Focusing on feature importance, this study utilized the XGBoostClassifier to predict NBA player salaries within categorized salary bands. Oversampling techniques ensured balanced class representation, while feature importance analysis identified Minutes Played, Age, Points Scored, Games Started, and Turnovers as key factors influencing model predictions. The XGBoostClassifier achieved a balanced accuracy of 83% across all salary tiers, demonstrating its ability to navigate NBA player valuation complexities. Focusing on these key features further boosted average accuracy to 85%, highlighting the potential for optimization through prioritizing impactful attributes. Our findings suggest valuable avenues for future research, including leveraging feature importance for model refinement, expanding the dataset size, incorporating more relevant features, and investigating outliers for deeper insights into the multifaceted dynamics of NBA player salary classification. © 2024 IEEE.

Health insurance is a useful service that can help its users gain lifesaving medical aid when they are in need. However, health insurance is also exploitable to insurance fraud through the falsification of information to increase the amount of reimbursement and cause massive loss of funds to the insurance provider. We propose the usage of machine learning to accurately determine potential health insurance fraud. The objective of conducting this research is to determine which features are the most important to determine healthcare insurance fraud. This research used a dataset provided in Kaggle titled Healthcare Provider Fraud Detection Analysis using Random Forest Classifier and Logistic Regression. The best-performing model in this test, the Logistic Regression, is then used to which features are the most important for the classification. Our research shows that the most important feature in detecting health insurance fraud is the amount of money reimbursed associated with a provider. The Logistic Regression model achieved an accuracy of 0.90, precision of 0.93, recall of 0.91, and an F1 Score of 0.90, outperforming the Random Forest model in comparative analysis. © 2024 IEEE.

A hybrid memory architecture supporting fine-grained data migration

Hybrid memory systems composed of dynamic random access memory(DRAM)and Non-volatile memory(NVM)often exploit page migration technologies to fully take the advantages of different memory *** previous proposals usually migrate data at a granularity of 4 KB pages,and thus waste memory bandwidth and DRAM *** this paper,we propose Mocha,a non-hierarchical architecture that organizes DRAM and NVM in a flat address space physically,but manages them in a cache/memory *** the commercial NVM device-Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory Modules(DCPMM)actually access the physical media at a granularity of 256 bytes(an Optane block),we manage the DRAM cache at the 256-byte size to adapt to this feature of *** design not only enables fine-grained data migration and management for the DRAM cache,but also avoids write amplification for Intel Optane *** also create an Indirect Address Cache(IAC)in Hybrid Memory Controller(HMC)and propose a reverse address mapping table in the DRAM to speed up address translation and cache ***,we exploit a utility-based caching mechanism to filter cold blocks in the NVM,and further improve the efficiency of the DRAM *** implement Mocha in an architectural *** results show that Mocha can improve application performance by 8.2%on average(up to 24.6%),reduce 6.9%energy consumption and 25.9%data migration traffic on average,compared with a typical hybrid memory architecture-HSCC.

Multiobjective Dynamic Flexible Job Shop Scheduling With Biased Objectives via Multitask Genetic Programming

Dynamic flexible job shop scheduling is an important combinatorial optimization problem that has rich real-world applications such as product processing in manufacturing. Genetic programming has been successfully used to learn scheduling heuristics for dynamic flexible job shop scheduling. Intuitively, users prefer small and effective scheduling heuristics that can not only generate promising schedules but also are computationally efficient and easy to be understood. However, a scheduling heuristic with better effectiveness tends to have a larger size, and the effectiveness of rules and rule size are potentially conflicting objectives. With the traditional dominance relation-based multiobjective algorithms, there is a search bias toward rule size, since rule size is much easier to optimized than effectiveness, and larger rules are easily abandoned, resulting in the loss of effectiveness. To address this issue, this article develops a novel multiobjective genetic programming algorithm that takes size and effectiveness of scheduling heuristics for optimization via multitask learning mechanism. Specifically, we construct two tasks for the multiobjective optimization with biased objectives using different search mechanisms for each task. The focus of the proposed algorithm is to improve the effectiveness of learned small rules by knowledge sharing between constructed tasks which is implemented with the crossover operator. The results show that our proposed algorithm performs significantly better, i.e., with smaller and more effective scheduling heuristics, than the state-of-the-art algorithms in the examined scenarios. By analyzing the population diversity, we find that the proposed algorithm has a good balance between exploration and exploitation during the evolutionary process. © 2024 IEEE.

