Video object segmentation aims to extract 2D object masks by segmenting video frames into multiple objects, which is crucial in various practical applications such as medical imaging, etc.. However, traditional video object segmentation methods produce 2D masks, which are not suitable for 3D scenarios where depth information is essential, such as in robotic grasping, virtual reality, and autonomous driving, etc.. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of 3D human mesh reconstruction (HMR) as an extension beyond 2D video object segmentation. We begin by reviewing the mainstream video object segmentation methods, then transition from 2D video object segmentation to 3D HMR. We further categorize recent HMR methods based on key characteristics that define this research field, including the type of model input and the use of statistical models. Deep reinforcement learning-based resource allocation method for multi-satellite scheduling

Agile Earth observation satellites (AEOSs) scheduling represents a complex domain within combinatorial optimization, crucial for the regular operations and mission success of in-orbit satellites. In order to timelessly tackle the allocation of complex resources and corresponding time windows, a satellite resource adaptive allocation method, named SRADA-DRL, is proposed in this paper. By combining deep reinforcement learning (DRL) with rule-based heuristics, the SRADA-DRL is designed to optimize the allocation of satellite resources in dynamic environments. Concerning maximizing the total rewards of allocated missions, a mathematical model and a corresponding Markov decision model are constructed within the scheduling process. After analyzing the spatial–temporal distribution features of all resources and missions, the time-dependent missions are first decomposed into meta-missions corresponding to satellite resources, and a meta-mission is then selected to generate an allocation sequence in each stage. On this basis, the execution times for all missions are assigned in the single-satellite scheduling process. In which, the DRL updates the gradient information contingent upon the rewards garnered from the allocation sequence. In addition, the classical scheduling scenarios of varying scales are also conducted. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed SRADA-DRL method in addressing the AEOSs scheduling. © 2025

Semantic Communication (SC) has emerged as a novel communication paradigm in recent years. Nevertheless, extant Image Semantic Communication (ISC) systems face several challenges in dynamic environments, including low information density, catastrophic forgetting, and uncertain Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). To address these challenges, we propose a novel Vision-Language Model-based Cross-modal Semantic Communication (VLM-CSC) system. The VLM-CSC comprises three novel components: (1) Cross-modal Knowledge Base (CKB) is used to extract high-density textual semantics from the semantically sparse image at the transmitter and reconstruct the original image based on textual semantics at the receiver. The transmission of high-density semantics contributes to alleviating bandwidth pressure. (2) Memory-assisted Encoder and Decoder (MED) employ a hybrid long/short-term memory mechanism, enabling the semantic encoder and decoder to overcome catastrophic forgetting in dynamic environments when there is a drift in the distribution of semantic features. (3) Noise Attention Module (NAM) employs attention mechanisms to adaptively adjust the semantic coding and the channel coding based on SNR, ensuring the robustness of the CSC system. The experimental simulations validate the effectiveness, adaptability, and robustness of the CSC system. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) are rigorous clinical studies crucial for reliable decision-making, but their credibility can be compromised by bias. The Cochrane Risk of Bias tool (RoB 2) assesses this risk, yet manual assessments are time-consuming and labor-intensive. Previous approaches have employed Large Language Models (LLMs) to automate this process. However, they typically focus on manually crafted prompts and a restricted set of simple questions, limiting their accuracy and generalizability. Inspired by the human bias assessment process, we propose RoBGuard, a novel framework for enhancing LLMs to assess the risk of bias in RCTs. Specifically, RoBGuard integrates medical knowledge-enhanced question reformulation, multimodal document parsing, and multi-expert collaboration to ensure both completeness and accuracy. Additionally, to address the lack of suitable datasets, we introduce two new datasets: RoB-Item and RoB-Domain. Experimental results demonstrate RoBGuard's effectiveness on the RoB-Item dataset, outperforming existing methods. © 2025 Association for Computational Linguistics.

On the Performance of Active RIS-Assisted Mixed RF-THz Relaying Systems

We investigate the performance of an active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted mixed radio frequency (RF)-terahertz (THz) relaying system, where the RF signal reaches the relay through the active RIS and is then transmitted to the user via the THz channel. Under this scenario, we analyze the system performance with the relay employing amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) protocols. More specifically, we derive the exact expressions for the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for both relaying protocols. Based on this, we obtain the exact expressions for the outage probability, average bit error rate (ABER), and average channel capacity (ACC). Furthermore, to gain deeper insights, we derive the asymptotic expressions at high SNRs and obtain diversity order (DO) of the system. Moreover, we extend the analysis to the variable gain relaying scheme. The findings reveal that the DOs for both relaying protocols are determined by the THz channel parameters, and the DO under the AF relaying protocol is twice that of the DF relaying protocol. Finally, we validate that active RIS (A-RIS) can more effectively assist the performance of the mixed RF-THz relaying system compared to passive RIS. © 2014 IEEE.

