The recent digital revolution has facilitated communication, data portability and on-the-fly manipulation. Unfortunately, this has brought along some critical security vulnerabilities that put digital documents at risk. The problem is in the security mechanism adopted to secure these documents by means of encrypted passwords;however, this security shield does not actually protect the documents which are stored intact. We propose a solution to this real world problem through a 1D hash algorithm coupled with 2D irFFT (irreversible Fast Fourier Transform) to encrypt digital documents in the 2D spatial domain. This method is described elsewhere in [1]. Further by applying an imperceptible information hiding technique we can add another security layer which is resistant to noise and to a certain extent JPEG compression. We support this assertion by showing a practical example which is drawn from our set of experiments. Our proposal not only points out forgery but also lets a jury or a forensics expert have access to the original document despite being manipulated. This would undoubtedly be very useful in cases of disputes or claims. © 2008 IEEE.

Our preliminary research focuses on the development of an Ambient Mobile Browsing Experience (AMBE) system. AMBE is a communication and synchronisation framework that will provide integrated connectivity across heterogeneous geographically distributed devices. The intention is to provide persistent location-independent and appliance-sensitive viewing for the user, thus enabling Internet mobility. Human technology interface communication will be abstracted to a representation that facilitates optimisation and customisation across a number of different displays. This will help to ensure seamless continuity between components providing usability and maximum user convenience. An emphasis of our work is the application of a human-centered design ethos. Motion estimation (or optical flow estimation) is an interesting problem in computer vision. However this task is computationally intensive for conventional processors. In this work an investigation into an FPGA-based hardware architecture for real-time motion estimation is carried out. The algorithm used in this paper is a gradient based inverse finite element method for optical flow computation. It carries out the motion estimation by calculating the gradient, Laplacian, and subsequently the velocities of each pixel in a parallel design which aids in the speed of the computation. The algorithm has been benchmarked against many of the well known algorithms cited within the field. A literature review is carried out and the algorithm is discussed. An FPGA design is presented. Preliminary simulation results are shown and discussed.

Type-2 (T2) fuzzy logic (FL) systems (T2FLSs) have shown a remarkable potential in dealing with uncertain data resulting from real-world systems with non-stationary characteristics. This paper reports on novel developments in interval T2FLS (IT2FLS) classifier design methodology so that system non-stationarities can be effectively handled. In general, the approach presented here rests on a general concept of two-stage FLS design in which an initial rule base structure is first initialized and then system parameters are globally optimized. The proposed incremental enhancements of existing fuzzy techniques, adopted from the area of conventional type-1 (T1) FL, are heuristic in nature. The IT2FLS design methods have been empirically verified in this work in the realm of pattern recognition. In particular, the potential and the suitability of IT2FLS to the problem of classification of motor imagery (MI) related patterns in electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings has been investigated. The outcome of this study bears direct relevance to the development of EEG-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) since the problem under examination poses a major difficulty for the state-of-the-art BCI methods. The IT2FLS classifier is evaluated in this work on multi-session EEG data sets in the framework of an off-line BCI. Its performance is quantified in terms of the classification accuracy (CA) rates and has been found to be favorable to that of analogous systems employing a conventional T1FLS, along with linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and support vector machine (SVM), commonly utilized in MI-based BCI systems.

Sound localisation is defined as the ability to identify the position of a sound source. The brain employs two cues to achieve this functionality for the horizontal plane, interaural time difference (ITD) by means of neurons in the medial superior olive (MSO) and interaural intensity difference (IID) by neurons of the lateral superior olive (LSO), both located in the superior olivary complex of the auditory pathway. This paper presents spiking neuron architectures of the MSO and LSO. An implementation of the Jeffress model using spiking neurons is presented as a representation of the MSO, while a spiking neuron architecture showing how neurons of the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body interact with LSO neurons to determine the azimuthal angle is discussed. Experimental results to support this work are presented.

This paper is concerned with the inverse kinematic control of a 6 DOF robot manipulator using visual feedback. Two different frameworks have been proposed to learn the inverse kinematics of the manipulator. In the first framework, the robot work-space has been discretized using a priori fixed number of fuzzy regions. Within each fuzzy region, the inverse kinematic relationship from image plane as observed by two fixed cameras to joint space of the manipulator is expressed as a linear map using first order approximation. This proposed framework allows the inverse kinematics to be represented by a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model whose parameters are learned on-line using gradient descent algorithm. In the second framework, the robot workspace in image plane is discretized into a number of clusters whose centers are determined using Fuzzy C Mean (FCM) clustering algorithm. The FCM algorithm allows each data vector to belong to every cluster with a fuzzy truth value between 0 and 1. The inverse kinematics problem is solved without using any knowledge about orientation of the manipulator. This leads to redundant solutions in the joint angle space for a given target position. This redundancy in the joint angle space is achieved using the concept of sub clustering in the joint space. Inclusion of sub-clustering also improves the position tracking accuracy. The proposed algorithms have been successfully implemented on a 6 DOF PowerCube manipulator from Amtec robotics with a reasonable position tracking accuracy.

Use of incomplete image data has become a prominent research issue in recent years, driven by the development of space variant image sensors. Whilst image reconstruction techniques have been developed that enable the subsequent use of standard image processing algorithms, the development of image processing algorithms that can be applied directly to incomplete image data has received less attention. The problem of interest point detection for incomplete images is addressed by presenting an algorithm that can be applied directly to incomplete image data without the requirement of image reconstruction, and the accurate performance of the algorithm is illustrated through visual results and ROC curves.

We present a programmable dynamic charge transfer synapse (CTS) in a single semiconductor device. The CTS comprises a metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) transistor operating in subthreshold and two MOS capacitors in proximity to the transistor. One of the capacitors is permanently biased in strong inversion where the associated density of charge in the well implements the weighting. When a presynaptic spike is applied to the gate of the second MOS capacitor the charge density in the well falls producing a current spike at the output. The amplitude of the spike is correlated with the equilibrium charge density in the well, which is controlled by the associated gate voltage. Aggregation of spikes from an array of CTSs is achieved by using a current mirror configuration whose output postsynaptic potential can be used to stimulate a point neuron circuit. The function of the MOS transistor is to restore the charge in the well where the duration of this process is dictated by the associated gate voltage. Therefore, the synapse is capability of operating in the facilitating state over a large frequency range. The CTS is compact and since it operates in transient mode, its power consumption is negligible. Simulation results are presented which clearly demonstrate its operation.

A feedback linearization based direct adaptive neural control scheme is proposed for a class of affine nonlinear discrete time systems. Two radial basis function networks are used to approximate the unknown system dynamics. The weight update laws for the networks are derived to make the closed loop error dynamics Lyapunov stable. The proposed control scheme removes the need for any projection algorithm or additional control action presented in the literature. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the theoretical formulations.
