Awareness about interconnectivities and interactions among parameters is vital for the identification of the optimal manufacturing routes and economic factors within a manufacturing system. Within this context, multidimensional data projection methods, Principal Component Mapping (PCM) and Sammon's Mapping, have been scrutinized for visualizing multivariate interaction patterns. As a new approach, these techniques were employed in such a way that interactive multi-layer maps could be created. Each layer within the generated map matches to a specific attribute and characteristic of the dataset. Individual layers within the map can be interactively selected and superimposed to show multiple and partial interactions.

Statisticians use the term interaction for situations wherein the effect of one variable depends upon another variable [McNeil, Francis, McNeil, 1975]. A deep knowledge about interdependencies and interactions among elements within a domain is conducive to devising action plans towards a desired situation. It allows for product or systems optimization, preventing pitfalls and diagnosing malfunctions. As part of a project to develop a knowledge based system for supporting research activities in the field of polymeric adhesives, we compared different methods of assessing interactions. Here, we employed general liner models as a classical approach, characteristic angles, self-organizing maps (SOM) and interactive visual feature extraction methods (IVFEM) as alternative techniques. The latter is based on a data projection method, where attributes are mapped to areas that can then be selected interactively. In this manner, we can describe interaction in terms of shared attribute regions in proportion to combined area. As a quantization method, we initialize SOMs with characteristic angles to illustrate partial interactions. Characteristic angles based on multivariate analysis of the angles between eigenvectors can be utilized to describe partial interactions associated with an explained variability.

During recent decades we have witnessed not only the introduction of automation into the work environment but we have also seen a dramatic change in how automation has influenced the conditions of work. While some 30 years ago the addition of a computer was considered only for routine and boring tasks in support of humans, the balance has dramatically shifted to the computer being able to perform almost any task the human is willing to delegate. The very fast pace of change in processor and information technology has been the main driving force behind this development. Advances in automation and especially Artificial Intelligence (AI) have enabled the formation of a rather unique team with human and electronic members. The team is still supervised by the human with the machine as a subordinate associate or assistant, sharing responsibility, authority and autonomy over many tasks. The requirement for teaming human and machine in a highly dynamic and unpredictable task environment has led to impressive achievements in many supporting technologies. These include methods for system analysis, design and engineering and in particular for information processing, for cognitive and complex knowledge [1] engineering .

Case Based Reasoning System (CBR) is an efficient and straightforward approach for recommending desirable product formulations. In response to a changeable market situation, it is vital to adapt or generate enhanced and more efficient product formulations and manufacturing routes. Due to the lack of variability and indefinite data distribution in many case libraries, however, this technique can be very limited and is inadequate for creating improved formulations. The proposed approach represents an intelligent way to overcome this shortcoming. Following a carefully premeditated Design of Experiment (DOE), a synergistic use of data noise removal, modeling and optimization techniques were utilized to develop favorable product formulations. After a multivariate validation, these along with DOE based formulations are retained in the CBR library for later use.

Compared to traditional transforms such as the FFT and the DCT, the wavelet transform is seen rather as the framework of a transform. From this framework, different wavelets can be derived depending on the type of the basis, the number of coefficients and different other parameters. The aim of this paper to introduce methodology and an environment for a rapid design of wavelet filters for both 1-D and 2-D applications.

In this paper, a cooperative sweeping strategy with deadlock avoidance of complete coverage path planning for multiple cleaning robots in a changing and unstructured environment is proposed, using biologically inspired neural networks. Cleaning tasks require a special kind of trajectory being able to cover every unoccupied area in specified cleaning environments, which is an essential issue for cleaning robots and many other robotic applications. Multiple robots can improve the work capacity, share the cleaning tasks, and reduce the time to complete sweeping tasks. In the proposed model, the dynamics of each neuron in the topologically organized neural network is characterized by a shunting neural equation. Each cleaning robot treats the other robots as moving obstacles. The robot path is autonomously generated from the dynamic activity landscape of the neural network, the previous robot location and the other robot locations. The proposed model algorithm is computationally efficient. The feasibility is validated by simulation studies on three cases of two cooperating cleaning robots. The multiple cleaning robots sweeping will not be trapped in deadlock situations.

Research attempting to merge human and mechanical systems through a nervous system is one of the most dynamic fields in interface technology. Recently, artificial cochlear and retinal nerves were connected via a nervous system. However, there has been no report concerning the replacement of human tactile sensation by artificial sensors connected to the tactile sensory nerve system. The present study reports the development of a system which enables the touch strength applied to a robot hand to be sensed and applied to the hand of a human operator via the microstimulation method. The operator controls the grasping action of a robot hand equipped with tactile sensors at a remote location via a network. The contact information between an object and the robot hand is transmitted via the network, and the tactile sensory nerve of the operator is stimulated by a microelectrode. The force applied to the robot hand can be sensed as an applied force to the hand of the human operator. Applications of the proposed system include the presentation of tactile perception in remote manipulation. In addition, the proposed system is an effective method for transmitting sensation from artificial limbs. The present paper describes the experimental system and results.

The use of laboratory experiments is a critically important aspect of engineering education. Experience in teaching has shown that a complementary approach combining theoretical and practical exercises is vital for effective learning. Increasingly, teaching institutions are offering remote access to distant laboratories as part of an overall e-learning strategy. Remote experimentation provided as part of a Web-based learning approach affords a number of critical benefits, allowing flexible access to on-campus resources free of time or geographical constraints. In the context of distance learning it can be the only realistic method of performing experiments. However adapting and redeveloping existing software and hardware resources to this purpose is both time consuming and expensive. An innovative simple approach to this problem is presented in this paper. The remote desktop method offered here allows students to have full access to existing on-campus laboratory resources remotely but without substantial implementation and development overheads incurred by the providers. This is achieved through increased functionality and extended utilisation of existing assets.

Combining Character-Based Bigrams with Word-Based Bigrams in Contextual Postprocessing for Chinese Script Recognition

It is crucial to use contextual information to improve the recognition accuracy of Chinese script in an offline, handwritten Chinese character-recognition system. However, with the increase in the number of candidates given by a character recognizer, contextual postprocessing using a word-based bigram is time-consuming. This article presents a novel contextual postprocessing method that integrates character-based bigram postprocessing with word-based bigram postprocessing in light of the complementary action between Chinese characters and Chinese words. On the basis of isolated character recognition, character-based bigram postprocessing using a forward-backward search is first executed on a big candidate set, which improves both the accuracy and efficiency of the candidate set (the cumulative accuracy of the top ten candidates is greatly boosted). Then, to further improve accuracy, word-based bigram postprocessing (WBP) is executed on a small candidate set. This method obtains high accuracy while paying attention to postprocessing speed at the same time. Experimental results for three Chinese scripts (about 66,000 characters in total) demonstrate the effectiveness of our method: character-based bigram postprocessing improves accuracy from 81.58% to 94.50%, and the cumulative accuracy of the top ten candidates rises from 94.33% to 98.25%. After WBP, 95.75% accuracy is achieved, which is equivalent to the accuracy of WBP executed on a big candidate set. However, our method is more than 100 times faster than that of WBP. © 2002, ACM.