Time series forecasting is always important, with multivariate long-term series forecasting being its most challenging task. Here, the existing methods typically learn only in a single domain and focus on optimizing model structures, leading to incomplete information mining and imprecise predictions. To address this, we propose a generalized Mixture of Multi-Domain Experts (MoME) for multivariate long-term series forecasting. Unlike most existing methods, MoME focuses on multi-perspective information mining and fusing. To this end, MoME transforms time series into the frequency and spatial domains to learn their respective representations. MoME regards variates information as embedded features and applies fast Fourier transform to the time dimension. Then it learns embedded features in the frequency domain. In spatial domain learning, MoME applies self-attention mechanism on the variates dimension to efficiently capture dependencies among multiple variates. Finally, MoME fuses the outputs from all domains, reinterprets and integrates information across multiple domains, and predicts future time series. Curvilinear Structure segmentation has numerous applications in various fields, including providing a better understanding of defects such as cracks on roads or walls, thereby assessing the structural safety of buildings. Numerous curve segmentation methods based on Convolutional Neural Networks(CNN) have been developed in recent years. However, preserving feature integrity remains a challenge. To address this issue, this paper introduces a double dynamic network, called DD-Net, which consists of a dynamic structure for training and dynamic masking for inference. Firstly, to enhance the nonlinearity of the model, a paradigm to auto-adjust the CNN structure via a trainable module is formed for better fine-grained feature extraction. This dynamic structure (DS) paradigm enables a trade-off to extract or discard the feature data in the model training. Due to the data heterogeneity between the training and inference data, models may contain some useless nodes that are less effective during inference. The dynamic masking (DM) is proposed to omit the useless nodes based on the score difference between the train and inference feature statistics, thereby reducing redundant computations. To further improve the model’s performance on thin-curve segmentation and to preserve feature integrity, we introduce a non-curve suppression (NCS) module. This module focuses on background information while considering foreground prediction to address noisy conditions. The experimental results show that our DD-Net achieves promising results on three benchmark datasets and outperforms state-of-the-art curve segmentation models. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

UMIT: Unifying Medical Imaging Tasks via Vision-Language Models

With the rapid advancement of deep learning, particularly in the field of medical image analysis, an increasing number of Vision-Language Models (VLMs) are being widely applied to solve complex health and biomedical challenges. However, existing research has primarily focused on specific tasks or single modalities, which limits their applicability and generalization across diverse medical scenarios. To address this challenge, we propose UMIT, a unified multi-modal, multi-task VLM designed specifically for medical imaging tasks. UMIT is able to solve various tasks, including visual question answering, disease detection, and medical report generation. In addition, it is applicable to multiple imaging modalities (e.g., X-ray, CT and PET), covering a wide range of applications from basic diagnostics to complex lesion analysis. Moreover, UMIT supports both English and Chinese, expanding its applicability globally and ensuring accessibility to healthcare services in different linguistic contexts. To enhance the model’s adaptability and task-handling capability, we design a unique two-stage training strategy and fine-tune UMIT with designed instruction templates. Through extensive empirical evaluation, UMIT outperforms previous methods in five tasks across multiple datasets. The performance of UMIT indicates that it can significantly enhance diagnostic accuracy and workflow efficiency, thus providing effective solutions for medical imaging applications. With the widespread deployment of vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs), data sharing has garnered considerable attention as a core feature of VANETs. Attribute-based proxy re-encryption (ABPRE) enables fine-grained access control and provides flexible ciphertext updates. The initially authorized vehicle generates the re-encryption key to enable ciphertext-to-ciphertext conversion in the cloud, allowing ciphertext to be shared with new recipients. However, initially authorized vehicles may not always be trustworthy and could share data with malicious receivers. In addition, the computation and communication overhead of ABPRE hinders its widespread application in VANETs. To address these issues, we propose a lightweight sanitizable scheme for edge-assisted VANETs based on ABPRE. In this scheme, the re-encryption key is verified by a sanitizer, to prevent the data from being shared with malicious data receivers. In addition, key-splitting techniques and edge computing are employed to reduce the communication and computation overhead of re-encryption. A comprehensive security analysis and performance evaluation demonstrate that the proposed scheme is efficient and practical. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Kick drum plays an important role in electronic music. When hearing an excellent kick drum sound from a reference music track, music production beginners always feel confused about how it will sound if we solo the kick track and why it sounds perfect in a specific song. Reproducing the kick of a music track is not easy even for professional producers and arrangers. To investigate the ability of artificial intelligence in separating kick-drum sounds, in this paper we propose an end-to-end system which is capable of separating multi-genre high-quality electronic kick drum clips from mixed song tracks. Unlike most of the previous music source separation tasks, we only focus on the electronic kick drum rather than the whole percussion track. First, we design a multiband data representation approach for non-pitched percussions such as kick drums, then adopt a multi-discriminator module trained on a multi-genre kick drum corpus to further optimize the separated kick sound. To the authors’ knowledge, this study marks the first attempt at kick drum separation with stylistic optimization. Objective and subjective evaluations demonstrate that joint multiband representation and genre-guided optimisation can form a high-performance framework, showing a promising solution to the kick drum separation task. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
