Domain generalization with semi-supervised learning for people-centric activity recognition

People-centric activity recognition is one of the most critical technologies in a wide range of real-world applications,including intelligent transportation systems, healthcare services, and brain-computer interfaces. Large-scale data collection and annotation make the application of machine learning algorithms prohibitively expensive when adapting to new tasks. One way of circumventing this limitation is to train the model in a semi-supervised learning manner that utilizes a percentage of unlabeled data to reduce the labeling burden in prediction tasks. Despite their appeal, these models often assume that labeled and unlabeled data come from similar distributions, which leads to the domain shift problem caused by the presence of distribution gaps. To address these limitations, we propose herein a novel method for people-centric activity recognition,called domain generalization with semi-supervised learning(DGSSL), that effectively enhances the representation learning and domain alignment capabilities of a model. We first design a new autoregressive discriminator for adversarial training between unlabeled and labeled source domains, extracting domain-specific features to reduce the distribution gaps. Second, we introduce two reconstruction tasks to capture the task-specific features to avoid losing information related to representation learning while maintaining task-specific consistency. Finally, benefiting from the collaborative optimization of these two tasks, the model can accurately predict both the domain and category labels of the source domains for the classification task. We conduct extensive experiments on three real-world sensing datasets. The experimental results show that DGSSL surpasses the three state-of-the-art methods with better performance and generalization.

The evolution of edge computing has advanced the accessibility of E-health recommendation services, encompassing areas such as medical consultations, prescription guidance, and diagnostic assessments. Traditional methodologies predominantly utilize centralized recommendations, relying on servers to store client data and dispatch advice to ***, these conventional approaches raise significant concerns regarding data privacy and often result in computational inefficiencies. E-health recommendation services, distinct from other recommendation domains, demand not only precise and swift analyses but also a stringent adherence to privacy safeguards, given the users' reluctance to disclose their identities or health information. In response to these challenges, we explore a new paradigm called on-device recommendation tailored to E-health diagnostics, where diagnostic support(such as biomedical image diagnostics), is computed at the client *** leverage the advances of federated learning to deploy deep learning models capable of delivering expert-level diagnostic suggestions on clients. However, existing federated learning frameworks often deploy a singular model across all edge devices, overlooking their heterogeneous computational capabilities. In this work, we propose an adaptive federated learning framework utilizing BlockNets, a modular design rooted in the layers of deep neural networks, for diagnostic recommendation across heterogeneous devices. Our framework offers the flexibility for users to adjust local model configurations according to their device's computational power. To further handle the capacity skewness of edge devices, we develop a data-free knowledge distillation mechanism to ensure synchronized parameters of local models with the global model, enhancing the overall accuracy. With the unprecedented prevalence of industrial Internet of Things(IIoT)and 5G technology,various applications supported by industrial communication systems have generated exponentially increased processing tasks,which makes task assignment inefficient due to insufficient *** this paper,an Intelligent and Trustworthy task assignment method based on Trust and Social relations(ITTS)is proposed for scenarios with many tasks and few ***,ITTS first makes initial assignments based on trust and social influences,thereby transforming the complex large-scale industrial task assignment of the platform into the small-scale task assignment for each ***,an intelligent Q-decision mechanism based on workers'social relation is proposed,which adopts the first-exploration-then-utilization principle to allocate *** when a worker cannot cope with the assigned tasks,it initiates dynamic worker recruitment,thus effectively solving the worker shortage problem as well as the cold start *** importantly,we consider trust and security issues,and evaluate the trust and social circles of workers by accumulating task feedback,to provide the platform a reference for worker recruitment,thereby creating a high-quality worker ***,extensive simulations demonstrate ITTS outperforms two benchmark methods by increasing task completion rates by 56.49%-61.53%and profit by 42.34%-47.19%.

Time series forecasting has remained a focal point due to its vital applications in sectors such as energy management and transportation planning. Spectral-temporal graph neural network is a promising abstraction underlying most time series forecasting models that are based on graph neural networks (GNNs). However, more is needed to know about the underpinnings of this branch of methods. In this paper, we establish a theoretical framework that unravels the expressive power of spectral-temporal GNNs. Our results show that linear spectral-temporal GNNs are universal under mild assumptions, and their expressive power is bounded by our extended first-order Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm on discrete-time dynamic graphs. To make our findings useful in practice on valid instantiations, we discuss related constraints in detail and outline a theoretical blueprint for designing spatial and temporal modules in spectral domains. Building on these insights and to demonstrate how powerful spectral-temporal GNNs are based on our framework, we propose a simple instantiation named Temporal Graph Gegenbauer Convolution (TGGC), which significantly outperforms most existing models with only linear components and shows better model efficiency. The swift progress of metasurface technology, enabling meticulous manipulation of the propagation environment, is anticipated to bring a transformative impact on sixth-generation (6G) wireless communications efficiency. Utilizing metasurface elements presents a promising opportunity for achieving passive scattering at sub-wavelength scales, facilitating intelligent radio settings’ advancement. Active Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (ARIS) have gained significant interest in emergent metasurface technology. In contrast to passive RIS, which exhibits a certain degree of performance enhancement but encounters restrictions arising from the "double fading" phenomenon in the phase response, ARIS emerges as a highly promising alternative to counter such restrictions. This study provides a complete examination of ARIS, particularly emphasizing current improvements and its various uses within the context of 6G wireless networks. The review commences by laying a robust foundation in RIS technology, covering the various types and modes of RIS. Following this, we will explore the benefits and practical implementations of ARIS. Through a systematic examination, we categorize different approaches within ARIS-enabled use cases. These scenarios include optimizing the sum rate and signal-to-noise ratio, attaining maximum secrecy rate, energy minimization, and ensuring channel estimation. Additionally, we provide a summary and lessons learned along with a summary table for each category to describe, contrast, and evaluate the existing literature regarding setup, channel characteristics, methodologies, and objectives. We highlight the crucial role of ARIS in defining the landscape of wireless communications in the 6G era by outlining the open research problems in this emerging area and exploring the attractive future prospects. © 1998-2012 IEEE.

