The bag of visual words model (BoW) and its variants have demonstrate their effectiveness for visual applications and have been widely used by researchers. The BoW model first extracts local features and generates the corresponding codebook, the elements of a codebook are viewed as visual words. The local features within each image are then encoded to get the final histogram representation. However, the codebook is dataset dependent and has to be generated for each image dataset. This costs a lot of computational time and weakens the generalization power of the BoW model. To solve these problems, in this paper, we propose to undo the dataset bias by codebook linear transformation. To represent every points within the local feature space using Euclidean distance, the number of bases should be no less than the space dimensions. Hence, each codebook can be viewed as a linear transformation of these bases. In this way, we can transform the pre-learned codebooks for a new dataset. However, not all of the visual words are equally important for the new dataset, it would be more effective if we can make some selection using sparsity constraints and choose the most discriminative visual words for transformation. We propose an alternative optimization algorithm to jointly search for the optimal linear transformation matrixes and the encoding parameters. Mining comprehensive protector (hereinafter referred to as "MCP") can monitor and protect the mining environment control system, whose working status directly affects the working surface of the environment, workers' health, equipment service life and production safety. Therefore it's needed to have a regular test in use. For common failures of the MCP testing system, the reliability model of the testing system is established to analyze the failure mode, effect and criticality of each basic unit. The main factors that affect the reliability of the system have been found out and some suggestions to enhance the reliability of the system have been put forward. © Research India Publications.

This paper addresses the problem of reducing the number of transmissions and control updates in a distributed control network of interconnected linear systems. Each node in the network decides when to transmit its state through the network and when to update the control law. Both decisions are event-driven and based on local information. It is shown that the stability of the system is preserved and the state of the system converges to a small region around the origin, whose size depends on the parameters of the transmission and control update trigger functions. A strictly positive lower bound for the inter-event times is derived. The results are illustrated through simulations showing the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Compound grey number and its grey degree are of importance for research on grey number and it algorithm rules. This paper proposes definitions of compound grey number and corresponding grey degree based on the "field" and axiomatic definition of grey degree, formulizes the grey degree of compound grey number by giving full consideration to the variations of "field" when compound grey number is generated from simple grey numbers, thus enrich the original definition of grey degree. Furthermore, this paper investigates the linear convergence of grey degree of compound grey number. Examples show the plausibility of these definitions and linear convergence, and the validity of Accumulated Generating Operation in terms of excluding outside disturbance.

During the practical production process, the soft sensors based on traditional single learning machine can not satisfied the needs of production. In this study, a multiple regression machine system (MRMS) is proposed to establish the soft sensor for overcoming the above shortage. The regression machines will be aggregated by ensemble algorithm to improve the performance of soft sensor, especially to enhance the accuracy of prediction. In the MRMS, a novel three-layer feedforward neural network Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) with random weights between the inputs and the hidden units is selected as the BaseLearn for its better accuracy of predictability and fast learning speed. An improved ensemble algorithm for regression problem is presented to combine the ELMs. The real production data from 300 t LF in Bao-steel Co. Ltd. are used to train and test the new soft sensor based on MRMS. The results of experiments demonstrated that the new MRMS method can improved generalization performance and boost the accuracy, and the accuracy of the soft sensor temperatures is satisfied for the needs of practical production. With growing developments in biomedical research and micro industrial applications, there is a demand for micro-grippers that are reliable and can operate with high precision. This paper presents a MEMS micro-gripper with an integrated electrothermal force sensors. The microgripper is actuated by electrostatic comb-drives. Electrothermal resistive sensors are used to measure the gripping force. In this arrangement, the sensing arms deflection induces a temperature difference between two identical resistive sensors, biased at the same voltage, which results in current variation in the resistors. The currents are then converted to an output voltage using a half Wheat-stone bridge and an instrumentation amplifier. With the sensing displacement information available, the gripping force can be calculated. The device was designed and fabricated in a commercial Silicon-On Insulator MEMS foundry (MEMSCAP). A pick-and-place operation on 85 μm micro-beads on 3-axis micro-positioner is performed to evaluate the performance of the device. The experiment shows that the micro-gripper is able to handle a wide range of micro-sample sizes with biocompatibility and gentle handling forces.

This paper presents the performances of a corner detector and a region detector in vision-based Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). In vision-based SLAM, a feature detection process for data-association is the first step. Therefore, the repeatability of a feature detector is important. Feature detectors are generally categorized as the region detector and the corner detector. There are conflicting research results for the repeatability of corner detectors and region detectors. This paper shows SLAM results using a corner detector and a region detector. Extended Kalman Filters (EKF) are used for implementing the two SLAM methods. The localization errors are evaluated quantitatively. From the experimental results, it is demonstrated that the corner detector is more efficient than the region detector for the work performed in this paper. © 2013 IEEE.

The neutron and gamma irradiation influence on wireless sensor nodes was studied. Communication reliability, microprocessor circulation speed, data store correctness of EEPROM, and the precise of sensor had been considered to be most important factors during irradiation influence test. Comparing with RSSI and BER, Packet loss rate had been proved to be more efficient communication reliability parameter. The microprocessor circulation speed test use floating-point circulation time arithmetic(FLOPS), data store correctness of memory test use the way that check equation numbers of the write and then read data in same cell. Finally, the data refresh method under LABVIEW was presented.

Applying multiple redundant and diverse communication channels is an established method to achieve an improved overall communication channel. When applied for packet-based data transmission over channels with strongly nondeterministic behaviour due to environmental influence, such as Wireless Communications, timing performance can be greatly improved by this approach. The central element in such a system is the so called "Combiner" on the receiving side. In this work, a new specific type named "Timing Combiner" is described. The Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP) according to IEC 62439-3 realizes such a Timing Combiner on the Ethernet level. In this work, an OPNET simulation model is created and analysed for its performance characteristics. Also a quantitative analysis of the effect of different interference models in an industrial environment is presented. © 2013 IEEE.

In traditional tissue P systems, each rule has a precise same execution time. That way of using the rules is not quite realistic from a biological point of view, because external conditions always change in an unpredicted manner. In this study, we investigate the use of time in tissue P systems. The timed tissue P systems is constructed by adding a time mapping to the rules to specify the execution time for each rule. Furthermore, a uniform and time-free solution to 3-coloring problem is proposed, where the execution time of the computational processes involved can vary arbitrarily and the output produced is always the same.
