Assessing the needs for adaptation and mitigation strategies to climate change and variability in Niger River Basin is a key for future development in Western Africa. There are two major challenges in terms of the assessment: the first is that future projections in water availability based on the historical trends are hard to assess under uncertainty, and the second is that human activities and population growth play a decisive but very uncertain role in environmental impacts. In order to address both challenges, we have developed a geovisual analytics tool for exploring simulation results under combinations of climate models, climate policies, and future population growth. Moreover, our tool is capable of ensemble-visualization and allows users to explore agreement levels among different climate models to assess future uncertainty. © The Eurographics Association 2015.

We describe our organizations, our expected attendees, our approach and schedule of topics for the conducting the SIG, and our recruitment plan. The primary goal of this meeting is to provide a forum for discussing needs of CHI participants with disabilities, and to discuss unmet needs that act as barriers for conference attendance. © 2016 Authors.

The essence of bidirectional programming

Bidirectional transformations(BXs), programs with a forward transformation and a backward transformation that maintain consistency between input and output, are routinely written in ways that do not let programmers specify their behavior completely. Several bidirectional programming languages exist to aid programmers in writing BXs with increased maintainability but decreased expressiveness. Such languages allow programmers to write BXs as one program for both directions, which is easier to maintain than separate programs for each direction. However, the maintainability provided by existing bidirectional languages comes at the cost of expressiveness because the ambiguity of synchronization is solved by default strategies which are hidden from programmers. The programmers’ inability to influence synchronization strategies has led to the proposal of a vast number of approaches that consider tailor-made synchronization strategies for particular *** this paper, we argue that such ambiguity is essential for BX and advocate that the synchronization strategy should not be hidden from programmers but considered from the start. We propose a novel approach to specifying so-called well-behaved bidirectional programs by their backward transformations, capable of expressing all aspects of a BX while retaining maintainability. Soundness of our approach results from a systematic analysis, based on existing mathematical concepts, of the instrumental laws of well-behaved BXs. We show that well-behaved BXs are uniquely determined by their backward transformations and corresponding forward transformations can be obtained for free.

Chronic care manages long-term, progressive conditions, while acute care addresses short-term conditions. Chronic conditions increasingly strain health systems, which are often unprepared for these demands. This study examines the burden of conditions requiring acute versus chronic care, including sequelae. Conditions and sequelae from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 were classified into acute or chronic care categories. Data were analysed by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, presenting total numbers and contributions to burden metrics such as Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and Years of Life Lost (YLL). Approximately 68% of DALYs were attributed to chronic care, while 27% were due to acute care. Chronic care needs increased with age, representing 86% of YLDs and 71% of YLLs, and accounting for 93% of YLDs from sequelae. These findings highlight that chronic care needs far exceed acute care needs globally, necessitating health systems to adapt accordingly. © 2025. The Author(s).

Traffic congestion is a widespread problem. Dynamic traffic routing systems and congestion pricing are getting importance in recent research. Lane prediction and vehicle density estimation is an important component of such systems. We introduce a novel problem of vehicle self positioning which involves predicting the number of lanes on the road and vehicle's position in those lanes using videos captured by a dashboard camera. We propose an integrated closed-loop approach where we use the presence of vehicles to aid the task of self-positioning and vice versa. To incorporate multiple factors and high-level semantic knowledge into the solution, we formulate this problem as a Bayesian framework. In the framework, the number of lanes, the vehicle's position in those lanes and the presence of other vehicles are considered as parameters. We also propose a bounding box selection scheme to reduce the number of false detections and increase the computational efficiency. We show that the number of box proposals decreases by a factor of 6 using the selection approach. It also results in large reduction in the number of false detections. The entire approach is tested on real-world videos and is found to give acceptable results.

This paper presents the design of an mHealth application for prevention and early intervention of childhood anxiety. The application is based on REACH, a preventative-early intervention protocol for childhood anxiety. This paper describes the multidisciplinary design process, sharing lessons learned in developing an effective mHealth application. This mHealth application is unique due to participant age, preventive-early intervention focus, and utilization of mobile technology in a situated manner. A design process inspired by user-centered leveraging key informant interviews was used to identify application features, including game based strategies and an animated motivational avatar. Validation was performed through external review and a usability study performed with target end users of the application. Results suggest overall satisfaction, ease of use, and increased motivation. © 2015 ACM.

One of the original goals of intelligent educational systems was to guide each student to the most appropriate educational content. In previous studies, we explored both knowledge-based and social guidance approaches and learned that each has a weak side. In the present work, we have explored the idea of combining social guidance with more traditional knowledge-based guidance systems in hopes of supporting more optimal content navigation. We propose a greedy sequencing approach aimed at maximizing each student’s level of knowledge and implemented it in the context of an open social student modeling interface. We performed a classroom study to examine the impact of this combined guidance approach. The results of our classroom study show that a greedy guidance approach positively affected students’ navigation, increased the speed of learning for strong students, and improved the overall performance of students, both within the system and through end-of-course assessments. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

One of the important challenges in the Model Based Development (MBD) of automotive systems is the problem of verifying functional system properties. In its general form, the verification problem is undecidable due to the interplay between continuous and discrete system dynamics [1]. In this tutorial, we present the bounded-time temporal logic testing and verification problem for Cyber-Physical systems (CPS) [2]. Temporal logics [3] can formally capture both state-space and real-time system requirements. For example, temporal logics can mathematically state requirements like “whenever the system switches to first gear, then it should not switch to second gear within 2.5 sec”. Our approach in tackling this challenging problem is to convert the verification problem into an optimization problem through a notion of robustness for temporal logics [4]. The robust interpretation of a temporal logic specification over a system trajectory quantifies “how much” the system trajectory satisfies or does not satisfy the specification. In general, the resulting optimization problem is non-convex and non-linear, the utility function is not known in closed-form and the search space is uncountable. Thus, stochastic search techniques are employed in order to solve the resulting optimization problem. We have implemented our testing and verification framework into a MATLAB (TM) toolbox called S-TaLiRo (System's TemporAl LogIc Robustness) [5], [6]. In this tutorial, we will demonstrate how S-TaLiRo can provide answers to challenge problems from the automotive industry [7]-[10].

This paper addresses the problem of parallelizing existing single-rate Simulink models for embedded control applications on multi-core architectures considering communication cost between blocks on different CPU cores. Utilizing the block diagram of the Simulink model, we derive the dependency graph between the different blocks. In order to solve the scheduling problem, we describe a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulation for optimally mapping the Simulink blocks to different CPU cores. Since the number of variables and constraints for MILP solver grows exponentially when model size increases, solving this problem in a reasonable time becomes harder. For addressing this issue, we introduce a set of techniques for reducing the number of constraints in the MILP formulation. By using the proposed techniques, the MILP solver finds solutions that are closer to the optimal solution within a given time bound. We study the scalability and efficiency of our consisting approach with synthetic benchmarks of randomly generated directed acyclic graphs. We also use the Fault-Tolerant Fuel Control System demo from Simulink and a Diesel engine controller from Toyota as case studies for demonstrating applicability of our approach to real world problems.