Corrosion poses a significant challenge in industries due to material degradation and high maintenance costs, making effective inhibitors essential. Recent studies suggest expired pharmaceuticals as alternative corrosion inhibitors, but identifying the most efficient compounds can be time-consuming. This study applies machine learning models, particularly Gradient Boosting Regressor (GBR), to predict corrosion inhibition efficiency (CIE). The developed model is integrated into a web-based application, enabling real-time, accurate CIE predictions. Results show GBR as the more precise model for predicting CIE, with low error rates. The streamlit-based web application offers a user-friendly platform, facilitating quick identification of suitable inhibitors. It is flexible, supporting analysis beyond corrosion inhibitors, and significantly enhances the efficiency of the evaluation process. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Many sophisticated cloud platforms are available to provide services such as storage and computation for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. However, with the concerns about the semi-trusted nature of cloud platforms, data security and privacy have been gaining broad attention. In this paper, we propose a blockchain-assisted verifiable data sharing scheme (BAV-DSS) for IoT. The BAV-DSS features fine-grained access control, fast encryption, and outsourced decryption with verifiability. Specifically, with the application of ciphertext-policy attribute-based encryption (CP-ABE), flexible access control is enabled. Blockchain is employed to store public keys, generate account addresses, and perform data verification. Furthermore, the selective replayable chosen ciphertext attacks (sRCCA) security of BAV-DSS is proved, and the simulation results indicate that BAV-DSS obtains high efficiency and practicality compared to other schemes. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Clustered Federated Learning (CFL), as a type of Federated Learning (FL) paradigm, divides the clients into multiple clusters through the clustering process and trains them within the clusters, thus improving the overall model training accuracy. But the clustering process is also the weak link, which can lead to the failure of the whole model training if it is interfered or destroyed by the attacker. In this paper, we study the attack methods and defense strategies for attackers to implement data poisoning by tampering with client data, resulting in overall clustering failure. Our defense approach is designed to identify anomalous clients and recover their poisoned data. In order to resist the malicious behavior of attackers, we propose a dual-threshold pixel difference and watermark authentication defense method for detecting the presence of anomalous clients. The method can accurately identify the abnormal fluctuations in the data and effectively screen out the abnormal clients. Meanwhile, we propose a self-embedding watermarking defense algorithm based on shuffling idea for recovering poisoned data. Among them, our self-embedding watermarking algorithm not only accurately locates and recovers the tampered region of the image, but also improves the watermark security to prevent attackers from cracking it easily. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm can accurately identify the abnormal client and recover the data. Even if the client’s data is massively tampered with, we can recover the tampered data images with high quality and ensure that the CFL clustering is not corrupted. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Clustered Federated Learning (CFL) is an innovative architecture that effectively tackles the challenge of data heterogeneity in Federated Learning (FL). However, such a setup also introduces vulnerabilities that can be exploited by attackers to execute more severe attacks. This paper compares the efficacy of data reconstruction attacks utilizing Generative Adversarial Nets (GANs) in FL and CFL, respectively. It also proposes a general client-level data reconstruction attack scheme whose key is in that the attackers can eavesdrop the victim’s partial uploaded parameters. Experimental results demonstrate that the sample data generated in this kind of attack within the scenario of CFL exhibit a higher degree of similarity with the targeted data compared to FL. And it is observed that the attacks involving eavesdropping in CFL perform more effectively with a client-level attack accuracy. In addition, we design a lightweight and adaptive local differential privacy (LDP) mechanism to defend against this kind of attack. In this method, under the premise that the differential privacy budget decreases as the number of training round adds, each client dynamically adjusts the probability of adding differential privacy noise and the size of DP’s parameters according to the training accuracy and the resemblance to the reconstructed data generated by attackers. Our defense method can effectively alleviate the loss of training accuracy for each client caused by the accumulation of the differential privacy budget while ensuring the defense effect, and it also reduces clients’ computational burden. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
