing rate, and has a parametric signal representation at low rates. Both objective PESQ results and subjective A/B listening tests show that the proposed coder outperforms the ITU-T G.722.1 codec.

In this paper a study of the application of methods based on Computational Intelligence (CI) procedures to a forecasting problem in railway maintenance is presented. Railway maintenance is an important and long-standing problem that is critical for safe, comfortable and economic transportation. With the advent of high-speed lines, the problem has even more importance nowadays. We have developed a study, applying forecasting procedures from Statistics and CI, to examine the feasibility of predicting one-month-ahead faults on two high-speed lines in Spain. The data are faults recorded by a measurement train which traverses the lines monthly. The results indicate that CI methods are competitive in this forecasting task against the Statistical regression methods, with Ε-support vector regression outperforming the other employed methods. So, application of CI methods is feasible in this forecasting task and it is useful in the planning process of track maintenance. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.
