Efforts to develop standards for learning technologies have developed along two distinct strands: standards for data and information models; and standards for components, interfaces and architectures. Standards relating to architectural frameworks are less well developed, and responsibility for decisions concerning system architecture has been left largely in the hands of developers of proprietary software such as learning management systems. There is growing interest in the development of standards for open architectural frameworks, based on layering, a decomposition technique which is in widespread use in software development. As interoperability and reusability are key concerns for developers of e-learning systems, the choice of an appropriate layering strategy is crucial, and this paper illustrates how a reuse-based layering strategy (as opposed to a more typical responsibility-based strategy) might be applied to e-learning systems in order to enhance reuse and interoperability.

Various English verb classifications have been analyzed in terms of their syntactic and semantic properties, and conceptual components, such as syntactic valency, lexical semantics, syntactic diatheses, and semantic/syntactic correlations. Here the visual semantics of verbs, particularly their visual roles, somatotopic effectors, and level-of-detail, is studied. We introduce the notion of visual valency and use it as a primary criterion to recategorize eventive verbs for language visualisation (animation) in our intelligent multimodal storytelling system, CONFUCIUS. The visual valency approach is a framework for modelling deeper semantics of verbs. In our ontological system we consider both language and visual modalities since CONFUCIUS is a multimodal system.

This paper proposes a new multiagent planning approach to coordination synthesis that views distributed agents as discrete-event processes. The connection between discrete-event control synthesis and coordination planning is first established, thereby enabling the exploitation of the vast body of knowledge and associated software synthesis tools from 'The Supervisory Control of Discrete-Event systems' for automatic coordination synthesis of distributed agents. Importantly, these coordinating agents designed collectively generate a behaviour guaranteed not to contradict any specified inter-agent constraint, is nonblocking and optimal. A simple planning methodology is proposed in terms of procedures supported by CTCT, an existing, freely available design tool developed based on the control synthesis framework. A simple example illustrates the use of the CTCT-based methodology to synthesize coordination modules for distributed agents. Discussions in relation to previous work examine the relative significance of the new multiagent planning framework.

This Paper presents a novel scheme for extracting the key moving objects in picture in picture news video. In this kind of video, some moving objects undergo the static camera while the others do not. Actually it is very difficult for computer to distinguish whether the motion is caused by the moving objects themselves or the moving camera by the frame difference only. So in the paper, the fast, automatic and robust anchorperson extraction is achieved by the simple anchorperson model. The experimental results demonstrate good performances.

This applied research paper presents a novel hybrid system, which provides a systematic approach for an efficient and realistic case retrieval, retention and testing of product formulations. The underlying idea is to build a case library of practical and viable product formulations with consistent quality patterns, flexible process attributes and constituent proportions. To avoid the storage of non-representative and unrealistic cases within the case library, a strict multivariate validation method has been imposed on the system. The input formulation, whether it be a single suggestion on product formulation as a query, an optimized case or a collection of tests, is validated against the most similar formulation cluster in the case library determined through the Principal Component Similarity factor and Mahalanobis distance. T2 and Q-statistics as multivariate data validation methods are employed to determine whether the input formulations match the most similar cluster of datasets in the case library. The synergistic use of univariate control charts and the graphical plot of variable relations between the input formulation and the most similar case provide information on variables, which cause a mismatch. If the value of the culprit variable cannot be rectified to match the dataset in the case library, the new input formulation can only be retained after an empirical validation in the main manufacturing area. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

Statisticians use the term interaction for situations wherein the effect of one variable depends upon another variable [McNeil, Francis, McNeil, 1975]. A deep knowledge about interdependencies and interactions among elements within a domain is conducive to devising action plans towards a desired situation. It allows for product or systems optimization, preventing pitfalls and diagnosing malfunctions. As part of a project to develop a knowledge based system for supporting research activities in the field of polymeric adhesives, we compared different methods of assessing interactions. Here, we employed general liner models as a classical approach, characteristic angles, self-organizing maps (SOM) and interactive visual feature extraction methods (IVFEM) as alternative techniques. The latter is based on a data projection method, where attributes are mapped to areas that can then be selected interactively. In this manner, we can describe interaction in terms of shared attribute regions in proportion to combined area. As a quantization method, we initialize SOMs with characteristic angles to illustrate partial interactions. Characteristic angles based on multivariate analysis of the angles between eigenvectors can be utilized to describe partial interactions associated with an explained variability. © 2003 Univesity of Virginia.

Awareness about interconnectivities and interactions among parameters is vital for the identification of the optimal manufacturing routes and economic factors within a manufacturing system. Within this context, multidimensional data projection methods, Principal Component Mapping (PCM) and Sammon's Mapping, have been scrutinized for visualizing multivariate interaction patterns. As a new approach, these techniques were employed in such a way that interactive multi-layer maps could be created. Each layer within the generated map matches to a specific attribute and characteristic of the dataset. Individual layers within the map can be interactively selected and superimposed to show multiple and partial interactions.

During recent decades we have witnessed not only the introduction of automation into the work environment but we have also seen a dramatic change in how automation has influenced the conditions of work. While some 30 years ago the addition of a computer was considered only for routine and boring tasks in support of humans, the balance has dramatically shifted to the computer being able to perform almost any task the human is willing to delegate. The very fast pace of change in processor and information technology has been the main driving force behind this development. Advances in automation and especially Artificial Intelligence (AI) have enabled the formation of a rather unique team with human and electronic members. The team is still supervised by the human with the machine as a subordinate associate or assistant, sharing responsibility, authority and autonomy over many tasks. The requirement for teaming human and machine in a highly dynamic and unpredictable task environment has led to impressive achievements in many supporting technologies. These include methods for system analysis, design and engineering and in particular for information processing, for cognitive and complex knowledge [1] engineering .

Case Based Reasoning System (CBR) is an efficient and straightforward approach for recommending desirable product formulations. In response to a changeable market situation, it is vital to adapt or generate enhanced and more efficient product formulations and manufacturing routes. Due to the lack of variability and indefinite data distribution in many case libraries, however, this technique can be very limited and is inadequate for creating improved formulations. The proposed approach represents an intelligent way to overcome this shortcoming. Following a carefully premeditated Design of Experiment (DOE), a synergistic use of data noise removal, modeling and optimization techniques were utilized to develop favorable product formulations. After a multivariate validation, these along with DOE based formulations are retained in the CBR library for later use.