FERMixNet: An Occlusion Robust Facial Expression Recognition Model with Facial Mixing Augmentation and Mid-Level Representation Learning

Facial expressions can provide a better understanding of people's mental status and attitudes towards specific things. However, facial occlusion in real world is an unfavorable phenomenon that greatly affects the performance of facial expression recognition models. Recent works addressing the occlusion problem have primarily relied on attention mechanisms or occlusion discarding methods that focus on non-occluded regions of the face. However, these methods have not achieved a good balance between occlusion robustness and model efficiency. In this paper, we propose a simple and efficient model, called FERMixNet, for occluded facial expression recognition. The model incorporates a novel facial mixing augmentation strategy (FERMix) that generates new training samples by simulating real-world facial occlusion and preserving high expression-related semantic information. By co-training the original and newly generated samples, the model's occlusion robustness is improved without increasing its complexity during inference. Additionally, to further enhance the model's occlusion robustness, we include mid-level representation learning in the network to learn the discriminative non-occluded local features of the samples with low computational cost. Extensive experiments on four public facial occlusion datasets: Occlusion-RAF-DB, Occlusion-FERPlus and FED-RO show that the proposed model achieves state-of-the-art results which demonstrates the good robustness of our method for occluded facial expression recognition. Meanwhile, the proposed model also achieves state-of-the-art results on the in-the-wild facial expression datasets RAF-DB, AffectNet-8, and AffectNet-7. It proves that the proposed model has good application prospects in real world. © 2010-2012 IEEE.

Immersive video interaction system: a survey

As communication technologies undergo rapid evolution, human interaction technologies have become increasingly efficient and accessible. Videoconferencing, for example, facilitates real-time, face-to-face communication worldwide, providing unprecedented convenience. Nevertheless, traditional two-dimensional (2D) videoconferencing systems frequently fall short of delivering a fully immersive experience, as they lack the ability to convey physical presence, depth perception, and natural interaction—key elements that are of particular significance in replicating the subtleties inherent in in-person communication. This disconnection leaves users yearning for the rich, multi-sensory experiences that real-life interactions can offer. In response, significant research efforts have been dedicated to the development of immersive video interaction systems (IVISs). This paper introduces the concept of IVISs and reviews a spectrum of systems advanced by researchers and industry innovators, each of whom contributes unique insights into the evolution of this field. A comparative analysis of the characteristics of current IVISs is provided, offering insights across multiple dimensions. This survey concludes with a discussion of potential future research directions and the challenges that remain in enhancing the IVIS technology. Through a comprehensive analysis, this work aims to foster further exploration and innovation in immersive communication technologies. © The Author(s) 2025.

As a Turing test in multimedia,visual question answering(VQA)aims to answer the textual question with a given ***,the“dynamic”property of neural networks has been explored as one of the most promising ways of improving the adaptability,interpretability,and capacity of the neural network ***,despite the prevalence of dynamic convolutional neural networks,it is relatively less touched and very nontrivial to exploit dynamics in the transformers of the VQA tasks through all the stages in an end-to-end ***,due to the large computation cost of transformers,researchers are inclined to only apply transformers on the extracted high-level visual features for downstream vision and language *** this end,we introduce a question-guided dynamic layer to the transformer as it can effectively increase the model capacity and require fewer transformer layers for the VQA *** particular,we name the dynamics in the Transformer as Conditional Multi-Head Self-Attention block(cMHSA).Furthermore,our questionguided cMHSA is compatible with conditional ResNeXt block(cResNeXt).Thus a novel model mixture of conditional gating blocks(McG)is proposed for VQA,which keeps the best of the Transformer,convolutional neural network(CNN),and dynamic *** pure conditional gating CNN model and the conditional gating Transformer model can be viewed as special examples of *** quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate McG on the CLEVR and VQA-Abstract *** experiments show that McG has achieved the state-of-the-art performance on these benchmark datasets.

This study investigates the challenges and opportunities of managing educational funds and controlling operational costs in two educational systems. It examines how factors such as school infrastructure, technology integration, teacher professional development, and parental involvement influence educational funding and quality. This study also explores the importance of equitable and efficient fund allocation, especially for remote schools that face resource constraints and development gaps. To analyze the financial trends of educational fund management, this study applies three machine learning models: decision trees, random forests, and support vector machines. The results show that the random forest model has the highest overall accuracy (90%) and the decision tree model has perfect accuracy in classifying institutions based on local income. This study identifies the most relevant features and demonstrates the effectiveness of the models in categorizing institutions and evaluating the fund management performance in the education sector. © 2024 IEEE.

Although language model scores are often treated as probabilities, their reliability as probability estimators has mainly been studied through calibration, overlooking other aspects. In particular, it is unclear whether language models produce the same value for different ways of assigning joint probabilities to word spans. Our work introduces a novel framework, ConTestS (Consistency Testing over Spans), involving statistical tests to assess score consistency across interchangeable completion and conditioning orders. We conduct experiments on post-release real and synthetic data to eliminate training effects. Our findings reveal that both Masked Language Models (MLMs) and autoregressive models exhibit inconsistent predictions, with autoregressive models showing larger discrepancies. Larger MLMs tend to produce more consistent predictions, while autoregressive models show the opposite trend. Moreover, for both model types, prediction entropies offer insights into the true word span likelihood and therefore can aid in selecting optimal decoding strategies. The inconsistencies revealed by our analysis, as well their connection to prediction entropies and differences between model types, can serve as useful guides for future research on addressing these limitations. © 2024 Association for Computational Linguistics.
