The goal of this project is to develop tools that support users' creation of their own behavior-change plans. We conducted two formative user studies to explore people's creation of plans for their own behavioral goals. Users were provided with minimal support to facilitate goal-setting, use of behavior-change techniques, and self-monitoring. In this paper, we present insights on how to further facilitate personalization of behavior-change plans.

Brain morphometry study plays a fundamental role in medical imaging analysis and diagnosis. This work proposes a novel framework for brain cortical surface classification using Wasserstein distance, based on uniformization theory and Riemannian optimal mass transport theory. By Poincare uniformization theorem, all shapes can be conformally deformed to one of the three canonical spaces: the unit sphere, the Euclidean plane or the hyperbolic plane. The uniformization map will distort the surface area elements. The area-distortion factor gives a probability measure on the canonical uniformization space. All the probability measures on a Riemannian manifold form the Wasserstein space. Given any 2 probability measures, there is a unique optimal mass transport map between them, the transportation cost defines the Wasserstein distance between them. Wasserstein distance gives a Riemannian metric for the Wasserstein space. It intrinsically measures the dissimilarities between shapes and thus has the potential for shape classification. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to introduce the optimal mass transport map to general Riemannian manifolds. The method is based on geodesic power Voronoi diagram. Comparing to the conventional methods, our approach solely depends on Riemannian metrics and is invariant under rigid motions and scalings, thus it intrinsically measures shape distance. Experimental results on classifying brain cortical surfaces with different intelligence quotients demonstrated the efficiency and efficacy of our method. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

The production network at Arizona State University uses a commercial load balancer for syslog messages from the firewalls at the data center perimeter. The logs are carried in UDP packets and the load balancer divides the load among servers based on the source IP address. This may cause a server to be overwhelmed due to the high incoming data rate, and create log files unequal in size. These logs are processed by splunk, an application for analyzing the massive streams of data generated by IT systems. In a testbed with an OpenFlow switch and three rsyslog servers, fed by a mirror of the firewall rsyslog traffic, we study controllers implementing round-robin, random, and load-based load balancing policies. All policies achieve delivery ratios comparable with the commercial load balancer. When servers fail or go down for maintenance, the load-based policy produces log files the most balanced in size. The results suggest that an OpenFlow load balancer has performance competitive with a commercial load balancer, and can equalize the log file size at servers which improves the efficiency of splunk.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive brain disease. Accurate diagnosis of AD and its prodromal stage, mild cognitive impairment, is crucial for clinical trial design. There is also growing interests in identifying brain imaging biomarkers that help evaluate AD risk presymptomatically. Here, we applied a recently developed multivariate tensor-based morphometry (mTBM) method to extract features from hip-pocampal surfaces, derived from anatomical brain MRI. For such surface-based features, the feature dimension is usually much larger than the number of subjects. We used dictionary learning and sparse coding to effectively reduce the feature dimensions. With the new features, an Adaboost classifier was employed for binary group classification. In tests on publicly available data from the Alzheimers Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, the new framework outperformed several standard imaging measures in classifying different stages of AD. The new approach combines the efficiency of sparse coding with the sensitivity of surface mTBM, and boosts classification performance.

One of the main barriers preventing widespread use of formal methods is the elicitation of formal specifications. Formal specifications facilitate the testing and verification process for safety critical robotic systems. However, handling the intricacies of formal languages is difficult and requires a high level of expertise in formal logics that many system developers do not have. In this work, we present a graphical tool designed for the development and visualization of formal specifications by people that do not have training in formal logic. The tool enables users to develop specifications using a graphical formalism which is then automatically translated to Metric Temporal Logic (MTL). In order to evaluate the effectiveness of our tool, we have also designed and conducted a usability study with cohorts from the academic student community and industry. Our results indicate that both groups were able to define formal requirements with high levels of accuracy. Finally, we present applications of our tool for defining specifications for operation of robotic surgery and autonomous quadcopter safe operation.

Software Product Line engineering has introduced feature modeling as a domain analysis technique used to represent the variability of software products and decision-making scenarios. We present a model-based transformation approach to solve conflicts among configurations performed by different stakeholders on feature models. We propose the usage of a domain-specific language named CoCo to specify attributes as non-functional properties of features, and to describe busineb-related decision rules in terms of costs, time, and human resources. These specifications along with the stakeholders' configurations and the feature model are transformed into a constraint programming problem, on which decision rules are executed to find a non-conflicting set of solution configurations that are aligned to busineb objectives. We evaluate CoCo's compositionality and model complexity simplification while using a set of motivating decision scenarios. © 2015 ACM.

Trees can differ enormously in their crown architectural traits, such as the scaling relationships between tree height, crown width and stem diameter. Yet despite the importance of crown architecture in shaping the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems, we lack a complete picture of what drives this incredible diversity in crown shapes. Using data from 374,888 globally distributed trees, we explore how climate, disturbance, competition, functional traits, and evolutionary history constrain the height and crown width scaling relationships of 1914 tree species. We find that variation in height–diameter scaling relationships is primarily controlled by water availability and light competition. Conversely, crown width is predominantly shaped by exposure to wind and fire, while also covarying with functional traits related to mechanical stability and photosynthesis. Additionally, we identify several plant lineages with highly distinctive stem and crown forms, such as the exceedingly slender dipterocarps of Southeast Asia, or the extremely wide crowns of legume trees in African savannas. Our study charts the global spectrum of tree crown architecture and pinpoints the processes that shape the 3D structure of woody ecosystems. © The Author(s) 2025.

This work explores the impact of teaching and learning if the rate of learner engagement outside the classroom is continuously measured and available to the instructor and students. We describe an ongoing implementation of a monitoring tool built within a software engineering continuous integration and testing (CI & Test) platform that integrates multiple streams of student activity and performance on yearlong junior software engineering projects. The CI & Test platform allows for continuous and instantaneous feedback, which we will use to inform student behavior change. In the work-in-progress we describe the technology, its impact on the teaching process for the instructor, and preliminary results observing impacts on student engagement behavior.
